I've been a big fan of the PSP pretty much ever since it was released. I had a PSP-1000 for the longest time that I ran CFW on and all that crap. Then I decided that I was bored with the homebrew scene and switch to a PSP Go. Which despite what everyone told me, I love. I think is the best PSP Sony made. The only real drawback for me is the few games that are only available on UMD that I can no longer play.

I've been reading all the latest news on the PlayStation Vita that's succeeding the PSP, and I'm really disappointed. I think that this is going to be a huge flop for Sony. Here are my reasons why I think the PSVita is going to fail.

  • It's huge. Besides, being thinner than the original PSP-1000, overall it's larger
  • Rear touchpad. I'm sorry, I think this is the most retarded idea in the world. It's a stupid gimmick feature.
  • Battery life. 3-5 hours of gaming, with no bluetooth, default brightness, headphones, and no networking. This is the same battery life as a Sega Nomad.
  • Price. $250 for the wifi only model. The PlayStation 3 is now $250 isn't it?
  • Media format. Sony hasn't learned their lesson with UMD, they're using yet another proprietary format for he game cartridges. This was the perfect opportunity for them to go all digital. And to make matters worse, they're also using a proprietary format of memory expansion cards too. What was wrong with Memory Stick Pro Duo's or M2's?
  • LiveArea. The XMB interface works well and looks elegant. They're replacing it with something that looks like it's from Fisher Price.

I think I'll be sticking with my PSP Go for a while longer.

To be fair the vita has more to offer than the ps3 including cross game chat, faster loading, and portable! I loved the pspgo as well sold it a while ago but looking forward to replaying the 50 odd PSP games I have on the psn, they hopefully will work well on the vita. The vita has the same battery life as the psp/pspgo and sony has sold over 71 million psps so far!!No one complains about Nintendo having their own cartridge format, be patient, there will be micro SD to PS vita card adaptors in no time!

I thought the Rear touchpad a gimmick feature too. Now seeing it in action with certain games like LBP, Modnation Racers, Uncharted and that ball rolling one, I can see some pretty cool ideas with this.

Vita is looking to have an impressive line up of games, from launch and even down the road. I think it will be fine.

@Rash
The Vita has been confirmed to play "most" PSN games you've downloaded. Sony said they are looking for a way to help out UMD games too. Not sure how they'll do that but I hope it's good.

This thing wont sell that well considering the entry price is essentially going to be $300. That would make it the most expensive console of any kind on the market. While it doesn't shock me that Sony is forcing more proprietary nonsense on people (looooooooooooooooooog history of that after all), I still think it is nothing but BS. Forcing people to use Memory Stick Pro Duos and what not was bad enough, but I really don't understand why they have decided to use a new format just for the Vita (outside of the fact that they can charge a massive premium on it). You would think they would have learned their lesson after they released PS3s with a $500+ dollar starting point. Oh well, I'd bet we'll see a pretty large price cut on the Vita just like we did with the 3DS....well....maybe not THAT big....

Hmm, it will be quite worrying initially, some old PSP games were over 1gb in size so god knows what games like uncharted and resistance vita will be. I can't see anyone buying the memory cards at those prices, fook that. I'll wait for some third party to make micro SD adapters for it, hopefully they will be out by the time it hits europe. I already have 32gb in psn games as well lol!

I have to admit, I was one of the biggest supporters of the early Vita previews, but my excitement is being diminished by what I'm hearing now, it's rather unfortunate . . . . .

hardware-wise i think its going to be an amazing machine, easily worth the price of admission. it is the software and media format issues that worry me. i wish theyd quit being such cockgobblers and just use sdhc.

I will be buying this for sure. My PSP is still my favorite piece of consumer electronics I ever purchased.

If anything they should have used m2 with that being their own variant.

i'll grab it when there's more than 5 games i want to play
price isn't part of concern for me

I think I'll wait for a Vita-2000. I love my psp-1000, it's still chuggin' along after 5 years of owning it, I can get by with it for another year or two.

My biggest worries are battery life and storage media costs, once those go up and down (respectively), I'll jump on board. The biggest reason I sold my 3DS was the battery life, hoping that the Vita would be long enough to tide me over on until 3DS lite or w/e, but it looks like more of the waiting game for both companies.

I just don't have the money to justify $300+ for a portable when I have to make sacrifices in those above areas. If I had paid $169 for the 3DS way back when, then maybe I would have kept it.

With the stupid chunky extra joystick addition to the 3DS, the laughable battery life on both (non user replaceable on the Vita, btw), and the huge costs on removable storage for the Vita, I just don't see myself updating my portable set up until the refresh in hardware for both hits.

If it totally blows me away and there are some good games I'll spend the money. Otherwise I'll wait until it's around $200.

The biggest detractor for me. But Sony has released a slim version of every gaming system they've ever released, so there's always that.

Media format. Sony hasn't learned their lesson with UMD, they're using yet another proprietary format for he game cartridges.
All gaming systems use a proprietary media format. Where have you been?

The format of the game discs is irrelevant. The format of the memory cards is a problem. Sony had the best philosophy of all HD era consoles for storage. Any laptop hard drive worked. Awesome. Now they're going in the other direction. No doubt they saw how successful proprietary storage was for MS and want a piece of that action.

They should have gone all digital.

Every Vita game will be available as a digital download as well.

The kicker, however is that the memory cards are now proprietary and will be required for certain games.
That doesn't make much difference to me. I won't feign indignation over a fairly standard practice. Day 1. Guaranteed.

at least improvement over UMD is that
you can actually save progress / store dlc on game disc this time
and yes every game will be available as digital download

I like that they will have digital downloads, it shoulda been that way for every PSP game, then nobody would need to pirate older PSP games, that was a huge problem with the PSP, piracy was very rampant with the PSP handheld throughout it's entire life.

Having DD and good prices would solve that problem somewhat, and make it easier for you to acquire older Vita titles that you want on your system.

Sony has announced an external battery pack which could raise the overall length to 9-15 hours.

Yeah I know its another separate thing Sony would make you buy. With an OLED screen and using memory for storage and games, they're trying to make the best use of all the battery power they can fit in the device.

Also, Sony hasn't announced the US prices for the memory cards. I would bet it would be quite a bit less than $120. If you use the same conversion as the price difference for the actual device, it comes out to $90 USD for the 32 GB. Not great but much better than 124. Remember that not all memory cards are at the same speed. Is it likely they are using class 10 or better?

Great, something to make the device even bigger and less portable.

The 32GB will probably be $99.99, which isn't too much more than a 32GB pro duo.

I don't see why you would want to sacrifice the 5inch screen and controls. If they made it as small as a smart phone, it wouldn't be any better than a smart phone.

I think pretty soon, phones will start eroding this market. Probably already happening.

Ill be buying this day 1. It looks awesome for handheld gaming. I just hope the US launch gets a bunch of good games.

pre-order for this piece began today in japan
and all major retailers's pre-order stocks were gone within an hour or so

Friend in Japan said within 5-10 minutes, most retailer sites crashed, then within 35-40 minutes, every major online retailer was sold out.
B&M pre-orders start in a few hours, queues are building quickly due to lack of online availability.

i feel like this will be doing much better in japan, and that the situation might be much different for presales here in the states. when does the us presale period begin?

it has already begun you can pre-order one on amazon right now i believe

ps3 still exists despite Xbox pc-like easy programming. The PS-vita following suit might still survive despite common easier smart phone programming.

Sad but true.
I will be going down with the ship, however.
cellphone gaming is comparably terrible.

so true. i have been working my way through the original duke nukem on iphone for a long time. the controls are just so hard to use. my dsi works for my portable gaming needs though, and probably will for a while still. i might get a vita used or after the first price drop/shrink.

I bought the PSP on launch and although my unit had the infamous cluster of dead pixels I cherished it and took it everywhere with me.
I used it more for video and bought a few games and it was such a sexy looking device.
Once I heard of the Vita I sold the PSP and all the games/accessories I have preparing to get a Vita however now I'm not.
I don't regret selling my PSP however I regret the insane amount of $$$ one will need to put on the Vita.

I'd have to agree. I've never had that much fun on these phone games. Controls are just terrible.
