GameStop Pulling OnLive Coupons Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The last time I bought a retail game at a store, which was years back, I thought it was common practice not to have the CD's in the cases to counter shoplifting. Took the box to the counter, and they dropped the CD in and put a sticker on it.

Pretty sure that's how to they did it at Babbages and the like back in the day.

Generally retailers only do this for Console games that they leave with a empty case on display. Either that or they store the Console games behind a glass door which is locked and you need to have help to get.

PC Games have pretty much always been out in the open, mainly due to the fact that their box is generally larger than Console Games so it's a bit harder to sneak them out of stores, not to mention it's a lot harder to open a PC Game up in a store without being caught as well, since with a Console Game you just open it up, take the CD out, put the case back, and they can't really tell without paying extra special attention.

Never used GameStop, I bought mine on Green Man Gaming for $40 which is a nice deal, $10 slashed, would have cost me $50, so GameStop can go die.

Kind of surprised at all the outrage.

If someone I was doing business with tried to get me to promote my competitor I would have none of it myself.

Not saying they should be opening games. They should have just shipped them back and asked for SKU's that did not have the coupon but...I understand.

Update: GameStop has stopped selling physical copies of the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution until it receives a new version from Square Enix without the OnLive coupon included

they also stated that while the new products may be opened, we fully guarantee the condition of the discs to be new. If you find this to not be the case, please contact the store where the game was purchased and they will further assist

I pre-ordered the game through GameStop because of the exclusive single player mission...my copy arrived today but I need to get home to pick it up...I don't really care about the OnLive coupon but it's the principle that they opened my 'new' retail box that I don't like

They've been opening games and selling them as new for years.

Stop shopping there people. It is a horrible company.

If I was Square Enix, I would cut Game Stop off. This is one of those games you can do that with and get away with it. "Oh, Game Stop does not have it?, well crap off I go to BB, Target, Walmart, or the like."

Kind of like BF3 and the EA / Steam train wreck. Well, except Steam is not a pile of shit like Game Stop is, and as such, actually has something of a loyal customer base.

Dont cut em off completely. Just don't agree to provide them with preorder DLC! :D

Preorder DLC is another thing I could rage over.

This sums it up nicely.

I do not consider this progress.

Wow thats really scummy.

They stopped selling it because it has a competitors card inside the box. So instead of people getting home and it not working, then complaining it was Gamestop's fault, they simply just removed it, but now they stopped the process completely. Nothing shady going on, just the same people who hate gamestop complaining about the same shiznit they always do. I don't work for them, i don't buy their magazine and happy i can find a copy for the game i want. I open the game at the store, and if i see a scratch, i ask for another copy and they give me one. It's your money, and if you don't like the way they do something then move to another store, or simply ask them for another copy if you don't get a sealed one.

The printout in the article says "Regular PC versions." Did the Augmented Edition have these codes too? And if so, did GameStop remove them from online-ordered copies before shipping?

if you don't like the way they do something then move to another store

not really possible with this game as GameStop is the only store offering the Explosive Mission pack which contains an exclusive single player level along with some extra weapons

So? I pre-ordered my copy online without a single care about the exclusive shit. I highly doubt the extra mission matters at all and if it's that big of a deal they'll offer it as DLC later and maybe I'll care about it then.

Pretty much the worst kind of DLC out there, forcing gamer who wants it to buy from a shitty retail store by making said DLC exclusive to them:mad:

this is nothing new with their open box policy. Just taking shit out is straight illegal.

what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

don't see how they can take issue with you redeeming your mission code and returning the game "new" so long as it's unplayed.

some people do care about the extra mission...difference being that any DLC will most likely not be free...GameStop is offering the bonus mission for the same price as the standard edition

It only cost the same price if you limited yourself to stores that sold the game at MSRP. Since it was a Steamworks game, purchase location didn't matter. You could have picked up copies about $20 (and no tax) cheaper going through other outlets.

Gamestop prices suck, their trinkets don't make up for it.

I just picked up the game from my mailbox...the OnLive card and Promo code were included in the packaging...so it looks like I got one of the early copies that were not opened before the recall...the game box cover art looks pretty sleak...will install it tonight

Was there any label on the box advertising the OnLive coupon?

no, just a OnLive postcard slipped next to the game manual...I think the reason I got the OnLive card was because I bought it from the GameStop website and had it delivered...I think the recall only affected those that bought it in-store, where the clerks could open up the box and remove it...don't think they did that in the factory itself

If the publishers themselves are including the coupon, and Gamestop is removing them,it amounts to product tampering. At the least, customers should be allowed to return the game for a full refund. If this isn't against the law,it should be.

No, they're offering it for the same price as the standard edition minus the free OnLive copy of the game.

That's not "free".

Still not as bad as the time Square Enix decieved and stole from me by charging me $60 for Final Fantasy 14 Online. I stopped playing after 3 days because of the absolute piece of broken shit that it was. The only thing I ever got from Square was multiple emails apologizing for how crappy the game was.

I appreciate what Square did in the past, but that was a pretty bad burn.

Best buy is very infamous for doing this with laptops and other computers. They toss on their geekbloatware repackage and sell it to you as if you bought a new computer, not to mention if they have an discount, that only applies to unopened computer boxes because they consider what they did as a premium service.

Yeah, I miss Computer City (it was a CompUSA type store without all the added fluff.) While in their store once I watched a guy buy a new computer and take it out to his car, where he met up with his wife, and the she marched the poor guy back into the store with the rig still in it's sealed box and had him return it (we actually saw this through the windows, I really felt bad for the guy.)

As I was looking at a similar, but lesser equiped system the tech told me that if I could wait an hour he'd sell me the one just returned for the same price as the one I was looking at. The reason for the wait was that they took the box to their system build area, opened it up and inspected and tested the rig to make sure their weren't any issues (I watched the whole thing as their work area was enclosed in glass.)

Come to find out company policy was that ANY system which had the box opened, or had been sold had to be fully inspected and sold as an "open box" special. It knocked the price from $2500 to $2k on the tower and also reduced the price on the monitor 25%.

You don't find service like that anymore. :(

I could see them shipping it back, but removing something is, or should be, illegal.

If EA includes some DLC free with the initial shipment of BF3, but GameStop is also selling that same package should they be allowed to open each game and remove the code so as to not have it compete with their DLC sales?

I understand gamestop's POV but you can't tamper with a game like that.. That's wrong. It was also wrong of squareenix to send a coupon for a competitor in a box. And its stupid of them to support OnLive as well..

I saw no apology there, just Square Enix taking it like a bitch. But hey, it's a free country, anyone can sensationalize a bit here and there. I certainly do.

I suppose my earlier idea of Square Enix, just telling Game Stop to f*** off, was hasty. As far as PC game sales go, Game Stop is not really relevant, and the shrinking number of PC gamers that had not already just purchased it at an on line retailer, or through a DD service, would go elsewhere to get the game with little more than a, "gee this sucks", as they go off to another retailer.

But for the console games, and gamers, with their two week, make it or break it, attention span, I can see why Square Enix might take the bitch route.

So...uh...where's my OnLive coupon? I bought through Steam, and I don't think I have it...

It would seem that GameStop is no longer removing the free game coupons from retail copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Instead, the company has ordered its store managers to simply pull the game from its shelves altogether. :(

While Square-Enix may "respect" the decision of Gamestop, I'm sure OnLive who more than likely didn't get their advertising put in the box just because Square_Enix felt like doing something nice and free, might have some words.

Then again, it could be that they did put it in for free as SE benefits from "free stuff" and OnLive gets the word out...

Either way it's a huge cluster fuck, and really shows the direction gaming is going. EA with their "FUCK STEAM THEY SUCK BALLZ YO!!!" statement, now GameStop, with a "sometime in the future, we don't know when, we're going to get a similar type of service, because it seems people like Steam and we want to cash in on that type of thing too, so we can't possibly advertise for anyone else for something we might do in the future" type of policy

I'm so happy that video game industry is being so hostile to each other. And us, the consumers, are the ones who lose out the most. The children of a marriage gone wrong.

Few rumors going around right now that Gamestop in the near future might be refusing the sale of any PC games that require Steam like services, this includes games from Blizzard that have battle.net etc

I'm just quoting what I heard on PA forums and on 4chan, so right now its just speculative rumors, but if this is the case and gamestop starts pulling games that offer any online services other then theirs, it could be the end of PC gaming through Gamestop

Gamestop bought out Impulse, which is already a very good game distribution software with more lax DRM than Steam, a more indie kind of selection, and was made by the guys behind Galactic Civilization. I think you mean that they're looking into an OnLive kind of system.

Honestly, I don't care much about the open box policy of 'new' games at Gamestop as long as the game is in perfect working order. Not all copies of the games get opened (that is, with this glaring exception), only the display version of the game. If that's all they have left, just the displays, then make the decision if you're ok with that. It's easy to steal games because of their small size, so they don't put them out on the shelves. I understand that. Not giving you everything you are entitled to is an entirely different matter, though.
