This coming August 28th, a new law goes into effect in Missouri prohibiting teachers from having any social contact with students via social networking sites such as Facebook, etc. The law enforces policies that have been in place for some time.

Senate Bill 54 is designed to protect children from sexual misconduct by teachers, compelling school districts to adopt written policies between teachers and students on electronic media, social networking and other forms of communication.

Well, that's nice and all, but they should've gone with something a bit more constructive, like legislating that parents and teachers have to friend each other. What's every little trouble maker's worst nightmare? Their parents and teacher being close friends.

Ya that sounds better, what if a student is friends with a teacher out side of school, friends with parents, friends with teachers kids?

Also should be mentioned to protect teachers from any sort of job repercussions if they don't act like a teacher 24/7/365, way more stories of teachers being put on administrative leave/being fired than teachers who get too cozy to their students via social networking.

Makes sense and doesn't really surprise me. I'm a teacher and under our contract we can't have contact with current students through social media (i.e. Facebook). I'm really not for the gov't telling us everything we can and can't do, but I'd be willing to bet that many school districts around the country have something similar to this already embedded in the teacher's contract.

Seriously?

When I was in school, I WANTED to have sex with my teachers.

Teachers are people, not robots. This law in inhumane.

So now kids who have parents that are teachers can go hog wild on the internet since their teachers aren't allowed to friend them or hack their accounts >.>

pretty sure stuff like that would be fine.

what's next?

Teachers are not allowed to make eye contact with precious innocent snowflakes in the classroom?

We've raised about 2 generations of spoiled rotten uneducated brats. Coupled with the fact that parents seem to have been absolved of any responsibility raising their own crotch fruit it's a perfect storm of retarded.

Easy fix: do like the old days - corporal punishment. We didn't have kids blowing up schools or fucking their teachers 30 years ago because kids need discipline.

Retards voting retards into office
Retards policing the streets and the world.
Retards all around!

Yeah, because having the government legislate how parents raise their kids is always the answer.

If I were a child I'd be terrified of my parents and teacher being friends. My teacher could easily blackmail me.

That would be hell for the teachers

btw, all of the action seems to happen at Shawnee Mission West (which is in KS). Several sex scandals, and the school has probably produced more porn stars than Ivy League students. Wish I had gone there for high school.

Hmm so um... while the kids are online they are safe from sexual misconduct by teachers.
thats good and all but um... what about when the kids is less than 10 feet away from the teacher
(ya know, like when the kids are in the classroom ???)

Missouri must have some scary teachers
or abused politicians.

and what about friending my churchs priest ?

i agree, this generation of kids is spoiled because parents let someone else raise their kids instead of instilling them with the morals most of us were raised with, the next few gens of society are screwed.

they all think they are owed something in life.... unreal.

I have 3 former teachers on my friends lists for Facebook, Google Plus, and Steam. Shouldn't the policy be "don't hire pedophiles" and "educate your child"?

It did make for some interesting excuses when my history teacher joined us in a CS:Source match on the night before a midterm though.

I slept with two of my teachers back in 86 when I was 18 and we didn't have facebook then. One woman was on the 3rd floor near my locker and taught a special education class, she was 27. She commented on my mototcycle, gave her a ride and you can guess the rest. Another teacher my senior year taught english and she was 24. I ended up moving in with her during the summer. My mom was pissed, my dad gave me high fives. You don't need the internet to get laid but it does make things easier.

I bet other states follow.

Okay that's dumb. What teacher is prepared to violate sexual conduct laws - usually a felony - but won't violate a social networking clause in their employment contract?

All I could find in the bill that refers to social networking is this:

SECTION 162.069 - By January 1, 2012, every school district must develop a written policy concerning teacher-student communication and employee-student communications. Each policy must include appropriate oral and nonverbal personal communication, which may be combined with sexual harassment policies, and appropriate use of electronic media as described in the act, including social networking sites. Teachers cannot establish, maintain, or use a work-related website unless it is available to school administrators and the child's legal custodian, physical custodian, or legal guardian. Teachers also cannot have a nonwork-related website that allows exclusive access with a current or former student.

Does that really preclude a teacher and student from being Facebook friends? Reading the paragraph I don't get that as the intention.

Totally agree with this comment!

I guarantee that children were sleeping with their teachers 30 years ago, it just wasn't you "collegeboy69". If you can't figure out why it gets more attention nowadays then it's not just the next generation that's retarded ;-)

When I was in grade school, the teacher or principle would whoop the student/me then called the parent and they'll whoop them some more.
People would go to jail today if that happened.

People now think they have some revolutionary way of raising children, but they're only producing more self-absorbed douche bags.

I think you'll be proven wrong once those children mature.

Bingo! I think you hit the common sense nail on the head. It's like saying gun laws make a difference as well.

That's because news is always over-sensationalized to present a story that does not exist.

Well, I'm a teacher too and I think that the law is absurd. I don't as a general personal policy make social network contacts with my students. But I'm actually planning on making a social network page for my class this year to facilitate outside of class sharing of information and questions about homework assignments.

Social networking is just one piece of communication technology. The next thing that someone will do is outlaw student-teacher telephoning, student-teacher texting, student-teacher running to each other at the super market or mall near where both of them live.

And how does one enforce this? Do you need to friend your principal or headmaster?

The closer a teacher was to me, the more impactful they were on my life and schooling. In other words, the less they were just "my teacher."

It's unfortunate that we have to mandate hand-tying just because a minority of bad apples exist. Does that mean teachers should be involved in a student's life? Perhaps not...they shouldn't supplant parents and shouldn't get involved inappropriately, but it sucks when hard walls are put up like this.

I also understand that this protects teachers from predatory students as well. I'm sure any teacher who knows someone else accused of sexual misconduct by a vindictive student would rather avoid *that* drama...

Pay teachers more (so we don't drive off the decent people aan get left with junk.)
Promote more teacher/parent interaction, which hopefully will...
Drive more parental involvement.

I feel the more involved (in a positive way!!!) parents are in their children's, err, childhood and education, the healthier the child will be.

you must not live in Mo. the law is designed to hell keep it quiet rather then prevent it. ;)

Well, people are just not using common sense here, not that I agree with the states "blanket approach" to the problem. But, on the other hand, what choices do they really have? Not many.

At the end of it all, adults are responsible for the safe keeping of society's young people. Students in this case.

Sure, most teachers have a built in moral compass that would keep them from seducing and possibly have a sexual relationship with a student.

But whatever the percentage is of teachers that would ignore this at bed some of their 17 and 18 year old students, or younger, and from the news, it's not just male teachers, it's female teachers as well. Why take a chance? Hence this blanket policy.

If there is even the slightest chance a handful of teachers having a sexual relationship with a student. Then things like this happen.

According to the law you can still do that.

Why not just expand this law to include everyone that's +/- 10 years because clearly being friends with the people you know everyday is just plain wrong. We should enforce the laws that we put on to others on to ourselves too right? Or is it really legal now to enact laws that are biased toward personal opinions.

This makes me believe that MO is going to have a law soon that's going to outlaw Priests and kids being facebook friends. I mean, Pedo Priests are out there, so to "protect" our kids we must make sure they aren't FB friends...That will stop it
