Dead Island - Best Open World Zombie Game Ever?

I am really looking forward to this, but they need to clean up the HUD....get rid of the numbers when striking zombies...this isn't COD...I think a notification system similar to Dead Space 2 would work well here....keep the notifications and options to the outter most edges of the screen...that means everything, open door/cabinet operations, damage/perk status counters, ect...

I also see some collision issues....that is an absolutely fatal flaw if they can't get this figured out, as moving to make zombies collide into each other and bunch up is a huge part of games like this...see Killing Floor or L4D*...The zombies seem to be running right through each other...

Yeah I was skeptical too, in fact I waited to hear positive feedback from those who preordered Deus Ex through them before I took any chances.

Dumb question: http://www.greenmangaming.com/about/

When I look at that I'm wondering how it is/why you buy a game through this and these guys send you a Steam code, for example. That looks and reads like they are their own entity.

How's that work? I'm not fully clear on some of this.

I had no issues with the Deus Ex preorder through them. The key didn't count as a pre-order though, apparently. No Pre-order items for me :(

I pre-ordered on Amazon for release date-delivery for the X360. Amazon Prime FTW!

It strikes me as odd that they can sell Steam activation codes for less money than Steam charges for them.

I have bought a few things from them. The keys are retail. Just be aware that some titles might use capsule, which is their loader. I picked up from dust expecting steam and was disappointed.

They arent selling Steam activation codes, they are just another digital distibution store like Steam or any of the others. They have there own program called capsule that they use. However some games they are selling are steamworks games which means you need to have steam to be able to play them. Dead Island is one of those games so when you buy it from GMG they send you a code that you enter in steam to activate it. Its no different than if you went to a B&M store and got Dead Island there. So basicly when you buy a game like this from GMG Steam treats it as if you got a retail copy.

Does anyone know if you can get dead island on gmg for 34 still? I've tried a couple coupons and brings me to a 404 page after applying it. Not sure If I'm using the right code

PM me if you are a new customer and want $5 store credit.

The only digital store with DXHR items was Amazon. Steam only offered TF2 items if you preordered through them, which is no different than any other distributor paying for preorder exclusives.

The reason Steam offers TF2 items as an incentive is because it is the most cost effective promotional method for them. They are one of the highest volume distributors (and the highest digitally), meaning they stand to the lose the most revenue if they offered a per unit discount. They also don't have to rely on paying the developer for exclusive content (compared to say Gamestop). Higher volume distributors benefit more from a fixed cost type promotion, than a variable one based on the amount of units sold.

It strikes me as odd that they can sell Steam activation codes for less money than Steam charges for them.

That's what I'm wondering about, too.

Basically how things work is the publisher will set price guide lines, but they are actually contracted to make only a certain amount per sale, the rest going to the distributor. What a distributor wishes to do with the revenue going to them is their business.

I just pre-ordered my copy from GMG - $33.94, I hope it is worth it! Might be able to still get the ripper unlock because I pre-ordered the DE copy of RO2 via GMG and after activating the key I still received my TF2 hats, despite that being a steam pre-order bonus.

There's nothing survival about being hit by a bunch of zombies 10 times and still being able to walk. This is what I saw in the videos.
Slow, unmaneuverable players that can take a lot of hits could be a new genre:
Tank Horror

I'm thinking about it...some of the videos I've seen make it look kinda consolized, but for $34 on day one with free DLC later for an open-world zombie co-op game...Not sure I can resist, lol.

This sudden surge in interest for this game is getting me interested again. Although I already have RO2 coming a week later hmmm...

Yeah, I just bit the bullet and pre-ordered. Hopefully the game turns out decent! It looks pretty good based on videos.

My first order from GMG. Couldn't resist paying only €24.55 from Germany...hopefully it's good.

god damn it, why did they make a cool immersive game like this, and then break it with a ridiculous amount of invasive HUD crap...

I'm not sure how many more zombie games we need but this has some promise.

It's not like there's a plethora of GOOD zombie games around. There's a lot of WW2 games as well, but very few good ones, IMO. That's why we always need more.

Are there any good, lengthy gameplay vids that have been shown recently? I'm really on the fence about this game, I need to see some unbiased, straight up gameplay before I decide... And not "developer walkthroughs", those always strive their best to show only the good parts of the game.

edit: NM, the links Q-BZ posted are pretty helpful. Game looks kind of... meh. Looks like it would get very repetitive quickly.

At the end of the day it's either a good game or a bad game.

For example:
I really don't give a damn about vampires but Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is a fantastic game that I've played several times and pimp and whore around here any chance I get.

This seems to have the hallmarks of being at least a decent game based on what I'm seeing, especially in that youtube video I put up earlier in the thread.

With two Left 4 Dead games and Killing Floor, though, this thing's got tough acts to follow IMO and those three games have been enough zombie killing for me but if this game is really that good then it won't matter. I'll buy it. ;)

We'll see.

Kind of how I felt about it, too.

I bought it due to the GMG deal and the hope for mods to really make it shine.

Did they confirm that there will be mod capability for this?

The only problem as I see it, is that it comes out at the same time as Space Marine, and due to budget constraints, I'm allowed one game a month.

This month is Space Marine due to WH40K being the most awesome universe ever and Relic having a perfect record with me games wise. They are all awesome.
Next is F1 2011 (or dead island, depending on reviews, but I loved f1 2010 and still play it)
Nov is Skyrim, period, and I'm taking some extra time off to play it too.

I'm unsure how to take it - the video previews seem to be completely at odds with the descriptions of the game. I'll probably give it a shot, but it seems that they made what is possibly the most unlikable set of player characters in recent history. An aboriginal female police officer, Mildly Sexy Chinese Girl With Knives, washed up thugged out rapper, washed up pro American football player character archetypes define the classes, and each seems to either be a stereotype, or virtually screaming how in opposition they are to the stereotype. Many have postulated that they're going for the SUPER DIVERSITY pat on the back from the more sensitive critics, and its beginning to look that way as nothing I've seen so far seems to say "We're making an unconventional set of deep, meaningful characterizations that bring a new aspect to the story"

Affirmative action even in zombie games?

About the free pre-order dlc Bloodbath,

Bloodbath Arena DLC

4 deadly and hazardous Arenas with endless waves of zombies
Play in single or co-op multiplayer!
Loot XP and items and bring them over into your campaign
Leaderboard to challenge your friends
New gruesome weapon: Sonic Pulse Grenade

Who thinks this will be like the COD zombie mode? Or will it just be gladiator style in a small arena where we have to defeat ever increasing waves of enemies?

More likely than you think. A huge percentage of Resident Evil 5's publicity ended up being the "RACIST!", "Its not racist and here's why", "Racist or not, we're here to sum up what the other guys say and link to what is sure to be a constructive Facebook-based conversation", teams.

Hell, even Deus Ex: HR has some critic lighting up the blogosphere and game journalism sites because he decided the one minor drifter character who apparently speaks with a Southern accent is an evil minstrel show racism icon.

Zombie games especially seem to bring down racism in recent years - take for instance the L4D and L4D2 crews which each had a spark in the media, and even Dead Rising 2 caught flak for one of the major enemies being black while the good guy was white (forgetting about how many survivors you rescue of all different races, of course).

How have Techland been when it comes to stuff like changing FOV, graphics settings, moddability etc. in their previous PC games?
