Google's practice of copying things that it can't buy is pissing people off? Say it isn't so. :D

"This is (at least) the fourth time in the two years or so that Google has taken this approach," notes Jay Yarow at Business Insider, citing similar strategy moves with attempts to buy Groupon, Path and Yelp. However, copying smaller companies products has long been the modus operandi for some major players in Silicon Valley. As Steve Jobs famously said of the Macintosh in a 1994 interview, "Good artists copy. Great artists steal."

I'm not sure what the problem is here. If they want something and they can't buy it, why shouldn't they build it? Where is it written that there can only be one proprietary mobile magazine product? Tell that to all the other established companies that are doing the same thing.

Agreed, however I think Google is running the risk of becoming too diversified if they keep going in that direction. I'm a fan of sticking with what you're good at (within reason). Granted, there's probably a reason I'm not an executive at Google.

Google is great at making clean, open and better versions of popular products. They'll also make sure that their application also feature their unobtrusive ads, because, you know, that's how they actually make money. They should just keep doing that I say.

when do u guys think google will step in gaming industry, either buying or stealing?

I know that people like to attribute everything to Teh Steve but he actually copied it from Pablo Picasso.

The issue is not Google doing copycat products. The issue is whether Google would leverage their dominance in Search to prop up their other copycat products.

Isn't copying how Sony got into the console business. A business deal went sour with Nintendo(or Sega) and they decided they can do it better?

They almost are already.
Phone/tablets are becoming a huge market for gaming devices, I believe it is Verizon who advertises a Google Android tablet about gaming on the go or something? Now will Google start to produce games themselves, doubt it, I see them investing directly into a firm to produce games for their devices though. Maybe throw big money at EA to make a few exclusive games for Android.

It was Nitendo, as Nitendo wanted to go to a disc based console they worked with Sony as a supplier and basically a contractor for the design. When the deal went sour (basically Sony pulled out in the eleventh hour) they finished the work and released it as the Playstation. This force Nitendo hurry out the N64.

always has been like that sadly, well, compare it to Apple's trend, atleast other companies offer to buy you first, I doubt that's what is happening with our all time "fruit" company :D

i agree, google isn't copying much of anyone. yeah, groupon deal fell through but if you actually read about it, it wasn't google or groupon's fault that the deal didn't happen.

Google = Innovative. They made their OWN "groupon" after they could NOT acquire Groupon (due to legal issues, not greed -- which I thought also, for years)

and don't forget... google innovates lots of products, and of course they have bought every good thing they can get their hands on, WHO WOULDN'T?!

Plus, people are COPYING GOOGLE AS WE TYPE THIS (see: facebook copying google+ as one prime example recently, obviously facebook copied google+ in many avenues of social media)

They already have the platform, imagine Google Earth in 10 years.

Prolly not wargames or other killing, but social gaming of some sort.

Buying "The Sims" franchise and implement it in Google Earth could be one way.

Maybe he said that implying Picasso was good, but he is great? Jobs does seem like an egomaniac.

By the way, Google bought http://www.thedealmap.com/ ... seems to have TONS more deals than shitty, Female-infested deals of Groupon and Livingsocial.

95% of the deals on Groupon & Livingsocial are created for women who don't work, and use their husbands money. A (straight) man has almost no business on these sites, it appears.
