Dell U2412M

Doesn't explain apple's glossy ACD27 and it's similar products, nor does it explain Hazro's 27WA, which uses' LG's 2H coating. Dell made the choice with 3H on all their panels, and I agree with the decision (completely? no. But enough that 3H is better than glossy to me).

3H is hardness (resistance to scratches) but it doesn't mean how much it dispurses glare. There are many very hard substances that are perfectly clear.:

ah, I see. Why would someone release a monitor with 2H, though?

Might be cost? Or maybe they require a coating with a specific property that they can only make it as hard as 2H without losing the specific property they want.

From what I understand, all of dell's monitors use a coating with 3H, but if you look at the different models they all have different amounts of anti-glare (even if they are same size/res, the only difference being model numbers), where I work there are various different dell monitor models (none IPS I believe) but they have different degrees of anti glare, infact there is even an old imac (the all white ones) that thing has a very noticable sparkle effect, the resolution isn't high for the size of the screen which means the dot pitch is not that small. I'll have a better look tomorrow, but I know the imac one is more noticable than the others.

But if that isn't additional proof that 'hardness' has nothing to do with 'sparkles' on AG coatings, I'm not sure what would be considered proof.

I found this link about the pencil hardness scale.

It's not meant to explain it. Apple asked for a clear glossy coating which may still be 3H in hardness but is not matte.

Dell spec'd matte panels from LG and that's what they got. Apple asked for something different and that's what they got. The ACD and Hazros use panel LM270WQ1 and Dell and NEC use LM270WQ2 which are different panels with different backlighting and different anti-glare. The LM270WQ1 is spec'd from LG as a "glare" type panel judging from the specs. The ACD and Hazros are 8-bit, sRGB gamut with glossy, and the NEC and Dell are 8-bit+FRC wide gamut with anti-glare.

It's not Dell, it's LG.

P.S. One question, where did you see 2H hardness? If I remember correctly (and confirmed by Daemos in the above post) the hardness has something to do with the ability of a certain hardness lead pencil to be able to penetrate the coating. 2H would be less than 3H.

really? Explain Hazro's HZ27WA, which was put to market specifically since it had less harsh AG (based on forum response). 2H coating, as a matter of fact :p Where is the 3H there? Maybe if I rolleyes, I'll get a faster response...

1H 2H and 3H is only a standard that describe some physical specific of coating but not the granular level.
2H is only the precedent standard version, 3H is the actual.

3H is used by TN, VA and IPS. Can u say that the matte coating is same for all ? i dont think !

I hate dell.

I DID NOT order mine via small business.

I ordered it on 7/31 and two days later they say its delayed until 8/8.

Today I log into my email and they have delayed it until 8.16.

WHAT. THE. F%#%#!!!

I am livid. I am this close to canceling and going with a better, more customer oriented company.

On the phone with Dell right now... and guess what - got transfered to Customer Service and they have not even picked up 10 minutes later. This is an atrocity.

I believe you are mistaken. Everything I read says the 27WA is Glossy, not less harsh AG. No AG. That includes Hazro themselves.

"The glossy LED panel offers deeper blacks and brighter whites and is preferred by gamers who require the very highest contrast ratios. "

Atrocity, huh? Overreact much? :)

just receive and setup this monitor, all I say is "WOW" blow away my U2211 and U2311 in everyway .

I'm dying to know how Green Hornet, Just Go With It, Soul Surfer, and those other two movies I can't quite make out look on this monitor? :p

Just plugged in the two that showed up at my door. In terms of quality, this this blows away my TN panels of previous (Samsung 2233rz and 2253H)

Then I loaded up CS 1.6...

Holy hell how do any of you game on an IPS display ? I feel like I have 4 refrigerators and a rubber band tied to my hand. My 60hz TN wasn't like this so I have no idea what could be causing it. I dont know if its input lag or what, but my 47" IPS vizio is easier to play on than this thing. Am i missing some setting? It feels like input lag, but I had no idea i was this sensitive to a few ms. 2233rz (give I know its 120hz), blows this thing out of the water in terms of gaming and ability to aim. Its like the screen is 1 full second behind me.

That definitely doesn't sound right. I played Crysis 2 on this monitor and didn't see any issues like that. Albeit I'm not the most super-mega-high-speed player but there must be something else causing it.

Are you using DisplayPort or DVI?

DVI-D Cable

Fixed it, had vsync left in the let the application decide setting and for games like cs 1.6, that mean ON. mouse lag was terrible. DOH.

Bladestorm,

I'm curious how you copied icecpu's post, and yet you have a different picture?

rmp459,
It may happen when users move from low resolution junks to full resolution screens.
Check your mouse settings, game settings, etc.- what gamers should know.
People enjoy gaming on 2560x1600 IPS with no problem.

Not quite following, but I am doing nothing different. Scaling 800x600 to a 16:10 screen. Before it was 1680x1050, now its 1920x1200. Not quite sure yet... ill keep fiddling around.

Wow, I didn't think anyone had played at 800x600 for the last 10 years. Maybe 15.

Guess you dont play competitive counter strike. I started on 800x600 back in like cs 1.3 or a beta version and haven't ever changed my settings. Its just what I need to compete on that game engine.

And for everyone else... False Alarm. Feel free to punch me.

Forgot I reinstalled my nvidia drivers about a week ago and left VSYNC on let application decide. Works fine for games where I can turn it off in the graphics settings, but CS 1.6 is too old and will leave it on. The mouse lag from that frame buffering and sync is horrible. I swear I have almost 3k posts on OCN... LOL

PS. I love these displays.

@albovin

You were dead on man... I was just being impatient. Thanks.

Dell tends to overestimate the delivery time by a large margin.

You should try getting them in Australia; I was told 3 weeks in the order confirmation ... and 1.75 days after that my three monitors were here. :) Wednesday arvo order, Friday morning delivery.

A little off-topic here, what are the typical screens used by LCD HDTV manufacturers?

Well just got mine and am pretty impressed. My friend has a 2311 and this is atleast as good as his. What is everyone using for settings. I don't have anything to calibrate with but am satisfied with getting close.

Also seems like this monitor doesn't like my displayport cord. Turns out it is a 1.1 not a 1.2. Does anyone know where you can get a 1.2 cable. I seem to be having trouble finding them at a reasonable price.

Grats on your screen! I'm actually using an active DisplayPort adapter to DVI for my third screen. This is what I was using before (all DVI screens only), and DP cables are indeed quite expensive - so I won't be replacing them soon .. I need 3 metres too, for my cabling.

anything from your run of the mill TN, some IPS, some Plasma, and rarely, a *VA. Maybe an OLED, too. But those are super rare.

Hey 10e could you possibly give me all your settings for the monitor so that I can copy yours.

Just recieved the Dell U2412 a few hours ago and have been testing and calibrating it since. Here are my findings.

Pros:
-excellent colour uniformity
-smooth gradation (no banding pre-calibration, negligible banding after)
-good contrast, 1160:1 pre-calibration (127cd/m2 : 0.11cd/m2), 950:1 after calibration (121cd/m2 : 0.128cd/m2)
-no backlight bleeding
-no input lag
-low motion blur/ghosting
-optimal dot pitch for text readability

Cons:
-screen coating still has visible grain, although not as bad as the U2711, but it's still there.
-"IPS glow" in corners, mostly the bottom corners. On par with the U2711 in this regard.

Overall it's looking like a keeper though. My initial impression of this monitor is very good. I definitely prefer it to the U2711 and BL2400PT which I had before it.

Ok now I'm measuring 1004:1 after calibration (121.4cd/m2 : 0.121cd/m2) , a slightly better result. Not really noticeable in the real world but nice to have it bump over 1000:1 :D

U2412M is not suitable for gaming according to flatpanelsHD because of much overdrive trailing.

From the article:

"I compared U2412M to U2410 and saw that U2412M actually has less motion blurring that U2410 – mostly in the darker picture areas. On the other hand U2412M has slightly more overdrive trailing. Nothing serious, and nothing to worry about for most users, but I think that critical gamers might prefer the lower level of overdrive trailing on U2410."

I've seen both side by side with a friend of mine. And while the U2412 is probably the best budget IPS 24 inch I would still take the U2410 over it...

Is the glow in the corners a good enough reason to send it in for another one? I dont think i notice it when gaming but on dark backgrounds I do. I only really notice it in 2 corners.
