Rage Reviews!

Eh, what platform was this review done for?
I don't seem to see it in the review.
Not sure I buy all the hype in that review either.

Looks like the reviews are saying its quality and worth while but don't expect a new approach to the same formula. I'm grabbing it.

Damn 10-12 hour gameplay on the IGN review :(. I guess the only replacement for borderlands will be borderlands 2 :) .

I can't convince myself to spend $60 on a game with anything less than 20 hours of gameplay. I'll wait until it hits around $30

I could if it had a fully featured MP, but for a primarily SP game, I don't know what the hell they were thinking. I would expect 30 at least.

My same thinking. I don't have a lot of extra money, and if I'm going to pay $60 for a game, it's either going to have to be multiplayer (lasting hundreds of hours), Skyrim (hopefully lasting hundreds of hours), or some other game that lends itself to a lot of replayability.

This game has been in development for 4 years, looks like the console port it is, and only has 12 hours of gameplay.... Id and Carmack can suck it.

If it is a great 12 hour experience $60 isn't bad. A good co-op mode would have been a huge bonus too. However based on the Ars review I'll wait until it's like $20 or less.

Willits said at E3 the 12-hour estimate was if you stuck to the core missions and didn't do anything in the way of sidequests.

at one point, you're told that if you want something, you need to take ur atv drive way across the terrain to blow off some fireworks.

I was offered a really cool weapon. But I had to go get bread from the grocery store for his grandma who when I offered the bread to the woman, she offered me a bigger gun if I'd shoot her grandson. Fucking tools.

well, you spend $12+ for a ~2 hour movie, so this stacks up quite well.

I never spend any money on movies... Occasionally I buy DVD box of some series I like which ends up costing me less than a dollar per episode. 12 hours is fairly short for a game unless it is a low cost game (indie or such).

even the IGN review makes this game sound 'Meh'

I watched IGN's review. I'm surprised they didn't give it a higher score. It sounded pretty good to me. It's everything id promised. Only con I really see is the story is meh.

I spent what, 29 bucks on HardReset and I've played 11 hours in the supposedly 4 hour game.

I think the $60 will be fine if I eventually play around 20 hours and enjoy it.

Length does not equal quality.:D

No one should judge anything from a Joystiq review, they are terrible at reviewing games. I know Kyle isn't ID's biggest fan after Quakecon but I will admit I laughed a bit at the front page post. I was at the fabled Quakecon where AMD reigned supreme even though Intel was the sponsor. It was a funny sight to behold to be sure but ID did handle the situation pretty poorly. Time will tell how well Rage does, I will admit I am dissapointed to hear how short the game is considering how long it was in development. I hope a majority of that time was spent perfecting the engine and Rage is a sample of what we can expect to come when they use the engine.

and you guys were expecting something glorious?

ID commits to consoles and shurgs off the PC
just before release of the Console game Rage ported to the PC ID states it is commited to PCs and the tools bought it hook line and sinker......

lolpwnt

It sounds to me that Rage is just another game thats been given the DNF stigma of being panned for not delivering on what it never promised.

FIrst off, its an ID game, so why would people expect it to have a good story? ID games have never been known for their stories or long and memorable single player campaigns. Their single player modes have always been fairly straight forward, so it should not be a surprised that they decide to play it safe with Rage. Honestly, was there anything in any of the demos or presentations we've seen over the years that would indicate that it would be a better game that it turned out to be? There's been tons of game play footage of this game all year of the combat and gameplay, and i did not see anything that innovative aside from the graphics.

If there is any disappointment, it would be the lack of LAN play, but Carmack has told us early on that LAN will not be an option during release.

Why? Because he is critical of the game? It seems like a fair assessment to me. "RAGE is creatively and mechanically bankrupt, but it sure is pretty" is the perfect description for this game.

-edit read to the end of the review and realized you meant that ars recommended a "skip".

Imagine Borderlands with the fun stripped out, or Fallout without actual choice, characters, or consequences. None of the game's ideas are thought out or fully explored, so the game feels like a series of dead ends in a world that is hard to care about, in which you play a bland character doing boring things against stock enemies using weak guns. I only finished RAGE because I was paid to do so, and the process was a struggle; the game never presented me with a hook to continue playing,

The game starts with a fine engine, but it never justifies its own existence, and I only experienced brief flashes of fun in my time with the game. I'm going to play the game on the PC once that version of the game is unlocked and then write another post, but I felt like I had to get the warning out the second the embargo dropped. At the very least, you need to rent this before you buy it. Most shooter fans will be fine skipping it altogether. This a game that seems content with getting in its own way as much as possible; it works as a satirical look at why open world games often fail, but as a standalone game it's maddeningly bad.

The best games are created when a team is passionate about some aspect of the experience: be it the lead character, the setting, the story, or a new game mechanic. There is nothing about the characters, setting, story, or mechanics in Rage that's interesting, new, exciting, or fun. It feels like a group of people had to create a game because they were under contract, not because they honestly enjoyed any aspect of their own creation. This is a great tech demo for the engine, and that's all. It's merely competent, but never special.

So, just to sum up my nine plus hours with the game so far:
No story to speak of
No characters that make an impression
Linear
Broken save system
Dull mechanics
Tedious quests
Weak shooting
Stock weapons
Racing is fun
Minigames are enjoyable
Very pretty

We'll be testing on PC and playing multiplayer in the coming days, but I felt it was important to share what the game is versus what people expect it to be. This is a massive disappointment.

those reviewers can kiss my ass.... rage is by far best one to date from id & is diff from any of the past id games to date. its a new ip from them... would u rather havem 1/2 assed it like ea does to their games ?

just because it took 4 years to complete doesnt make it bad and compairing it ti dnf is stupidist thing i heard by far on here

this game is plays and feels like a true id game from them

I'll wait for a good profile from AMD and maybe a patch before I play. I took a chance by pre-ordering this for $60 and I hope I'm not let down.

I'm relieved to hear it. I so badly want to support id, their games are unique pieces of FPS art... I can live with Rage if it's just buggy right now, as long as there is a good game here underneath. I know people tend to overreact when a major title like this initially disappoints because of bugs/performance issues... I just hope that is the case here.

I love the he'll out of hard reset. Still fire it up and play a level or two if I am just messing around. I hope they fix the texture glitches, my copy comes tomorrow. At $42 it was not a bad price, maybe worth to see what the fuck they have been up to after all these years. But head defo looking forward to borderlands 2

Their single player always sucks is not an excuse for a developer. They MADE this game SP focused, yet it sucks. They chose not to include any substantial multiplayer. You cannot excuse them for this.

I agree, they sure are! I just discovered the Giantbomb site and I love the Quicklook vids. This is the best way to review a game I have ever seen on the net. Just the game being played with the player and a observer commenting as the game unfolds. They start playing at the beginning, going through the menu screens and everything. Totally unrehearsed, and the game speaks for itself, no hype, just the real deal. I watch the Rage, and Dark Souls Quicklooks. Both were excellent.

Give this weeks GiantBomb Podcast a listen for some interesting opinions on Rage.
