Anyone have a link to what can be a good example of coil whine ? I think mY PSU is developing coil whine (noticed today a "buzzing noise" that i have pretty much isolated to the PSU)...

Also, is Coil Whine an appropriate/good reason for RMA? Its an Antec True-Power New 750w PSU

Plan on swapping in another PSU i've got to make sure its the PSU making the noise. wanted to get some opinions on it though (dont have time to swap in a new PSU for another day or two)

imagine a dog whining....

now imagine a robot dog whining...

kidding. check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeahtqeTrGo
a large percentage of the time it is the PSU making the noise when put under load
Just start an RMA with Antec and tell them how dissapointed you are that you received an annoying product.

ok very good to know that an RMA will most likely be an option. The PSU is definatly under load (folding with my 1090T at 4.0 right now)

Finally found a video that has a sound similar to mine-

not exactly, but similar, with short random bursts....it is not constant. I guess ill know for sure in the next day or so if it is my PSU or not :D since its in a case with 6 Yate Loons at full speed, its hard to tell exactly where it is coming from

I seem to also have a power supply issue going on. I thought it was my video card until I got a stethoscope and looked over my rig to isolate the sound while it was running the Heaven benchmark and also when playing BFBC2 to see if there was any difference in where the noises were coming from. I stopped the fans on the PSU to see if they were acting up from dirt and dust and the noise didn't stop. The video card makes a surging noise on the exiting of a game as the "zipper noise" stops on anything gpu dependent basically. I also noticed there is a hesitation in Heaven that wasn't there before and the noise stops as the hesitation kicks in and then when it gets going again it starts the noises as well. Here lately The noise has gotten so bad it wakes my wife up from across the bedroom (I got ear phones on so...) and she always assumes it is the speakers humming from static, but they aren't on. I am currently running an ABS Tagan ITZ 700w that is like 4 years old. and it never did this in the past before I recycled it from a free nas server to replace my other one that just died out of the blue. (Thermaltake 800w)

Sorry to dig this up but i have a question regarding coil whine and didn't want to create a whole thread for it.

I have an OCZ ZX1000 that whines when loading the graphics card by playing a demanding game. Idle and general desktop use i can't hear it at all.
My question is: Can coil whine damage the PSU or other components connected? Or is it literally just the vibration of the coil/s becoming audible by human ears as more current is put through?

Thanks for your reply :)

No.

More or less, although it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with more current.

Well, in a sense, just makes it worse i mean.
Idle - general usage = no whine
Medium = Very quiet squeal can be heard listening to the PSU with the side panel off the case
Kombustor/Furmark/IBT = Loud lower pitch whine
