HP Pavilion dm1z

If anyone is worried about a wait, the dm1z is available in bestbuy stores now. It is 499 with 3 gigs of ram instead of the base config of 2. So price is about the same.

My DM1z arrived a couple days ago, nice system, but full to the gills with bloatware. Does anyone have a guide or download links to the various software and driver packages I'd need to reinstall if I do a clean install of windows 7?

They sell a Restore DVD (2 DVDs) that has all those goodies for 19 bucks plus shipping. DVD 1 I believe is the OS with bloatware. DVD 2 is drivers with apps.

Or before you do a clean install. go to HPs website and download all the drivers or least the wifi/ethernet drivers so you can go online and grab the rest

I thought MS stated that with Vista forward, OS DVD was OS only and no crap?

hmmm... Perhaps the OS DVD is only OS? DVD 1 is System Recovery DVD. DVD 2 is Application and Driver Recovery DVD. so guess you may be right on that one. get a nice clean install without the bloatware or perhaps pick and choose which bloatware you like (assuming it even lets you). I personally like the HP Support Assist.

Further update, Best Buy currently has the dm1z on sale now for 379.99 in stores for the 3GB ram models / 250GB hard drive.

Seems like a good price if anyone is thinking of picking one up.

I just bought it, I'm going to use an HP Infolab rebate and get $100 back too.

Just letting everyone know. I've been able to add in a Qualcomm Gobi2000 GPS/3g card to my built-to-order model. It was detected just fine. HP drivers and HP connection manager see it.

One thing I noticed is that this model does not like sandforce SSD's... SF SSD's would BSOD after wake-up from sleep. My slower kingston SSD actually feels much faster, and doesnt BSOD. After adding in an SSD, fresh installing and upping the memory a bit my DM1Z will easily hit over 3200 in PC-mark vantage.

I bet that a C300 in Sata II mode would push the score even higher.

Does anyone know a way to get the DM1z to work with a non-HP approved WLAN card? I bought an Intel 6300 mini PCI-e Wi-Fi card that I plan on putting into the laptop later this year (after I am done using it in my desktop), but when I tried to install it for a test run, the laptop gave an error and wouldn't boot.

AFAIK there's no way at this point in time. The bios files needs to match a checksum or have a signature of some sort and if it doesn't match the flasher it's going to error out. This has been tried. A bios with the restrictions removed has apparently been made but there's no way to flash/test it. You need a whitelisted card.

I picked one of these up to compliment my beefy desktop and I've got to say I'm really impressed with it. It packs quite a punch for being so tiny. The speakers this thing comes with was a welcome surprise as well. Well worth the $400 I spent on it.

Followup. After OCing to 1.8Ghz I ran PCMark07 and compared the results.
Total scores [email protected] [email protected]
The individual scores were so close as to make no difference. Some a little faster, some a little slower.
Probably was hitting some thermal throttling while OC'd.
I returned to stock speeds. Was fun to play with it.

I just ordered a Crucial M4 128GB SSD (going to put my 64GB in the laptop) and 8GB of ram to upgrade my DM1z in time for the Win 8 consumer preview. Anyone else upgrade their's? I've had mine, since launch and just wanted to help make it feel new again to hold of buying an ultrabook.
