Need cheap PCI-E 1x card to drive extra monitors. Must be NVIDIA since I already have NVIDIA and don't want to deal with two sets of drivers. The purpose-built ones on NewEgg are $50 (not looking at Quadros here).

I hear someone dremeled a 1x slot and got a 16x card to work? If that's the case, then the dedicated 1x is no longer necessary...

if you cut the 1x slot to be open ended a x16 card should work fine just don't expect gaming performance out of it (as long as your mobo isn't retarded it should work). Oh and you will void the warranty on your mobo. (disclaimer: if you mess something up I take no repsonsibility, if you fearful of doing this just get a x1 card from newegg)

My old asus a8n-e had an open ended x4 slot (really a x1 slot though) and x16 cards worked fine in it. The bit coin miners get x1 risers and connect them to high end cards as well.

or you can void your GPU warranty and cut it down in length. Either one is kinda expensive. Cutting the riser would be easier.

I'm also going to look into 1x-to-16x riser cards. The cost of that plus a cheapo video card may be less than a dedicated 1x card. If I had a Dremel tool, I'd attack the mobo. But I don't have one, and I'm not buying a Dremel just to do this one thing. Don't know anyone who has a Dremel either.

Hint: Hot knife (that you can throw away).

Don't have any flames (all electric appliances). Would boiling water do it as a heat source? Should I turn on the burner and stick the knife blade there?

You wouldn't get enough heat to do the whole thickness in one swipe.

You'd have to keep heating and it wouldn't be very consistant.

I'd be worried what it might do to the MB.

If I do that, I'm going to try the top side of the knife (not the rounded bottom side).

I don't think boiling water would be hot enough.

And moot point. Understanding of own mobo fail--there's another PCI-E slot (that holds up to 16x @ 4x) at the bottom. It's clear of obstructions. Never mind.
