Just saw this, and anyone who had an account before f2p is now a legacy member.

I forsee a bunch of lols and rage from both spectrums.

Man they must be struggling, wasn't it just on sale? Is this some kind of unlimited trial with only select heroes?

I think so. The Facebook page is getting ragged on hard. I've seen only one positive comment and the rest is pure RAGE.

Well I'm downloading it just to piss off some elitist scum by sucking and not knowing when to deny or get back.

Well..... fuck

Time to hide behind my preorder+legacy+verified account. Keep the LoL scrubs away from me!

Huh, I was on the verge of biting the bullet and buying this game like 20 times. Now I dont have any interest. Figures.

no they're not struggling

they just had the $10 account sale to get more money

they have to make it free to play because this game will get wrecked by DotA2

they need a bigger player base so that the match making queue times will still be short when half the community leaves for DotA 2

i'm pretty pissed about this and am planning on a griefing spree

One year ago all the HoN elitist twelve year-olds said how easy, noobish and bad LoL is. Now it's one of the world's top e-sports and HoN is dying.

Nice.

you say that as if those are mutually exclusive things

one of the greatest HoN pros got to the top of the LoL ladder in a few months time, you can't say that the other way around

HoN is not dying, it's numbers are going to increase now with this change.

As an "E-sport" it's trash, just look at the DHS finals. Pause feature? Who the fuck needs that?

Huge playerbase means huge marketability, it doesn't mean it's any good. LoL had more "viewers" (I say that loosely because the dead stream still had 70k viewers 2 days after the finals) than SC2, but that doesn't make it a better game.

I'm not particularly pleased about HoN going F2P, but then I realized that my gameplay experience won't particularly change at all because i'm high enough up on PSR/MMR to avoid freshly verified trashcans.

Not sure if serious.

lol

Since when is HoN dieing? Take erage with a grain of salt. Everyone was raging just as hard when the game was down for a week+.

Honestly this change is not going to bother any of the existing user base. With the way the F2P is setup it sounds like I will have an even smaller chance of playing with fresh noobs. Sounds like a win win.

So logged in an there are 33k players on atm. Seems about right for this time of day + F2P additions. Seems like the usual pointless erage.

they spammed lol's site with this crap, the game is slowly dying, its inferior.

Glad to know the world's most mature and even tempered gaming community is handling it like adults

Going from $30 to $10 specials to F2P is a sure sign of struggle. LoL must be doing quite fantastic in contrast.

Games are going F2P , its not a "trend" its a working model that is highly successful. Would you rather have HoN dev's saying "Well due to the cost of operation and development we've decided to sell our company to a large publisher like (insert name here)" or "Well in order to continue to provide the player base with the experience they've come to enjoy and expect we've decide to move HoN to a Free to play model"?

Yes they are...the numbers just don't add up. You cant run a game that is niche in the first place...keep the barrier to entry high (LoL tweak the gameplay to be more forgiving, but it is still hard to master)...pump new content with full time employees...and only charge for an account once in its life time. It just doesn't add up. These types of games need constant income from the player base to stay relavant...that comes from microtransactions or a monthly fee.

What is going to be funny is when DotA 2 comes out and it uses some sort of microtransactions or just some straight monthly fee.

Let's have a gander at some of these philosophical quotes coming from all the intelligent discussion that is happening on Facebook shall we?

FUCKING SHIT GAME MOTHER FUCKERS NEVER PLAYING THIS GAME AGAIN I WASTED SO MUCH SHITTING MONEY SUPPORTING FUCKING S2 WHY U HAVE TO GO DO THIS TO ME IM GONNA GO KILL MYSELF NOW BYE BYE.

Excellent points , quite the poet I might add. James Joyce , eat your heart out.

fuccking scrumb bags!!! fuccck u and your community ! dumb fucck make me pay 30 dollars for this shitt and then its free for all now!! HOW COULD U!!! Never PLAY GAMES FROM S2 AGAIN, why bother if its free after 2 years

Well put friend , you've got a way with worrrdddss.

fucking bullshit, HoN is free to play now, this is so bullshit man. now therse gonna be loads of noobs and everything. -.-. Game = Ruined

Letting people know that with open arms they welcome the new players under there wing and look forward to a bright future of sportsmanship. What a welcoming and open community right there folks!

WOW! you have so ruined your game, your customer service is appauling and you expect gamers like me to buy another game off you again? for me to pay £20 to play which i was quite satisfied with now having you to want more money off me to play new heroes is absalutely discusting shame on S2 games.

Even our brothers across the pond are chiming in on there great excitement over the changes. its good to know despite our cultural differences we can all find common ground on this new change!

All sarcasm aside , talk about overreaction ... calm down and relax HoN players. Your world is not collapsing ... well come Monday our economy will so you can panic then. :)

^ Exactly.. I am a beta player and have that gold shield or whatever.. and I couldn't care less.

I haven't played since beta, what does the gold shield do?

also, that last quote had a valid point if they're going to charge people for heroes since they paid full price for a complete game.

Like I said before. HoN is not dieing, there is still a huge community and much better tourny play than LoL. Going F2P does not have to be a sign of struggle necessarily. There are only so many people you can get to buy a MOBA and with DoTA2 coming along its important to try and grab as many as you can.

I am glad its setup so I dont have to mingle with any of the new crappy players that might come on board.

All I have to say is this:
HAHA, now you elitist bastards have to deal with nubcakes again. Go elitist rage!

RTFM much?

They have to hit level 5 or buy in game currency to be verified. Honestly not going to be many noobs to bother you.

The game is definitely not dying. Have you checked out honcast.com? There are MULTIPLE ongoing tournaments for Heroes of Newerth that includes cash prizes.

I think it's funny that LoL releases their numbers (500,000 peak concurrent players/day), HoN releases theirs a little later (50,000 peak concurrent players/day), and then S2 decides to go F2P.

Glad I made the move to LoL two months ago... HoN is failing fast.

But I'm only playing LoL till DOTA 2 comes out anyway :p

Care to elaborate how its failing fast?

As an aside for everyone else...do you guys really find it surprising to see erage in a moba? Does not matter if its LoL, HoN, or DotA...the community is generally trash.

I was a HoN player first before I gave LoL a chance. I absolutely loved the game and its focus on balancing the gameplay around competitive play. But here's why HoN is starting to fail.

HoN, for the most part, is a direct port of DOTA plus some additional heroes and elements that they are JUST beginning to change (item reworks like hatchet, secret shop, etc). So its really pretty much a DOTA clone in its current stage, if not the closest thing you can find. Fine, that makes a lot of people happy. DOTA was a good game. But DOTA2 is coming out soon and will be demo'd in three weeks at Gamescon. Even if DOTA2 is a 7/10 game it will still carry the name which is a huge factor. It should be able to do anything that HoN does now at the same level if not better (Value funding, Icefrog balancing).

So HoN moves to F2P (which only a few months ago, less then 2 I believe) HoN developers said they would never work with such a model because the game is continuing to see success and new accounts. Well now its F2P, but too little too late. LoL already has a massive player base that HoN cannot possibly catch up to before DOTA2 releases. HoN is really stuck in no man's land standing neither as a game with a large player base to support it nor the originality factor. It's even borrowing elements of LoL's F2P system like the rotation of champions.

So I think HoN was an excellent game when it came out. It did a lot of things REALLY well and improved the ancient engine that DOTA was running on. But it failed to create anything beyond that. I have faith that DOTA2 will improve in all those areas plus attract a greater audience.

And for the last bit about ragers in MOBAs I have to agree. But LoL has one advantage here: no in game voice-chat. Much less drama!

Don't like these games. Never have, never will. They always seem to turn my level-headed friends into unlikeable rageaholic douches.

LoL's success comes from being free-to-play from the start and the easy going community. Hon has done well for itself but not everyone wants to pay for a game when a similar game out there is free. I have several friends who felt like this.

HoN's downside is all the rage players in the game. I'll admit that I was one to trash talk bads in the game back when I used to play. HoN takes more skill but the learning curve is unforgiving. LoL is simpler and kinder to it's players.

They may have tried it because it was free to play, but I promise you they have probably spent money on the game.

I the a lot of people spend money on LoL and just do not make it known. They do not want to feel "stupid" for spending money on a "free" game.

Well of course , while you don't need to spend a dime in LoL it helps if you are willing to spend some up front as it can give you some early choices. But there are also a lot of people who haven't spent anything on LoL.

That is correct, you can look at a tier list from CLGgaming.com or TeamSoloMid's website and look at their top tier rankings of champions and then pick up those few, and you'll likely be more than fine while playing normals once you learn how to play.
