Intel Leaks i7-2700k

It doesn't make sense that they would release a new Sandy Bridge CPU. Tom's Hardware reports that Sandy Bridge-E will be out by the end of November, so it doesn't seem like a smart move to come out with a CPU so close to the next generation.

The e stands for enterprise, its a different market.

You got it all wrong buddy.

Sandy Bridge-E is not a new generation. It is just a different segment (hence the Extreme designation.)

Sandy Bridge (and Ivy Bridge) will be split into 2 platforms: 1155 and 2011.

The two platforms are not "generations", just different segments of the same product.

^^ Oh thanks for the clarification. I'm more of an AMD guy so I don't know as much about Intel. I think Sandy Bridge E will most likely outperform BD tho.

Huh, interesting...
...and also utterly meaningless unless it has more cache, considering the 2600K is already unlocked and can be pushed to 4.5GHz easily.

If it pushes down the i7-2600K prices, I might swap out my 2500K. I could use the hyperthreading again.

:( just bought a 2600k, oh well I got it for $250 new so good deal either way.

of course it will.. but its also in a totally different niche market segment and pricing.

Looks like Intel is shoring up its SB on LGA1155 in the understanding that most of their core market is not going to be interested in the LGA2011 socket which is really more of a heavy duty workstation platform. That's why I want it, but it's definitely not a platform for most computer users. The comparo on benchys between 2700K and 3820 is going to be interesting... but with the SB-E coming in at 3.6GHz nonturbo I think I'd plunk my money on the SB-E.

Intel CPU prices never really seem to drop though. They just replace the older chips with new ones at a similar price point.

I'm guessing the 2600k will be about $270 if a 2700k comes out, because they have a $90 gap between the 2500k and 2600k right now.

Look back at Q series pricing, I think this story will be the same

They had some competition in those times.

Ever since Nehalem came out they stopped making price drops and instead are just increasing clock speeds over time. Same for AMD.

I'm building a rig this month and went with the 2500k as it was a good deal and I am just going to buy an ivy bridge when they come out anyway. I'd wait for that.

Not sure they are coming out with this chip but I guess they are trying to use it as a stop gap.

I should have been more clear. IMO Any price drop is likely to be minor. The Q9x series held value for a long, long time. And as you point out...

Is this like the q6600 and q6700??

Q6700 came out 6 months before the Q6600 came out.
the released the Q6600 to have an "affordable" (read: $300) quad core.

If a 2700k is released, it will likely come out at the same price as the 2600k and push that one down slightly. Only by a few bucks probably though.

the other possibility is this will replace the 2600k completely. I don't see them EOLing the 2600k, but it's possible.

2500K ... 6MB L3
2600K ... 8MB L3
2700K .. ??MB L3

Could it be 2.5MB per core this time, with 2600K holding onto its price-point, and 2700K simply slotting above?

I doubt there's more than 8 MB L3 on silicon for 1155 line.

It's just a slightly faster clocked 2600k, no big deal. It's not like they're trying to push the performance, the chips have plenty of headroom. I don't blame Intel, charging more for the same product is every businesses dream!

Looks like a planned leak, except it also looks like Intel hadn't planned on AMD being late AGAIN, so it has a bit less effect.

Not necessarily. The release of this could push down the price of the 2600K.

Doubtful. More likely Intel will stop producing 2600k chips, and retailers would lower the price of the 2600k as they clear stock. Once they sell out of the chips, they won't be selling any more, completely replaced by the 2700k at the price point the 2600k was at.

This has been Intel's business model for the past few years. Release a higher clocked chip, and stop producing the slower one.

So this is probably the exact same chip as the 2600k, but the default multi is probably a tick higher?

I have a 2600 CPU and mobo. And now that they are releasing a new CPU for this platform, I have an excuse for buying a new 1155 mobo with sli/xfire because my current mobo doesn't have that feature.

Just a small uptick...

The 2500K and the 2600k perform very close. This way the price differential looks better anyways.

Regardless I guess I will have to wait until they release a 4.1GHz processor before I upgrade that's what my 2500k is set at without even trying.

All marketing. Perhaps they know the BD was outperforming it in one small aspect but not anymore with the 2700k. A little premature if you ask me on the release.

Price for 2700k: 340–350 USD ...in case you missed that.
Same as 2600k except +100MHz

Yeah i'm assuming it will come out at the same price. Just like the i7 930 came out and replaced the i7 920 at the same price with a 1 higher multiplier.

What do you guys think... is it worth waiting for over a 2600k at this point?

>= 2600K has been on the leaked road maps for at least 2 quarters.

I see no reason to wait for the 2700K ..grab a 2600k ...they look to be essentially the same chip at this point

It could be worth it if its a new stepping or something that maybe overclocks better but we would have to wait for it to be released to see that info probably.

Yeah yeah

Will it do 4.8ghz all day long like my 2600K.

Yes and if it has 8mb cache then guess what????? Its the same damn thing. I guess great for those just now adopting this under featured 1155 platform. Great processor, disturbingly weak set of features even for a midrange platform.

i am not buying a 2700, i just am happy that they are still developing cpus for this platform.
