SILVERSTONE TJ08E - New MicroATX Case

Chiphell used a Thermalright HR02, so VenomousX should be no problem.

Do you guys think because of the small case that the Thermalright HR02 fanless would work well? Would additional fans disrupt airflow at all since it appears the 120mm rear pulling fan is directly in line with it? I didnt even know about this heatsink until I saw it in chiphells build.

guys, here are my case temperatures for your reference.

using stock Intel cooler. no video card. for system spec and photos, refer to page 5-6.

i'm planning to add new cooler and video card soon. still deciding on what to buy.

processor overclocked to ~4.0GHz (multiplier x40) and undervolted to -0.080V (to minimize heat).. room temperature at 23C.. run Prime95 overnight..

Took me quite a bit of time to swap out my system to my new TJ08B-E case. Components:

2600K @ 4.5GHz 1.295vcore
ASRock Z68 Pro3-M
2x2GB G. Skill ECO CL7
Corsair H50 + Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1850RPM Fan
NZXT Hale90 650w 80+ Gold Modular PSU
2x Crucial M4 64GB SSD
2x Samsung F3 1TB HDD

Here are some pictures of my build (1st time trying to do wire management, I know I can do a better job but it works for me):

FYI, you may run into issues with a wide cooler that uses dual fans. Chiphell shows a pic with the HR02 and how close it is to the 3.5" drives.

Looking good richierich. It seems they fixed the two major issues I had with the original TJ08. Cable management and removal of the 3.5" internal bays(they could be removed, but the drive covers were screwed into the internal bays...dumb design...).

On a side note, what is your PPD for the 2600k @ 4.5ghz with WCG?

How can I calculate my PPD?

No big deal if you don't want to calculate it.

To calculate it:
1. Go to your WCG stat page and go to your device stats.
2. Add up the points for the past couple weeks.
3. Add up the time ran for the same points.
4. Divide points/time to get a ~PPD.

Another way is to use free-dc, they can give the RAC for individual machines if you have it setup properly. Although, the RAC will be in BOINC points rather than WCG points.

http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=user&proj=bwcg&name=670774 is my page. I have a 2600k @ 4.4ghz and it gets about 5600 RAC (~39200WCG PPD), but I know some people say a 2600k should be getting about 42-43k at that speed. Just wanted to compare to someone if I need to change some settings :D.

Looks like the cooler width and depth have to be considered as well as height. I was keen on using a Noctua NH-C14 with this case. Height wise it fits fine. But the depth x width is 166 x 140 mm and judging by the picture above that won't fit once the hard drives are installed.

Can anyone with this case take some measurements and confirm?

god lord im so screwed... max height for memory is 54mm.... fml with my kingston superB heatsink

Anyone know how high Corsiar Vengeance heatsinks are? Also has anyone tried two video cards in there TJ08E?

Given the clearance issues we are finding, I'm wondering for a non-overclocked build, would the Corsair H60 or Antec Kuhler 620 be a good option? Realise these coolers don't exactly rate highly. But they are such an easy fit.

Debating on getting this case or the Lian Li V354 w/ a Z68 build. Anyone care to point out some pros and cons that would make my decision easier? :D

I'm in the same boat. The TJ08E looks like it has better cable management but with all the restrictions I'm having second thoughts.

Just finished my build with the TJ08-E over the weekend (migrated from the venerable Sugo SG01-E which I ditched due to it being borderline on being able to cool my 2600K properly). Here are some initial impressions:

  • Case is small for a normal tower case, but IMO a bit too large to be considered a proper SFF case. At ~30L, it's almost 40% larger than my old SG01-E (at ~22L). I had thought about getting an SG04 instead (at ~24L), but decided the more flexible cooling options, extra drive bays, and cable management was worth the extra size.
  • Threw in a Xigmatek Gaia tower cooler for the CPU. Even with this being one of the thinner tower coolers, I was barely able to fit the front fan (installing 2 fans for push/pull) and still be able to use the HD bays with 3.5" drives. In fact, the first SATA cable I used didn't work as the rubber part of the connector was too long and hit the fan. I found another cable with a shorter rubber connector which worked, although I had to bend cable a bit so that it wouldn't hit the fan. I bought a SATA cable over the weekend with a right angle connector which should work fine, though I haven't installed it yet.
  • Default 180mm fan is pretty noticeable at high speed, but pretty quiet at low speed (though still audible). At low speed, the Xigmatek fan is the loudest fan in the system (planning to replace with Scythes anyway). The sound signature of the fan is not what I would consider offensive, even at high speed
  • Temps for 2600K (non-overclocked) in the low 30s at idle and in the low 50s at full load (old SG01-E had mid-40s at idle and low 70s, so this makes me happy). Old system was quieter at idle but much noisier at load (replacing Xigmatek fan should fix this). The fans don't even seem to spin up at load in the new case.
  • The top screw holes for the PS don't seem to line up quite right with my Seasonic X760. Build quality issue I suppose. I have the PS fan flipped up for now. Don't notice any issue with GPU temps, though I'm only using a Radeon 6850. The top part of the 180mm fan does seem to throw a little air at the GPU.
  • Having cable management is wonderful.

Next addition is to throw 3 Scythe fans (2 on tower cooler in push/pull, 1 on back exhaust). Probably will use PWM fans for all 3 (using PWM splitter). Should create a nice quiet air tunnel from front to back. I might throw up some pics when I'm done with this.

Overall, pretty pleased except for now having a larger case. Next build might be an SG08 though since I still want a true SFF setup in the long run.

Found this:
Corsair today updated its DDR3 memory family with a new low profile memory module -- the Vengeance LP. Corsair reports that the Vengeance LP memory feature heat spreaders with a reduced height of 1.03" (26.25 millimeters), compared to the standard height of 1.87" (47.37 millimeters).

So the older Vengeance is 47.37mm..Should fit.

This case looks to be PERFECT for using a Seasonic X-400 or X-460 because of the top PSU vent; you can happily overload a X-400 or X-460 due to that, and even if you don't, it can power a pretty good system.

CrossFire 6850 fanless is probably what's a perfect GPU combination due to the 180mm AP fan, and stick a Xeon E3-1230 with a wide fin-spacing heatsink like Xigmatek Thor's Hammer and your only fan is the 180mm.

Review up at SPCR.

Good review. Might upgrade my A05 to this and as the A04 and Fractal cases are all the same size as the A05.

Space wouldn't be a problem in my situation either, as the HD cage would be removed cause I only use 1 SSD.

Cable maangement looks easy enough as well.

I am going to buy this case to replace my TJ08. Mostly because of a few reasons.

1. Cable management (TJ08 is a pain)
2. Removable 3.5" drive bay as I have an SSD
3. Looks more stylish

I just built this, cable management is still a bit tricky, and they recommend you leave the HD cage in even if empty as it acts as a shroud for the front fan.

Hmm, that makes sense, but it is something I would test to see which is more effective when using the case. A test is needed!

Yeah, cable management will be tricky no matter what as it is a small case, but it it miles above the original TJ08.

Has anyone measured the inside of the case ? Could someone please measure between the bottom of the 5.25 bay and the floor "3.5 Bay"

Thought someone would of tried to squeeze 2x120 or a 200 rad in there by now :(

I was a little surprised by Silverstone's recommendation to leave the HDD cage in place even if empty. I thought the whole point of their fan design was to create a less-dispersed airflow pattern. If it really works, I would think it wouldn't make much of a difference whether the HDD cage was there or not, particularly in a small case like the TJ08-E.

I guess there is one other role for the cage - it would certainly keep cables from interfering with the airflow. However, we all do such a great job of cable management that this wouldn't be an issue for us :)

We were surprised too about the hard drive cage when conducting thermal testing during TJ08-E's development. But it does help reduce tested CPU temperature by a few degrees especially when the front intake fan speed is lower.

Anyone know why it's so hard to find this case? Its sold out everywhere!! I've been waiting weeks to start my build :(

Does that still apply if you are using a watercooling unit like an H50?

thanks for the link kjeldoran but i live in canada and the shipping is double that. Stupid canada!! :p I dont really want to spend $150 on this case but im thinking i might have to.

Ah, that sucks. No idea about a canada etailer. :(

N C I X has it for a very reasonable $98.62 Canadian, but it's on backorder. Looks like you can order it though and at least get a spot in line.

Our US warehouse was out of TJ08-E since last week, but another shipment is supposedly coming this week so they should be in stock soon.

This looks like it could fit a Noctua D14, 7' PSU and a 10.5 vid card, or might I be wrong ? just have to out the dvd-r , actually thought it was longer.

Any chance for a silver edition of this case coming out soon?
