A Picture I Took - 2011

What camera did you use for the waterfall, and what settings? That's a very colorful and sharp picture...

Thanks! Ben got the settings right, though I'll add that I was using the 24-105 f/4L with a circular polarizer (hence the color) and a 2-stop ND filter.

Mt. Baker Ski Area hike yesterday. Too much unsafe snowpack prevented us from doing the chain lakes loop, so we doubled back and went up Wild Goose to the Artist's point comfort station. Snapshots more than Photographs, but still fun to take.

Any recommendations for a set of filters for camera and lenses in my sig?
What budget, and what exactly are you looking for? Circular Polarizes, ND, combo, other? What do you shoot primarily (landscapes, portrait, architecture...)?

My budget is as cheap as possible, I don't really know anything about polarizers other than what I've read, seen examples of on this forum, so I guess a combo, mainly shoot portraits and landscapes.

You're going about it the wrong way. Not to derail this thread too much, but if your priorities are to get a filter that is cheap, don't buy one at all. It will do more harm than good. However, if you're willing to spend about $80, than this might fit your needs: B+W CPL MRC.

I say get a cokin p filter holder and maybe some gradient filters.... A Polarizing filter should be a must. You can get a B+W Circular Polarizer or Hoya Pro polarizer cheap off ebay or photography forums.

I disagree. While it's true that cheap filters can exhibit flaring and other issues, that just doesn't happen very often in real-world usage. The most noticeable difference I've found is that the cheap ones tend to be a PITA to clean. If we were talking UV filters I would agree with you: buy a good one or don't buy one at all, because they're not all that necessary. By comparison, there are certain kinds of photography where a circular polarizer is downright indispensable. Better to have a cheap one than not have one at all.

For the record, I actually use the CPL you linked. I just advocate starting small :).

^See, the problem I'm having is with the few select people from my camera club, who go to Walmart, pick up a 4-pack of variety filters for $40, and call it a day. It aggravates the hell out of me. They attach those $5 ND filters to their $1k lenses, and wonder why the color shift isn't even across the frame. WTF? I'm not suggesting everyone to go for Singh-Ray filters right away, but don't make stupid purchases either.

Matteos has the advantage of the 52mm thread (for both, 35mm and 15-55mm). With such a small filter size, he can get a decent filter at low price.
