Hi,

I built a HTPC for my sister a while ago and although she has the bundled remote that came with the Hauppauge HVR-2250, she cannot use it the way she want to. In fact, she needs a remote with a "knob" that she could use to move the pointer just like a regular mouse. She has mobility problem (and she annoys me a bit to find a solution haha) so that's the reason why she needs this. My iMon remote that came bundled with my silverstone case could do that.

Before I try my remote, do you know if the infrared receiver of the HVR-2250 will capt the signal from a different remote?

Did the Hauppauge come with a external USB IR receiver or are you using an IR receiver that plugs in to the hauppauge card via a small 1/8" jack kinda like a heaphone jack?

If it is a external USB IR receiver chances are it was a Media Center remote bundle (usually the remote has a green media center button on it). The only official thing I know of that would have something that might work is the windows media center IR keyboard which has a small nub type mouse on it.... although it doesnt work extremely well it does get the job done.

If it is the IR cable with 1/8" jack then it is the crappy hauppauge remote, and as far as I know nothing is availble.

More than likely you would have to buy another rmeote kit, or if the rmeote works fine for most of what you need it for you can get a seperate device for pointing. I would reccomend the Gyration Media Center remotes but if she has mobility problems (excuse me if I interpret this wrong but I take thta as she possibly has some fine motor skill problems) the gyration wouldnt work well. The gyration remotes combine a media center remote with universal rmeote capabilities and has a gyrosopic sensor for moving the mouse pointer around.

If the remote you have you think might be good for her chances are you can find a kit for it, or if again the included remote works well but you want more pointer functionality Tigerdirect and others occasionally have the Lenovo Media Remote on sale for $25 it is a nice small keyboard with a trackball built in and is very comfortable to grip. For what it is it works extremely well and is very precise (compared to the dozens of remotes with built in pointers I have tried over the years).

hope this helps somewhat

Yes, it really helps me. Thanks!.

It is the 1/8" jack at the back of the hauppauge card. It works well, but limited a bit. In fact, my sister suffers from "fybromialgy".. Not sure about exact word in english. Basically, she cannot move her arms much, it is like "gripped" if you wish. I suggested her the trackball kind of stuff and she said that it would hurt her too. She only wants a remote to limit the movement of her arms even though I told her it is not very convenient and quite slow to use the remote as a mouse (I tried it myself with my silverstone case).

I will check the gyration you are talking about. Maybe I can find something better for her needs even if she is stubborn using a remote.

Thanks,

Serge

yeah as I said the gyration definiately would not be good in her case, you have to move your wrist and or arm a lot to move the mouse cursor.

the lenovo would be just like the remote your speaking of but a much more comfortable hold in the hand with more precision, and all she would have to do is move her thumb:

right now they dont have the open boxes for $25 though, but they can be had elsewhere cheaper. The range is good on them and they just work great. My only complaint is it isnt backlit.
