The folks at Bethesda have posted some menu settings that may help with the blurry textures, texture popping and screen tearing. They recommend trying these settings one at a time in case your performance is worse after the change.

  • Issues w/ screen tearing:
  • RAGE currently does not have a menu option to turn V-sync on or off.
  • If the graphics driver supports a so called "swap-tear" extension then RAGE will use it and RAGE will V-sync when running >= 60 FPS and RAGE will tear when < 60 FPS. Unfortunately at the release of RAGE, none of the graphics drivers have the "swap-tear" extension enabled.
  • The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.
  • If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.
  • If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.
  • Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:+r_swapInterval 1
  • The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up.

  • Blurry Textures and Texture Popping:
  • The texture streaming is limited by the performance and number of cores of the main processor (CPU).
  • The higher the resolution at which the game renders and the higher the anti-aliasing setting, the more texture data is needed to texture the environment. If you do not have a high end CPU you may momentarily see blurrier textures and texture popping when the view changes quickly.
  • If you have a processor with few cores and you have a high end NVIDIA graphics card then you can try turning on the "GPU Transcode" menu option in the video settings menu in RAGE. By enabling this option a large percentage of the texture calculations are moved to the graphics\ processor (GPU). However, this option is not available on all graphics hardware and may not appear in the menu if your hardware does not support the necessary features.
  • On processors with few cores without the ability to turn on "GPU Transcode" you can significantly improve the texture streaming performance by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam: +vt_maxPPF 16
  • The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up. If you have very few cores like a dual core processor then you can set a lower value like: +vt_maxPPF 8
  • If setting these values does not improve the texture streaming performance for you then consider lowering the anti-aliasing setting in the video settings menu in RAGE. You may, for instance, observe slow texture streaming at high resolutions like 2500 x 1600 with anti-aliasing set to 16X. In some cases lowering the anti-aliasing to 8X fixes the problem but lower settings may further improve the texture streaming. Alternatively, or in addition, you can lower the resolution.
We hope these help. The teams at id and Bethesda continue to work solutions to help you guys. More to come!

Hmm... a lot to ponder. I'll have to try a lot of these tonight & see how it all works out. I still think they need to release the super texture pack.

I'm actually curious about the AA settings. From a glance of the other threads it seemed like people were trying AA settings of 16x and 8x, which is quite high traditionally. If Rage is setup to decrease graphics for fps, even if you are getting high fps with these AA settings, is the engine not just decreasing other graphics to compensate?

That's a big question we need to look at

No matter how many knobs you turn, a shitty game remains a shitty game.

Stuff like this is why I switched to console gaming. I believe the PC is a far superior platform, but I'd rather play the games than try to fix them. I'd always spend more time tweaking the game to run on my machine the best, then when it was finally as good as it could be, I'd never actually play the game because I'd be continually analyzing the graphics for improvements. *sigh*

Switching to console might be easier if they allowed K/M, till then its not an option for me.

We wouldn't have to fix them if they would just give us OPTIONS! Instead they make the engine think for itself which is just a terrible idea.

I'm still curious if they have a fix coming for the stuttering I get now and then(feels like something suddenly decides to start loading). Slows to a crawl, chunka-chunka-chunka, and then it's smooth as butter again.

Weird little game. Silly ID.

That "swap-tear" feature sounds interesting. I hope graphics drivers will upgrade and allow other games to use it in the future.

Eggzactly, we should have the options on the PC to manipulate settings from the graphics menu, such as texture quality, as the PC is much more flexible than a console.

Kudos to Beth for responding so quickly. I am glad they didn't take longer to issue a statement to PC players.

Holy hell, do I also need to face west, wear a banana on my head, and repeat some crazy mantra as well?

This is the only reason I'm glad I'm still out of work and broke, so I didnt waste money on this game, esp if I have to jump through this many hoops just to play the damn thing.

"Issues w/ screen tearing:

So to turn off all the rage Bethseda needs to put in an off button. Get to it!

Sorry I must agree with others saying this is a shitty game. There is no way in Hell anyone at ID can say with a straight face this game was tested and NO ONE noticed the tearing issue... Pathetic.

Oil, actually.

Needless to say that Rage spectacularly failed the standards at PCGS, a lot of these fixes have already been linked to, I'll keep an eye on this thread and mirror anything I find that works.

The only reason I'm not swearing at my PC right now is that I missed the newegg deal on Rage and I refused to pay ~60 bucks for a game with no reviews. Looks like I really got lucky missing out on all of these problems. I'll buy it when it's ~30 bucks and they have all of these problems fixed.

you do know that the console versions also have this issue.

As long as the game is playable I don't really give a crap about the textures right now. Pretty sure they are going to be better than quake...But I still can't play it, because the rest of the world got screwed on release date :p (for a godamned digitally released product!)

They do in several games...:p

Well, they said that some drivers don't have the "rip-tear" extension implemented in them. I was wondering about how good OpenGL implementation is in current drivers considering not many games use OpenGL and there being a good chance that nvidia and ATi need to tweak their drivers for newer games that use it.

I might be giving Carmack more credit than he deserves but he's been writing OpenGL game engines for years so I'd think he knows what he's doing. Back when 3D accelerators were fairly new, OpenGL implementation as far as video drivers went was always kinda hit or miss so I wouldn't doubt if nvidia and ATi actually had to tweak their drivers for Rage.

Many people seem to think that id is mostly responsible but Rage could be using newer OpenGL extensions that haven't been thoroughly tested and used in recent software and were overlooked by nvidia/ATi in video drivers.

Bullshit. Id and Bethesda did this to spite us... rabble rabble... consoles... rabble rabble... predetermined hatred... rabble rabble... not perfect..... rabble rabble.. taking my ball and going home.

Unless this is a patch which replaces all the tired and stupid gameplay elements which people here have been warning us about, I don't see how us non-preorder people are going to change their mind on this.

glad amazon was able to cancel my preorder. I'll let it drop a ways, I've not finished BLOPS yet.

Make a file called rageconfig.cfg in ...\Rage\base, paste this inside. It will autoload.

I suggest these as launch options;
+com_AllowConsole 1 +com_SkipIntroVideo 1 +cvaradd g_fov 10 +mem_phymemblocksizem 1024 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 256 +jobs_numthreads 4 +vt_maxppf 128 +vt_maxlockedpages 64 +m_smooth 0 +r_swapInterval 1

Everything runs great with a 6970, no tearing or popup textures anymore, using the latest amd driver.

You may want to go make these 2 folders which it likes to use for a cache file, but fails to create on it's own;
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\id Software\Rage

I hope this helps a few of you :)

It seems everytime one of these developers decide to limit your ability to adjust your graphic settings it ends up screwing up things royally and yet they keep trying it. Look at all the issues with Crysis 2 caused simply because rather then allowing the end user to control the graphic settings, as they do on most other games, they decided to limit it to a choice of low, medium or high.

I was really interested in playin Rage now I think I'll wait 6 months or so until it hits a Steam sale for $10 or $15. I have no job I can't afford to put down $60 for any game right, now but I would have considered it for $40 or $50 now I will just wait for the bargin bin.

The geforce .com article states forcing 8K textures needs at least 1.5GB of VRAM. I'll give it a try with my 570, which has slightly less and see how it goes.

PS: WTF, damn forum keeps auto-removing g e f o r c e.

I'm going to pull out my old STB 4mb Virge 3D card and give it a shot. I will probably experience the same amount of joy as the rest of you with high end cards.

All this talk of creating .ini files and adding stuff reminds me of the 'good ole days' of PC gaming. You guys should be happy to participate in this awesome piece of PC gaming history in the modern era.

Just can't satisfy some people.........

This...im actually thinking of picking it up (not for 60) because it reminds me of the old days. When you had to work to achieve better performance than everyone else. the ability was there...you just had to get your hands dirty.

I remember having more fun tweaking settings than playing the actual game. some of you have just gone soft...this is [H]ard. They were pushing the boundaries, trying something new for a change. there's bound to be some hiccups.

Yeah, because a 2500K @ 4.4GHz isn't on the high end of current CPU performance.
