Official Deus Ex: Human Revolution thread

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind using horribly compressed low quality video for the cutscenes? In this day and age is there a reason they wouldn't use at LEAST 720p video?

It's just a bit jarring when you watched those sweet CGI trailers leading up to the game, and then in-game you get these cutscenes that look like they were from a camrip or something, all pixely, etc.

I can understand for storage reasons on a console, but on the pc? Why not have the option to use HD video?

anyone else have to laugh at the way that black swat dudes head moved around when he talked before the first mission?

Quick question - is there any way to play the game *entirely* non-lethal?

I managed to do that in DX1 (at least, I didn't kill anyone - although two people did die in my presence and as a result of my actions, but it was their own weapons that killed them...technically...), and it was massively challenging (and, thus, really rewarding)!

Doesn't seem possible, here. At least, in the intro bits. I don't see any way to switch out from the gun you have to something non-lethal, and there do not appear to be any 'takedown' prompts even when perfectly positioned.

The "Q" button is for take downs (default). Hold it for a lethal take down.

Yes. During the intro segments where you don't have takedowns yet, you simply have to avoid the guards.

In fact, you get bonus XP in missions if you don't kill anyone.

Yeah - this.

As for mouse issues: Someone on the eidos forums mentioned mouse movement will be patched. Also turning down SSAO helped. SOME.

I'm half regretting picking the Give Me Deus Ex option. I love the challenge, but I'm trying to record a LP while dealing with the challenge and trying very very hard not to swear at my own stupid mistakes. I will say one thing about the difficulty level though, I've never felt like any death is due to the game being cheap so any problems have always felt like my own fault. I wish the other game I'm trying to LP was the same (Dungeon Siege 3).

DXHR actually gives a lot more options to go non lethal compared to DX1.

It is possible to sneak by the guards in the intro, you just need to be a bit patient and wait for them to move.

I mentioned this a bit earlier, but it isn't really due to consoles, but more the 360 specifically. Each additional DVD for a xbox 360 game has much higher licensing costs. Some crossplatform PS3 and 360 games for instance have much higher quality prerendered video due to the additional size of Bluray. I guess on the PC as well, each additional DVD would also have a minor cost addon.

The xutscene quality is sad really.

What does LP mean?

After posting the message below I found on the Eidos Deus Ex forums that a lot of nvidia users were experiencing the same issue. An Eidos admin posted that...
This could be an issue in the new drivers from nVidia, it was not an issue in the previous drivers.. We're looking into it..
so I went ahead and started trying older nvidia drivers from 28.66 backwards.

All in all i tried the following drivers:

280.26-desktop-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql (August 9, 2011)
275.33-desktop-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql (June 1, 2011)
270.61-desktop-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql (April 18, 2011)
266.58_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql (January 18, 2011)
263.09_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql2 (December 7, 2010)

I ran CCleaner after each driver uninstall and before each driver reinstall then proceeded to test Deus Ex Human Revolution with tessellation on. In each (driver) instance the graphical anomalies were present. I can't help but call BS on the Eidos claim that the issue didn't exist in "previous" drivers, as this claim does not line up with my own testing.

At this point I'm not sure who's as fault here (who I should be looking to for a solution) but I feel severely let down by tessallation in DE:HR.

Original post:
Seems like tessellation is causing strange graphics anomalies for me:

Without Tessellation

With Tessellation

With Tessellation Zoomed

Tried updating to latest nvidia drivers. At first I thought it was gfx anomalies due to overclocking, so no OC on my video or CPU.

The problem only shows up with Tessellation enabled. Very frustrating!!!

Edit: System:

2600k
P8P67 Deluxe
EVGA GTX 580

Sig line is old.

I love the game itself so far but I am getting so many freeze/crashes to desktop every time I enter a new area it's just killing the experience for me. I really need to stop pre-ordering games because they are almost always plagued with bugs that only punish those who buy the game at launch.... ridiculous.

Is the cutscene quality bad because they used BINK for compression? Besides that, this is one HELL of a game. Perhaps my GOTY

I have this same issue. Using twin gtx 480's.and 280.26 drivers

Did you OC your graphic card(s)? I underclocked mine with stock speeds using afterburner 2.2.0 beta 5. However, the problem still occurred when using stock voltages and speeds.

By the way, for those trying non lethal playthroughs, the tranquilizer rifle can actually kill people.

It's not related to OC at all. Process of elimination indicated tessellation as confirmed by Eidos.

Few hours in and no crashes or freezes yet...knock on wood. Double check your drivers or defrag the HDD for starters if you haven't already.

Possibly a dumb question, but so far I haven't seen how to configure the hot bar from the inventory screen?

Finally playing it now, its enjoyable, at least this game has a manual save feature unlike most shitty games today which only allows an autosave feature which is annoying. Hate having to start from a checkpoint instead where you last played.

Don't have any crashing issues on my machine, yet. Game runs perfect, though the graphic models look a bit off.

I just had my first crash. I took out the first guard in the very first mission (typhoon factory) and after I hid his body and rounded the corner the game froze and then crashed. This is on my laptop though (Asus G73JH, everything on except vsync, medium settings, DX11). I wont be able to try my eyefinity rig for a few months.

I keep crashing here. It's really frustrating. I tried to climb the boxes instead of rounding the corner adn it still happened. I've turned down AA to FXAA Low, texturing to Billenear, shadows and DOF to normal, SSAO is off, post-processing, auto aspect and tesselation are on, vsync and tripple buffering are off. I was getting well over 60FPS at 1920x1080 on DX11. I'm going to try turning DX11 off and see if that helps. Any ideas?

oh, another annoyance is the game doesn't save my extra mouse button binds after I quit the game.

Anyone know how to skip the dialouge if you've already read it? I want to play, not watch people's jerky head movements and speech.

This is bascially robocop

It just sometimes kills people, possibly a shot to the head has a chance to or depending on where it hits. I only noticed it by accident. When I back tracked a bit, turns out some other people I tranqed were dead as well.

So after reading lots of great press and hearing some enthusiastic reviews from friends, I bought this game on Steam.

First impression? "Man this game looks like it was made with the HL2 engine"

Seriously, am I the only person who sees this, or does this game look like butt for a game made in 2011? I know graphics aren't everything, but damn. I don't recall one mention of this anywhere in any of the reviews I read/heard of this game, professional or otherwise. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Playing at 1080p with all options maxed.

People here have mentioned it, but it doesn't really matter. The gameplay more than makes up for it. I have yet to even bother considering how good the game looks while playing it. I simply don't care when the game itself is so good.

Yeah, I mean I'll definitely play it through since I already dropped the 50 bucks on it, and maybe I'll end up eating my words, but it's not exactly a great first impression, nor a deterrent to the "try before you buy" attitude that some have. It's not just the appearance either, it FEELS like a game from that era. Punch-less weapons, gliding around on ice skates, etc.

Well the engine is from 2006 and that's probably about when they started development since it was announced in 07. Still it feels a lot like the original game which despite being ugly as hell these days (even with mods) is still really fun and playable.

Gameplay > Ponies > Graphics

Games with amazing graphics and shitty gameplay...are shitty games. And it seems almost intrinsic that games for which the developer focused on graphics did so at the cost of gameplay, or story.

Yes. The game FEELS like the original, making it a win in my book. I still play the first one. I still play Thief 2. I still play System Shock 2. Gameplay matters more.

Um, I think the game looks great. Don't know what you people are complaining about. Are you playing it fully maxed out? o_O

I am playing @ 1920x1200, FXAA High, All Effects Maxed, and it runs >60fps and looks good. It actually feels like a PC title, not a port.

Dunno if it is placebo or what, but diagonal walking(W+A or W+D) is faster than walking straight and just as fast as shift-sprinting.
