If you've been looking to get your grubby little hands all over id Software's source code for Doom 3, John Carmack has some good news for you.

John Carmack is apparently a big fan of helping his fans out. As a result, the man in charge of id Software has revealed that his studio is going to release the source code for Doom 3 to the general public. However, exactly when this year he plans to release the code isn't entirely clear yet.

Speaking at Quakecon 2011, Carmack announced the decision and stated thatZenimax (id's parent company) was actually supportive of the code's release. He also reportedly challenged other studios to release source code for their games, "arguing that it helps the community."

Doom 3's source code won't be released until the launch of Rage (which is due out October 4th). How soon after Rage's release hasn't been revealed, yet. Meanwhile, Carmack also that Id Tech Five (which is used on current games) will be released when id is no longer using it for official projects, though "this could be as long as ten years away."

While it has some pros and cons on source this is awesome news.

About time. I was worried that Zenimax wasn't going to let him. Now this means that there's hopes for Rage's code being released in the future. It definitely helps the modding community out big time. Just look at Quake II Evolved and what they've done with that engine!

John Carmack has already stated that id Tech 5's source code will be released as soon as id stops using it for games after the development of id Tech 6. He's not one to make statements that he doesn't know he can fulfill.

As for the release of id Tech 4's source, I hope someone gets around to making a true Quake(the original) sequel with this engine. It's art style and level design with a more modern engine would be great.

Nothing but admiration for Carmack and his team.

The rest of the development community need to pay attention to this man.

There are still id tech 4 games scheduled for release such as Prey 2. I'm wondering if they can actually release the source before those are released?

In all likelihood, it's the branch of the engine used for Quake 4 being used in Prey 2, which at this point is a significant modification (more along the lines of a 4.5 branch) when compared to the original D3 engine.

This would depend on the terms of the contract between Bethesda/id and Human Head regarding the license of the engine. There is no date set for the source code release, so it's entirely possible that they'll wait.
