How detailed do universal remotes get?

I no longer have the original remote for my Denon AVR-1602 A/V receiver and I'd like to start using it again.

Would a universal remote be able to replicate every button of the original remote?

I'm looking at the Logitech Harmony remotes and apparently all you do is download a config from Logitech for the specific device you want to control. My receiver is listed as being supported.

Get yourself a logitech harmony 300 if you havent already, it should be pre programmed for your reciever and if not i can be taught. With a bit of work you can have it dialed in better than your original remote.

That receiver should be in there. I've got a circa 10 year old Denon (AVR-1803) that works fine with my harmonys. Basically all of the buttons that aren't directly mapped to a key will be accessible through the remote's screen. You'll just have to page through them if you need to access any oddball ones.

Since you also configure the sequences for activities (i.e. for TV watching, receiver goes to XYZ input, TV to ABC, etc), i really don't do anything with the receiver other than volume up/down as the rest is set through the activity change.

great thing about logitech remotes is that someone else in the world probably has that avr and has a harmony and has uploaded any missing commands into logitechs database.

If you are going to invest in a logitech remote, consider spending a few bucks more and investing in one of their higher end models. The 300 is one of the most basic remotes and does not have a few of the advanced features. I have the 300 in addition to the harmony One, 1000 and 670 and one thing that annoys the heck out of me with the 300 is the delay between key presses. If you are going to use this remote for your AVR, this is going to be very noticeable and irritable especially when you are increasing/decreasing volume.

Usage of the remote would be quite limited. I only want to use it for PC gaming really. Problem is that I need a remote to do some of the setup functions that can only be done with a remote. Also some of the buttons on the unit are wigging out on me.

I don't think delay in button response would be a big deal. The unit would be within arms reach to adjust volume or change inputs.

If you get the Harmony, submit a tech support request to have BatPig's profile copied to yours for the Denon. His config has all the Denon commands in it.

Just got back from Target with my new Harmony 600.

This bitch was pretty much ready to rock once I put in my receiver. This thing is pretty sweet!

Glad I went with the LCD screen.
