ID Software RAGE - October 4 2011

So how is the multiplayer going to work? Co-Op is separate from the normal story ark.

I watched them play it for 45 minutes straight at PAX East. The graphics are awesome but the gameplay looked boring and consolized.

Yeah... I think Carmack regrets his decision on what he did for Rage.. How is Doom 4? Is it going to be on the same engine? Or were they planning on consolizing it to hell too?

I pre-ordered it from Newegg, but I am waffling and may cancel.

Got it for $42, but still - not convinced.

Where is the best place to pre-order this game? Taking into account, price and pre-order bonuses.

I am looking forward to it. I dont need anything fancy just some fun run and gun that feels right. I dont think there has ever been an id game that didnt feel right if you know what i mean.

I am hopeful, but skeptical. I'll have to wait for reviews for sure. I'm also disappointed by the "megatexture" thing. I mean I understand that it is a took to make things look cool, but it unfortunately totally excludes DIY modders and mappers because of the insane memory requirements to compile a map (iD says they have 192GB systems for it).

Did they move back the release date slightly? I'm sure it was under a week before, but now it's "1 week, 2 days and 11 hours".

Same engine, but engine does not maketh the graphics. According to carmack doom 4 is supposed to have 3 times the graphics quality or something.

You play the single player and talk to people or something or find these "legends" about events that happened. Then you can play these missions with other people. Theres another mode too but I can't remember the details (might be some kind of race mode )!

id software never was good in making stories.

they make great engines but they lack in storyline. I thought their merger would have helped them out.

I find having no dedicated servers is rather annoying. Never liked a stupid matchmaking service, never seems to work properly for me. And also, judging by the screenshots of the game, there is no health bar, I would have expected ID Software, creators of the legendary FPS shooters of Quake and Doom to add one, somewhat disappointed, but I will still get this game because it looks interesting.

Here is some info on the versus and co-op modes...

Rage has two multiplayer modes: Combat Rally and Legends of the Wasteland. In Combat Rally, up to six players compete in a free-for-all match that takes place in an arena designed to make use of the vehicles. The objective is to collect rally points that appear around the arena while killing your opponents and stealing their points.

Legends of the Wasteland is a series of two-player bonus co-op missions based on stories that you hear about as you play the single player campaign.

Despite id's history of storyline creativity (or lack thereof), I'm really looking forward to it & getting into the world of RAGE. Every video I've watched, it felt like a very immersive FPS (like BioShock 1) but with a Quake 3 twist to gameplay.

as much as an iD fanboy i used to be, still am to a degree, id love to say I was buying this day one. I think while carmack is easily one of the most intelligent and capable devs out there, I think he and his team have lost touch with what the hardcore audience wants, so I will be waiting for multiple opinions.

I think Carmack and the boys realize they need a hit with this one or they will be consigned to the scrap heap of yesterday. With that in mind I prepurchased and expect it to be a good game that will bring them back to relative importance in the gaming industry.

I like what I've seen so far and I hope the game rocks, but I won't be surprised if it's a stinker.

Its one week away now (Oct 4th)...a little over a week (Oct 7th) for non-US folks...

I've been following up on this, and the mechanics sound very fun. The quick reflex of Quake 3 in some of the videos seems very apparent. Story seems very involved, but that's just what I've seen and/or read.

In any case, I agree. id software requires something to get them back to importance. This is their ticket. If Rage flops, then it will be very hard for me to get excited over any other game. This is mainly why I haven't pre-ordered. I learned from my mistake on Quake 4. I will wait for reactions from those who get it day 1, and then make my move. It is very interesting to me that ... 15 years after Quake that id software went from the most premier developer in FPS to a "meh, we'll see."

Multiplayer is vehicle combat, wtf do you need a dedicated server for?

If id had made a game all about tank battles, like in Quake 4, I'd buy it. I thought it was the best part of the game.

It will do until Borderlands 2, I suppose.

Yes, Borderlands 2 and Bioshock Infinite are my two most eagerly awaited games for 2012. I loved the first Borderlands and racked up over 60+ hours playing it twice and all the expansion packs. Maybe it's just me, but Rage looks remarkably like Borderlands right down to the vehicle combat. It's like id was too far into development to change Rage when they were blindsided by Borderlands. Still, I will try this as I haven't played an id game since Doom 3 in 2004 so I'm looking forward to it!

I"m on the fence as well, too mainly high profile games this year that have been utter crap
and I'm tired of getting burned, i.e....Brink, DNF, Dead Island....

Critic reviews mean nothing to me, I'll be going purely off of the users

Dedicated server is mandatory for good multiplayer on the PC IMO.

Right for an FPS where registration, latency and reliability are pivotal. In games like SC2, LoL, DOTA or RAGE's Car Racing MP P2P works just fine.

That fact that it is P2P multiplayer is, for me, enough to cancel my pre-order.

I really like Space Marine MP, but it's just so hampered by the console style lobby system that, while fun, is not something with longevity.

I can see Rage going for $19.99 by the holidays or sometime next year.

I just cancelled it on Newegg - I guess it's more of a cancel "request" but since it's not shipping for a while, I think it should be OK.

I just don't see this as a $60 game - or even a $42 game.

I just don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about this not having dedicated servers. The multiplayer is not an FPS, it's a small driving based blast em up. There's no reason why a P2P setup isn't suitable for this style of play...

Unless I'm wrong on all of this but jeez.

There is no reason why they can't provide software for doing dedicated servers either. Options are good, being forced to use an inferior method is just piss poor even if it fits the needs of what it is doing ok.

I have no problem there are no dedicated servers as its not a game that even needs them. The multiplayer is just a added on mini game of sorts as this is mostly a SP game. If this was quake, or battlefield, or anything fps related. Then yea sure dedicated servers would be nice. But for a racing twisted metal type thing its not really needed. I really dont think people will be playing this multi player for long and dedicated servers would not change it. This is a single player game with mutliplayer added in for the checkmark on the box.

I am tired of supporting developers with consolitis.

The game looks fun and interesting and I would like to play it, but at this point in time, given the other options, I have pushed it so far down on my list that it's not worth pre-ordering and I don't think I want to pay $42 for it.

As of today, I am willing to pay $20 for it and I am willing to wait.

That is my assessment of the value of the game to me, right now.

I am leaning towards pre-ordering BF3 and Skyrim, but I have been burned too many times by Bethesda (FOV, Brink) and EA (horrible BC2 launch, horrible, unchecked cheating problems) to just blindly pre-order their games.

The game I am most excited about is Guild Wars 2 - I have all the collector editions and almost all of their DLC (from GW1) and I would pay almost any amount for a nice "collector edition" of GW2. You know those ridiculous editions that come with an expensive, indulgent "toy" or statue or whatever and cost $150+? I would go for that for GW2 - sight unseen, one year in advance, but EA and Bethesda need to show me the goods first.

That's how I feel about it.

It's amazing how many around here either don't know this or have simply forgotten...and it is pointed out in nearly every Rage thread so far because someone says something about liking/hating Quake IV and attributing it to Id.

I know, was the reason why it wasn't on Steam till recently as well. A lot of people just associate a dev with a franchise. Like most people think CoD is all Infinity Ward still. I can understand how they get confused if they don't follow gaming like a lot of us here and on other forums do.

I jumped on the Newegg deal when it was $42 as well. I hope it shows up early so I can get it installed and just wait for Steam to unlock it, though I've never gone this route before. Will I be able to install it before it's fully active on Steam?

Either way, it should be a fun way to pass the weeks until BF3 is in my mailbox.
