OCZ Solid 3 60gb ssd - $84.99 - $10 mir = $74.99 [Shellshocker NOW!]

Newegg Shellshocker email sitting in my inbox says: $59.99 After $25 MIR

The Newegg front page says: $74.99 (after $10.00 Mail-In Rebate).

Too confusing, wish they had their information properly updated when the deals "go live".

Ahhh I just received that same email. I wonder if it is accurate or not. The MIR attached to the deal is within date range, but sometimes they have one day only MIRs. If the email is accurate and newegg fixes it, that would only sweeten the deal. :)

In for one.
$60 is pretty sweet for sata3.

What do y'all think about this as a boot drive? Or should it just be for apps?

Both a $10 and a $25 rebate show up in cart but only the $10 one is found when searching at the rebate site.

I just cancelled my order.
My Motherboard Asus Sabertooth x58 apparently would never get the full SATA 3 speed anyway.

I may go SATA2 or just forget SSD until my next full system upgrade.

your miss out. my dad's rig with a athlon II x2 would feel snappier with his ssd drive ves your i7 system with a mechanical drive.

^^^^^^^^^^^

Even though you are only capable of SATAII, you would still be capable of reaching max speeds @ 300mb/s... even though SATAIII has more lead way, you would not be able to tell the difference in load times.

Transfer rates, another story, and that's only if you're transferring large large large files. Even then, with a 60gb SSD, I would imagine you would use it for a boot drive and maybe a few games... not a storage drive...

I have a Crucial M4 & a Kingston SSD in my rig. I bought the Kingston last year and had it as my boot drive, and then popped in the Crucial M4 this year and it is now my boot drive. I cannot tell the difference one bit. SSDs are just that fast. The Crucial M4 is rated almost 2x as fast as the Kingston. I maybe shaved off .3-.5 seconds off my load times. xD

As Nexx said, your loss.

Alright, you've convinced me. I ordered another one.
Sometimes I just need to be smacked around before I see the truth.

Lucky it was still in stock.

Whats the reliability on these? Its been a while since I researched OCZ and sandforce ssd. Are there still issues with sandforce drives? thx

I am running 2 Vertex LE 50GB in raid and so far no issue, these are pretty old now.

Of course I am deathly afraid to upgrade the firmware or do anything to change them.

Thanks for the response. I did a quick search and it seems that it's hit or miss with these drives. One thing for certain, there are definitely still issues that have not been resolved. I guess I will be holding off. Not worth the possible headache.

I am thinking about this for my OS drive. I think my Intel Gen 1 80GB is getting a bit long in the tooth. ;)

I'm just starting an OpenIndiana + Napp-It build and I'm wondering if this would be a good boot drive for OpenIndiana?

In for one, gonna throw it in my DM1Z laptop, not a huge deal if it dies.. also picked up an M4 for my desktop.

tempting, but I certainly do NOT trust any sort of rebate from anyone! Why can't Newegg be the buffer for these rebates... (i.e. knock another $25 off due to rebate, and Newegg gets reimbursed from OCZ). Pass the savings directly and immediately to the customer.

Because then the rebate would only be about $2-$3. It is the purpose of a rebate, dangle a large discount and trust the customer won't turn it in. If it was guaranteed the discount would always be lower.

Sweet price, but I will not buy an ocz drive untill they can prove a reliable ssd to me. Too many issues since they started making ssd's for me.

Good luck to everyone that bit on the deal.

Well, boy am I glad you guys talked me into getting this. Turns out the Marvell controller isn't that bad after all. This thing is a rocket!

You're not likely to notice any speed deficiencies with the Marvell controller, vs. the Intel in anything other than benchmarks. This is a fast drive regardless.

I have it as my OS drive in my WHS2011 box.(Gigabyte z68 mobo, connected to the intel SATA III controller) Here's what get:

I don't know how you guys are getting such fast speeds. I am running them in raid 0 and getting much slower speeds. Can you guys post AS SSD bencharks?

I am getting about 2X so don't think my setup seems fine.
What are your CrystalDiskMark bench scores? Make sure you set it to <All 0x00, 0Fill> before running.

Also, what motherboard/SATA controller are you using?

I'll run AS on my box with this drive in it when I get home.

Guess, my setup is fine, but using this setting, doesn't seem very accurate, like the ATTO Disk bench. The regular settings seem more of a realistic benchmark since it offers similar numbers to AS SSD.

Which AS test did you run?
