Alright, raise your hand if you are one of the people that has received a throttling warning from AT&T. C'mon, I know some of you have to be in the top 5%. :D

Following a trend set by other carriers, AT&T has begun sending SMS warning messages to the top 5 percent of data users on its network. The message alerts consumers that they are among AT&T’s top 5 percent that billing period, and suggests they use Wi-Fi to avoid reduced data speeds in the future.

I find this hilarious. ATT who's stakeholders I am sure are against the fair taxing of the rich are more than willing to throttle the data use of the top 5% on their plans be they unlimited.

Think about that. We think it is unfair if you use our bandwidth but not if we make more money by restricting you.

Sorry the analogy felt too good to not use. Political and doesn't belong here. Delete as you see fit.

Heh, that's a very good analogy. Actually, I was thinking that the "top 5%" is somewhat arbitrary and the standard should be set against absolute numbers instead. Imagine if you got taxed year to year based upon your relative income rather than a fixed and absolute tax bracket.

I already got my letter and sms. They threatened to downgrade my account. I had to call and play dumb.

It looks like AT&T is following the footsteps of T-Mobile, whom they're trying to acquire.

I hope VZW doesn't do the same for those who have the unlimited plan.

Problem is there will always be a top 5%. Next month they will threaten the top 5% and so on and so forth claiming they are only targeting their "worst" offenders. Which sounds good, but in reality that bar moves.

F' em...

An all-you-can-eat buffet that is overpriced and only allows you to have one plate per hour. Any takers?

The ISPs hand out more bandwidth than what they have, Now they are starting to run into problems because they're short on bandwidth. The customer have to pay for their greed.

well if it's a small minority that are hogging it all up then it's pretty understandable what they're doing...my problem is if that's the case then don't call it unlimited when it's not unlimited...i'd be more than happy to pay less money for a 5GB/month cap

I think we should call them on it.

So AT&T:
1. Is bandwidth the problem? Fine. Reduce my bandwidth but charge me less. Or
2. Is money the problem? Fine. Give me unlimited bandwidth at the price which you agreed to sell it to me. Oh, agreements were the best thing in the world back when you forbade us to have class action lawsuits, but now agreements are bad because you have to hold up your end of the deal? Hardly seems fair now...

they assign something that they don't have or don't guarantee. That's wrong. The cap is the amount you can download its not your bandwidth. Bandwidth is the connection between you and your isp. That's what they assign more than what they have. A user can't use more bandwidth than he's got. They want to throttle people who uses all of the bandwidth available to him and that a person pays for. Which is wrong. They advertise faster connections to get customers. But that's more bandwidth. So lets get the customers by advertising something we can't guarantee and if we run short we will just rob them with some lame excuse and throttle their connection. They signed a contract there's nothing they can do about it
