Dell U2412M

What's the brightness setting everyone use for this monitor U2412M ? default is at 75 seems too bright. Currently I set at 70.

Hey 10e could you possibly give me all your settings for the monitor so that I can copy yours.

Custom color mode with Red @ 96, Green @ 93, Blue @ 87

Brightness at 40 and contrast at 75. Sharpness at 40.

I'm pretty happy with these settings and the white point matches my NEC using these and colors are pretty close.

Is the glow in the corners a good enough reason to send it in for another one? I dont think i notice it when gaming but on dark backgrounds I do. I only really notice it in 2 corners.

Step back a bit and see if it's back light bleed or not. The white glow in the corners is typical of IPS panels but if you step back a foot or two and you only see it in one or two corners it's bleed.

Thanks man, you are the best!:D When I recieve mine I plan to go with your settings as a baseline.

Mine finally showed up. Very happy with it so far and thats coming from someone who went from a CRT to a 120hz display (2233rz) because I could not bear to play a game on a 60hz LCD w/ input lag and garbage refresh rates (prevalent when TN LCDs were first coming out, not anymore.). Never thought i'd ever be using a 60hz panel again, but I am going to go ahead and keep these.

U2412M is not suitable for gaming according to flatpanelsHD because of much overdrive trailing.

From the article:

"I compared U2412M to U2410 and saw that U2412M actually has less motion blurring that U2410 – mostly in the darker picture areas. On the other hand U2412M has slightly more overdrive trailing. Nothing serious, and nothing to worry about for most users, but I think that critical gamers might prefer the lower level of overdrive trailing on U2410."

Can't say I even noticed the overdrive trailing they speak of in games. I could see it slightly when I ran one side by side with my 120hz display in terms of moving the mouse cursor fast on a black background, but in games it felt perfectly normal, and I am usually very picky about that kind of stuff.

I've seen both side by side with a friend of mine. And while the U2412 is probably the best budget IPS 24 inch I would still take the U2410 over it...

I suppose, I don't see the need for the wide gamut, but the input lag on the U2410 rules it out for anyone half serious about gaming.

Ill take low input lag and very good colors, over high input lag & slightly better very good colors any day. The 6bit vs 8bit is really a non-issue for me, but everyone has different needs/wants.

I have also seen them both, just not side by side. I think each panel has their own purpose. I would likely take the U2412 for FPS/Gaming and the U2410 for Graphics Design/Video editing.

Ok now I'm measuring 1004:1 after calibration (121.4cd/m2 : 0.121cd/m2) , a slightly better result. Not really noticeable in the real world but nice to have it bump over 1000:1 :D

What colorimeter did you use? results any good ?

I just ordered! I appreciate everyone's input. They are the reason I bought this. Thanks a bunch everyone. Hopefully I can wait till the 18th

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks to everyone. i just ordered as well. props to 10e and LOLANG :)

I received mine last night thanks to Lolang's connect. Thanks to 10e and all others in this thread for all their hard work. I am very happy with the purchase.

This is kind of weird. The backlight bleeding on my two displays last night was getting less noticeable, I'd say the centre (worst) one was significantly down, and uniformity way up. There's still a spot on the left screen, which now seems to be the worst one. Unless I was seeing things though ... maybe a few days of good use helps bed it in??

I will check back tonight, was working on my 29er mountainbike most of last night. Put on new tubeless tyres myself for the first time, replaced the rear shifter (again for my first time), and new cassette & chain; lots of fun. ;)

Once before on this forum(IIRC), someone had a new display with really ridiculous backlight bleed and tech support actually told him to run the displays for a couple of days. After which was nearly normal. I should have kept a link because it was the most startling change I have ever seen.

But that was a CCFL display, not sure how that meshes with LED.

Interesting! I'll try to get a few more shots done tonight. The result may end up being of great interest.

I was having to look for the bleed last night; before, the bleed looked at me.

damn, this LOLANG discount doesn't work in Canada...I guess I will have to wait for a Dell rebate..

I am in Canada, and had an online chat with a sales rep from Dell.ca and I asked for a discount coupon.
There didn't seem to be one, but after a few minutes he came back and gave me a total price (tax & shipping) of $417 ca
ordered 6/8/2011
It will arrive tomorrow (Thurs 11th )according to a call from Purolator.

:):)

Was scratching my head about june 8th for a second...then it hit me.

I get mine in tomorrow too :)

i1D2. Results are very good. Not quite as accurate as the U2711 in terms of gamut but everything else is basically spot on.

Here are my charts after calibration (calibrated with i1Match, measured in HCFR). Note HCFR uses a more strict dE formula than dE94 which the review sites tend to use, so they are not comparable in that regard.

You might wonder why I have calibrated gamma to 2.4, that is because in a dim environment you need to use 2.4 in order to see the same image as 2.2 in a bright environment (due to human lightness function). For daytime I load a 2.2 calibration using Monitor Calibration Wizard as the LUT loader. This tool is very useful because it can enforce the calibration LUT when full screen games try to reset it.

Got my monitor today as well. I like the colors on it a lot using 10e's settings, however my panel seems to have some brightness uniformity issues where the top left corner is darker than the rest and I'm able to see the gradient. Will have to have it replaced, but assuming the replacement is fine and dandy I might just order a second! :)

Thanks for actually quoting the article and not generalizing like the other person did.

Glad to hear you like it. Yep it's great! :)

My two replacements arrived today, ordered two days ago (I ordered 3 of them a couple of pages back). However in the mean time it does seem like there's been considerable improvement to the uniformity and bleeding especially on the worst screen. I'll check it out at home tonight, however was a late light last night so may not get a chance to do shots until tomorrow night (UTC+10).

Thank you 10e, I just tried this setting and I like it better than the out of box settings.

Out of the box the white balance is pretty poor on the U2412. It's got too much green and lacking heaps of red and blue, producing a greenish white balance. So you need to reduce green the most, then balance the red and blue. Having to reduce the RGB levels to correct the colour is what causes a loss of around 200 points of contrast ratio.

I'm not sure who's in charge of the factory calibration but they're not doing a very good job!

A shoot has been done [...]

Full shoot is here on my FLICKR account - please use the slideshow in max screen (arrows bottom right) as the black framing will improve contrast (remove big white surfaces that tend to kill the detail in the darks).

Hmmm. I'd definitely say it's better.

Angle slightly from bottom left, didn't get time to set up tripod so leant against a chair. Have received new screens but won't get time to try them until the weekend.

I should be getting my 2412 in on monday and I was wondering how you guys are hooking it up and what you would suggest? I have an hp envy 14, so i have a mini display port and an hdmi output....id prefer just a straight cable without an adapter so i was thinking either mini display port to display port, mini display to dvi, or hdmi to dvi.....which would give the best results?

Do the display port cables have to be 1.2 spec or will 1.1 work......

Hrmm... I thought the I1D2 was a no go because it does not have tables for LED backlighting?

I had another quick question for those who already have the monitor : How easy is it to switch input when 2 computers are connected to the same monitor?

I know that some monitors have a button that does it, others need to go deep into the menu..

When I work from home, I'd like to connect my work laptop to my monitor's VGA input and be able to switch when needed to my home computer.

Thanks!

No button for it directly afaik, input is like 1 level down in the menu

Activate Menu > Inputs > Auto/DVI/VGA/HDMI

We should call it a more simple approach because only the euclidean distance is calculated. Lab and Luv are not perceptual uniform, therefore the dE94 approach tries to compensate for this (with respect to saturation of the reference sample) in the Lab space.

But: With achromatic colors as reference, the euclidean distance and dE94 are identical (HCFR calculates the distance not in the Lab but Luv space - that doesn't lead to significant other results in this case). One main problem in comparability lies elsewhere: Especially when measuring uncalibrated setups with HCFR (and some other software in the area of TV calibration) the white point handling proves to be quite disadvantageous. Unless the actual whitepoint reaches the internal preset (a problem also for evaluation of display neutrality because the actual whitepoint should of course set the reference point) the transformations from XYZ are not consistent. Chromatic adaptations are also not carried out.

Hence I have attached a processing of the colorimetric values (sonic_blues pre calibration) under consideration of actual whitepoint (deltaC of grey axis describes neutrality) and correct transformations. Target: sRGB:

Still quite bad - even if the grey axis would be neutral... the actual whitepoint is far away from the blackbody curve - not uncommon for a native whitepoint - but if a color temperature preset in Kelvin was choosen this shouldn't happen.

Best regards

Denis

You can change the two top "quick keys" under the "personalization" menu from the main OSD interface, ie. the first screen that appears when entering the OSD. Defaults are "brightness/contrast" and "preset modes" but you can change one (or both) to "inputs" if you want.

I'm using the cable that came with my 3008WFP and I will assume that it is 1.1. On my 5870 card it's working smashingly.

Thanks for the input Denis.

Since I consider you to be very knowledgeable on color and calibration, would a spectrophotometer like the I1Pro be a better instrument to measure color on an W-LED as well as the wider gamut screens available nowadays?

I have the older GammaComp MD I1D2 OEM'd colorimeter which I know only has been custom calibrated with adjustments for the previous NEC wide gamut screens, like my LCD2690WUXI-BK, but I've been curious if a spectrophotometer would improve results for both LED as well as wid(er) gamut screens than my NEC 26".

I understand that while spectrophotometers are not considered as accurate at low light measurements from what I've read, but I'm willing to deal with such a caveat.

Thanks!

Want to make sure I got everyone that requested the Dell rep info. If you have not please PM me.

Yes, thanks Lolang! Bought 3 today from your contact @ $319.20 + tax. The deal includes free shipping, too.

got mine today :D, didnt have time to test it :(
anyone knows if an unshielded 3 (or 5) meters dvi cable would work without problems with this resolution?
thanks

I'm using the one that shipped with the monitor until I can find the DVI-D cable I bought awhile back (or until I buy another lol). AFAIK, single link unshielded is working fine for me.

Just got mine in today, will have pictures (on this post) once it gets darker here and I find something to hold my camera still. Looks there's some glow in the bottom right corners of both monitors, but it's so minor I can really only notice it when I black out the screens....I'm not terribly picky either

Pictures:
Left Monitor
Right Monitor
Both

Left one is definitely not straight on, and I can't really notice the lighter right side corners unless I'm looking for them and the lights are off. The pictures exaggerate a bit, and I don't have a nice enough camera to give me more control.

Doesn't make any difference in my experience. I've calibrated CCFL & LED VA, TN, IPS and get the same result on all of them. Except for TN's which require me to rotate the colourimeter on the screen 90 degrees otherwise it reads completely wrong colour. I'm guessing this is due to the "twisted" pixel structure of TN panels?
