Asus Transformer 16GB $349.99 at Sears

stupid tax :( with nearly 10% tax rate it makes it basically same price as many online etailers. Are there any coupons or discounts that can be applied to it further?

You can call Amazon and pretty please ask them to price match. It sometimes works.

Now with my Touchpad in hand, I just can't justify buying on of these :( Shame because I really wanted the transformer.

sell the touchpad, buy transformer?

From the comparisons/reviews I've read, the Transformer edges out the Touchpad. I was going to hop on the Touchpad bandwagon until I found out about the Transformer. If I were to buy a tablet right now, TF is it. Still waiting on a "gotta have it" price, although $350 is tempting.

I was trying to get a 16GB TP for the $99 price (&*^%*$ vendor cancelled on me) to hold me over until the Android tablet market matured a bit. The Transformer for $350 is a good deal if you need a tablet now.

The new transformer is supposed to be out soon with considerably better hardware. If I remember right, it was supposed to be available at the same pricepoint ($399/$499).

With that said, the TF is one helluva tablet. I bought one for my wife a while back when Office Max was pricematching the $100 off any tablet coupon from staples. It's very nice.

I ended up with a touchpad, which was originally at the same price. Before using the touchpad, I would have instantly gone for the Android device. However, webOS is actually pretty nice and I'm going to stick with it.

If I were to go out and get a tablet today, it would definately be a Transformer. I've had to do zero support on it because things just work. They've also pushed a 3.2 update to Android, which I believe is the latest honeycome update.

I've heard its best to wait for the new version; Thats when I my bite. Plus its OOS online; and not carried at my stores

Any idea when?
I'm looking at getting a tablet for clinical rotations, can't make up my mind. If the TF2 is coming soon I may wait and see what it is like.
Torn between that or an iPad 2.

if an ipad 2 is within your budget you should just get one. despite all the hate it gets online, they're actually quite nice. i personally hate apple products, but will admit the ipad2 is a good product.

^^^ same here, but iPad has a good .chm reader and from what I have read, the mobile office apps from the same software vendor between iPad and android, the iPad version is more stable (DocsToGo for my example).
I need a good .chm reader and a system that doesn't crash more than anything. Although the keyboard expansion of the Transformer is pretty attractive.

QFT.

Although they're a bit expensive, Ipad 2 crushes, couldn't be happier.

QFT is a bit rude. However, if you can afford it...people usually can justify paying the premium for it. Basic economics. But, I still can't justify buying a tablet yet myself.

 are we thinking about the same QFT? :D

I have thought about an ipad2 as well. Too many options and not enough dough. I will hold out a while longer I think.

Me too... During the midst of the TP chaos I got a deal on a new iPad 2 32gb for $400... couldn't be happier.

$330 Toshiba Thrive arriving tomorrow. After all I'm a [H] guy and prefer function over form. All those full size ports (USB, SD, HDMI) and replaceable batery just make mor sense to me.

Hehe, I assure you I meant Quoted For Truth.:)

I prefer the Transformer over the Thrive. All the ports you mentioned are on the keyboard dock of the TF, plus the dock itself has built-in battery. TF also has superior screen with better viewing angles as it is an IPS.

Awesome, can't complain about that eh?

May I suggest a couple games?

Dungeon Hunter 2
Rage HD
Infinity Blade
Hunters HD
Tactical Soldier

And Kard Combat, cause I need more people to play.:D

I really like the screen on the transformer, and the industrial feel, but I'm holding out for the quad core refresh.

For what my rando internet opinion is worth... get the iPad.

We only have a few physicians using them so far but they couldn't be happier. This is a no brainer right now imo. iOS has FAR more EMR and general medical support than Android.

I'm praying that changes soon but I'd say for the near future, Android isn't going to be the go to for medicine. It's still viewed as too insecure right now by healthcare IT and healthcare government orgs.

DISCLAIMER: I don't care for iOS myself even though I use iPhones (only iOS and RIM are security cleared on our HIPPA controlled network). Android's not a choice and I got tired of carrying both phones (had a droid X for over a year). Regardless, iOS has far better support right now for our industry. I do really like my MBP (but it's not iOS... yet) but honestly, there are just as good Windows machines out there.

I agree an ipad is probably better than Android for healthcare use. Do they make a "good" stylus for those? Something better than a rubber ball on the end of a stick? Apparently not. Here's some info: http://www.imedicalapps.com/2011/02/ipad-stylus-review-best-handwriting-touch-screen/

You might need to go with a tablet that actually has _proper_ stylus support, like the HTC Flyer http://www.htc.com/www/tablets/htc-flyer/

That being said, I saw a guy using the Asus slate recently, and it is awesome. Very nice form factor, only slightly larger than the ipads and android tablets, and the full functionality would be very nice.

I however bought the Transformer from Office Depot during the Staples sale, and I love it. I use it constantly. It's definitely a luxury item...it is questionable how productive it really is. However I think I could definitely use it professionally if I bought the keyboard dock. As a toy, though, it is fantastic. E-mail, news, social media, general browsing, games, movies, youtube, etc is amazing. And it gets even better when you need to entertain the kids for 20 minutes while you do something else.

*snip*.

The need for a stylus never really comes up in clinical use. You're generally not writing much of anything. It's either dictated or drop list. You can always go into free text but that defeats the purpose of the device.

Almost $2.5 trillion was spent on healthcare in the US in 2009 (source: http://articles.latimes.com/2010/feb/04/nation/la-na-healthcare4-2010feb04) It makes perfect sense that iPads are used instead of lower cost Android/Linux alternatives. Using Apple products is the most efficient way to piss our healthcare dollars away.

Well, it's attempting to be spent. Getting approved for the spending is one thing and actually getting the money is another. And not to take away from the joke, but the iPads aren't part of that money. It's infrastructure money. At least for our 47 hospitals tablets aren't in those budgets. Tablets and phones are generally clinician purchased and if they meet the sec reqs they are allowed on the hospital networks.

True, can't think of a need for a stylus. We hand sign orders that stay in the pt's chart. No other reason can I think of a stylus would be necessary in the hospital.

Most commonly (or damn near always) when an iPad is purchased for healthcare, it is rarely with public dollars or grants. Most of the healthcare dollars in the form of grants for IT stuff is to get out of date offices up to speed, computerizing their charts to meet CMS standards, etc.
When you typically see them they are purchased by a private group (or individual provider) with their own dollars.

Thing about government spending is it's a use it or lose it situation. Each government office building gets a yearly budget, let's say $100,000. By the end of the year before the that $100k is used up, the office decides to have an annual wish list for shit they don't really need but want. So they gather whatever funds they have left to buy a bunch of high priced shit just because they can.

I'll check them out when I get burned out of GarageBand :0

these days i don't think very many people are in situations where they have to worry about "losing it"

The dock adds weight and $150 It effectively transform your tablet in to a netbook at double the cost.
The addition of an full USB in the Thrive allows (without any addon) direct file sharing with an usb drive in addition to be able to attach a mouse, a keyboard or an game controller
This video from Ars sold me over

All that functionality without carrying any addon (cable, dock without adapter).
