How do I stop my Asrock mobo from whining?

Hi there everybody!

So I recently finished building my new Sandy Bridge rig. I have an Asrock Extreme4 Gen 3, with a XFX 5850, a 2500k, and an Antec Truepower New 650w. Everything is working perfectly except for one thing.

It emits a low frequency hum/whine during use. It doesn't increase during certain activities and it doesn't decrease. It stays at a constant level of whine that's so annoying, it's burrowing a hole in my ear. This has been going on for around 2 weeks ever since I got it. ARGH!

Is there anyway to stop this noise? I read somewhere that was an option you could toggle in the BIOS that could help, but I'm not sure how much truth there is to that. Any advice will do, this is really driving me MENTAL!

Thanks for reading!

try these steps, unhook all components from motherboard, unscrew motherboard from case, place motherboard in bathtub, hook old power supply to motherboard, jump black wire to green wire on 24pin connector, fill bathtub with water, plug power supply into power outlet, problem solved.

Burrowing a hole in your ear is reason enough, coil whine is just icing on the cake. RMA it to the merchant before your 30 days are up.

Thank you all for the responses so far.

Surely there must be another solution besides RMA'ing right? Any settings I can tweak in the bios?

You cannot tweak coil whine out unless you underclock/undervolt your CPU reducing the load on the power circuitry and even then it may not work. You got a mobo with a noisy mosfet so an RMA is your only option outside of getting a board with encased mosfets that has a good history of being silent.

i had several gigabyte x58 boards that whined and i tryed all kinds of things to fix it...nothing worked short of an rma....the board you have doed not seem to have a history of coil whine so if i were you id get an rma going...the later gigabyte x58 boards did not whine, not to say none did but i suspect they made some change on the board to eliminate it....it was a pretty common problem with x58 giga boards for a while....after i rma'ed the boards no more whine...if your under 30 days just exchange it at the retailer, if not see if they will do a cross ship....asrock did a cross ship for me bout 6 months ago...
