"you dont get a key

the beta is tied to your account the moment you get accepted assuming you choose to opt in or out of the beta."

This is correct. You get an email and you follow a link that has two options, opt in or opt out. I chose opt in, and then it asks you to log in to dl the game client. Once you log in, you dl a 100mb patcher and follow the instructions from there, you also have access to the game testing forums from that point. Anyway, I'm writing this from my phone at work and all I can think about is heading home to play some more! Unfrtunately I have some errands to run after work and then I have to lead my guild's hm FL raid when I get home >.< I guess I'll just have to give up on sleeping tonight so I can get some more SWTOR gameplay in haha!

SWTOR launch date hinges on fan beta reaction
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/swtor-launch-date-hinges-on-fan-beta-reaction/

The latest release-related blurb comes courtesy of EA bigwig Frank Gibeau, who told CVG that while EA-BioWare does have a date in mind, fan reaction to the beta will ultimately tell the tale.

"It [the launch date] is definitely tied to the beta test feedback that's ongoing and so far, so good. We feel good about the date that we're heading towards but you're right, you could have a Crazy Ivan show up in the September/October beta test and be like, 'wow, I've got to fix that,'" Gibeau said.

Out of curiosity, what was the email address it was sent from? Need to check the Spam Filter :D

i feel like something is jacked up with their emails right now i was creating an account for my wife and got no emails from swtor about verifying the email addy or anything .....

I wouldn't worry about it all that much.

It's just WoW, in the star wars universe.

Basically, if you like WoW, but crave for light sabers... Play SWTOR.

Simple as that.

Everything plays the same, LOOKS the same(graphics are shit in SWTOR), talks the same... yadda yadda.

Boring as hell for someone not into Star Wars lol.

I've been hearing a lot about it playing like WoW, but looking like WoW? Get your eyes checked ;)

And who the fuck would play this if they didn't like Star Wars?

Except of all the beta reports, interviews from testers, etc it point sto the fact that the game is really nothing new, it's very much the "Same old same old" mmo formula with Star Wars.

Main difference is the single player like story system with choices and companions. Apart from this, many testers say you shouldn't expecting anything new, or revolutionary to the genre.

The only thing 'new and revolutionary' is the fact that they're going to be charging a sub for what is essentially a single player or small group game - Kotor3, masquerading as a MMO. They're counting on people re-rolling alts for every single class so they don't get burned out in 2 months when there's nothing but CTfla... er Huttball and Arathi Bas... er Alderan to play.

You don't have to hate on the game, but you also don't have to be so delusional as to believe this is the messiah of the industry that's going to revolutionize everything.

I don't think anyone's been that delusional with their expectations. Nobody has said this would revolutionize anything. At all.

It's just another Bioware game we can expect to have a great storyline, with great gameplay. And from beta reports, I've heard it has both.

Not a single person in this thread has ever said that they thought it's going to revolutionize the industry and turn multiplayer PC gaming on its head. Just some people (including me) that feel the game will still be lots of FUN regardless of its similarities to the king of MMOs, WoW.

That being said, isn't saying that "it's exactly like WoW, just with an in-depth single player style story and dialogue system" kind of an oxymoron? WoW has NOTHING resembling an engrossing RPG story, yet it constantly gets stated that it's "exactly the same thing with different class names and new zones."

And now cue someone who says that dialogue and story is absolutely pointless and everyone will just clickspam through every single quest, ignoring all of it.

Still awaiting my beta key... c'mon Bioware, you can do eeeet!

Here is a question, just how "revolutionary" are the new FPS games that are hitting the market or how "revolutionary" are the new RTS games hitting the market? At this point in time winning formulas have been discovered already. It makes sense to emulate what has succeeded because those successes are due to the fact that players enjoyed playing those games.

When SWG came out about 30 people I knew from real life, actual friends and acquaintances, formed a Rebel guild. We accomplished all there was to accomplish early on, the end-game was severally lacking. Many of those friends and acquaintances were lucky enough to get into the WoW Beta around that same time. Although the beta's level cap was below 60 blocking out truly end-game content, it was still abundantly clear that based on game play alone WoW was going to end up having a far greater draw than SWG.

Over the years I have come to love World of Warcraft, it has some amazing game play. Star Wars, however, is just so much more of an epic idea than, "Orcs and Humans." Star Wars is beloved by so many people because it is such an amazing adventure, such an amazing universe. Most people living in the first world would be able to form the correct mental picture if "Darth Vader" came up in a conversation. Try bringing up "Death Wing" with those same people and you'd most likely only succeed in drawing up a blank stare.

Fact is, I believe WoW will only end it's reign over the MMO industry when Blizzard decides to change their primary focus away from this, their first MMO. However, knowing I love leading raids, and knowing I love Star Wars, and, also knowing that there is a real chance WoW's next expansion will be "Mists of Pandaria," I am extremely grateful that I will at least have the opportunity to raid in the setting of Star Wars, as opposed to... Panda-land?

I've played in all the popular MMO betas, and none have drawn me in like SWTOR has. Of course, I just got in, and I'm only level 12 though. I love the atmopshere of the game and reminds me of SWG. I woke up this morning and my first thought was 'swtor', and that hasn't happened with any other beta.

Now I've only played the Imperial Agent, but so far the story is great and so is the class gameplay. Admittedly sometimes the talking is just sort of lame when you're doing side-quests, but that's with any Bioware game, and it's definitely a plus if it makes you feel more immersed.

I'm glad I preordered this game. I was a bit worried because all the gameplay videos I watched are super boring, but I think this will hold me over until GW2 comes out.

Kind of annoying seeing the haters repeat the same thing thats been repeated since swtor was first announced yrs ago.

What's hating about reporting what many beta testers themselves have reported?

There are people that still think/want it to be some revolutionary step up from most mmo games, it isn't, that's just the truth, not hating.

If you get bored or want to move on, i would LOVE to try the beta and share the account with you.. im not a skeezer, and ill hook u up with www.pathofexile.com beta key

Maybe I'm outgrowing MMO's, but the beta isn't thrilling me. It's pretty fun, but I generally only log in (after playing casually for a few weeks) when there is *NOTHING ELSE* to do.

The classes feel very... generic. The voice acting is nice, but I don't think it's going to be appreciated as much as they hope it will - it was a massive undertaking, but personally I wish they had spent that time and money on fleshing out the classes/characters, and maybe only voice acting the 'main' storyline - rather than every random tiny encounter. The convo options, while giving a nice bit of flavor, will not impact your game like they do in say... Mass Effect.

Also, it's Star Wars, which is going to attract a lot of hardcore nerds (me?) and the "RP" options are very limited - no sitting in chairs or anything, etc.

But see, FPS games are fun to just play (multplayer, that is). MMOs are not fun to just play. You never say to yourself, "hey, I think I'll go kill some mobs for no reason at all," or "hey, I think I'll go do some of this terribly unfun PVP." MMOs are a commitment. They are about setting goals and working towards them. They are fun when you are leveling a character or progressing through a dungeon, but that's just a single player game in disguise, and after that you're simply working towards a goal. Get this item, kill this boss over and over, wait for the next content patch.

People play MMOs for a sense of progression. Once the progression stops (or slows to a crawl), ask yourself why you keep playing the game. No, seriously. There is no fun to be had from killing the same boss for the 18th time. There is no fun to leveling a character through the same path of quests for the 5th time. The core gameplay of an MMO is shallow and boring. There is only so much skill that can be plumbed out of pressing a sequence of buttons. Reflexes don't matter. Battle sense doesn't matter. Knowing the maps, how to utilize advanced movement techniques, aiming with a mouse (which is an INCREDIBLY deep skill) these are all aspects of FPS games that make the gameplay deep and interesting even for the thousandth time playing them.

I do have to admit, I hate leveling, I hate quests, I don't care for the voice acting... It just makes it seem more tedious at this point. So far, every new quest I have been constantly choosing the option that I think is going to get the quest giver to SHUT UP so I can just go SHOOT AT THINGS, but even though I'm choosing options like, "Ok, that sounds easy I don't really need to know anything else, bye!" The quest giver continues to flap his mouth in my direction and I have to sit through it all anyway. This aspect is kind of annoying.

learn to use the spacebar if you dont like listening to dialogue.

It's a Bioware game. Were you really expecting anything else?

A good MMO is fun. Yes the leveling and progression are quote fun, but a good MMO offers a variety of end game content. DAoC is a prime example of this. Their end game was top notch. 3 realm pvp, castle sieges, relic keep sieges, outdoor raid mobs, open world pvp, pvp rankings, deep crafting, awesome roleplaying, and a plethora of other things to do. A good MMO doesn't have to be all about gear or raids to keep one entertained and focused. It is somewhat sad to see modern MMO's with such a focus on gear instead of gameplay. I for one hope SW:ToR doesn't fall into this trap or mindset.

Sounds like you aren't having fun when you are ready for me to take the beta off your hands let me know!! ;)

I think my favorite part of DAoC was looking forward to going to darkness falls :) I mean here you had a crazy high level instance entrance in a low level zone and if your side was controlling it you could just walk right in, no attunement or long quest chain, just a group of people that were high enough level.
I totally agree that nowadays its all bout gear and who has the biggest epeen, and not focusing on a group/guild achievement but individual leetness and who can have the shiniest armor.

DF pvp was glorious. Had so much fun in there. I wish warhammer could have recaptured some of the DAoC magic. Can't believe mythic failed so hard on WHO. :(

This on all accounts. Many fond memories of DF diamond seal farming and then when DF flipped facing off against the hoard of incoming. Then, when it looked like things were going bad, logging off for 10 minutes or so and then logging back in to gank.

Except that it's a more immersive experience than WoW. How many days/weeks/months of dialogue does TOR have? Almost everything is fully voiced and interactive a la KOTOR and Mass Effect. There a few moments where TOR transcends the feeling of just being a game, which is more than I can say for WoW. Combat is very similar, but everything else couldn't be further apart.

Of course, it's not perfect. At times, I feel like an errand boy sifting through a sea of NPCs asking me for favors. This much is incredibly tedious.. BioWare needs to churn out some more interesting content for those of us who solo a lot; I'm tired of fetch quests, kill X number of womp rats, activate X interactive objects, etc. The game is at its best with the heroic quests and seriously needs more flashpoints like Black Talon and Eternity Vault.

I'm not one for PvP, so I can't comment on that end.

People enjoy different things, that's one of the reasons there are so many different types of games. Personally I obtain a tremendous sense of satisfaction from leading others to triumph over what are in essence complex puzzles.

Splinter24, whether or not it is a Biowear game, that does not change what i find enjoyable versus what I find mundane. I have always foung single player games mundane, I have always enjoyed being part of a team, and leading a team towards accomplishing certain objectives.

He wasn't saying that it should change what you find enjoyable in gaming - it's just Bioware has been known (exclusively, in fact) for making RPGs with a lot of dialogue speech and text, so it should be expected from another one of their games.

The SP elements are nice, but they will be of no interest to the typical WoW player, they are not old school RPG fans. Bioware is trying to appease both sides and will only have the manpower to satisfy both genres for a short time. The game will have massive initial sales but the hardcore kiddies who chew through content will not find end game satisfying or challenging enough.

OK, except the "typical WoW player" is NOT the player that raids for hours every night and chews up all the new content in patches in a week. Those are the hardcore crowd, and yes, they are very difficult to please with a new MMO launch.

The vast majority of WoW players are actually the more casual, raid once a week, do some PvP here and there, play with friends on the weekends type of gamer. These players may STILL run into lack of endgame content in SWTOR (we won't know until the game is out) but one thing's for sure, they won't be blasting through all the content in hours like you're saying.

I do get what you're saying as far as splitting the man power and focus though, I do think that might hurt the game in the end. We will see.
