Scotland Yard has announced the arrest of LulzSec's spokesman. When asked for a statement, authorities simply replied "we did it for the lulz." :D

The Metropolitan Police's Central e-Crime Unit arrested a 19-year-old at an address in Scotland's remote Shetland Islands, the force said in a statement. His name wasn't released, but police said he was believed to be "Topiary," one of LulzSec's most prominent members.

A group of people with no structure doesn't have a spokesman.

And the guys they have in custody are just naming names under coercion. We're going to see a lot of innocent people's lives ruined in this witch hunt.

I don't see it as a witch hunt. I see it as you're an idiot that decided to be "anonymous" and by joining a huge group that hoped to use you to hide their actions.

Its like speeding in a car. You join a pack of speeders and hope you're the one not going to get pulled over by a cop.

Unless you know exactly who the real suspects are and whats going on in those interrogation rooms you cant know that for sure.

I'm fairly certain that the police are going on more than just a list of names given to them by the people they have in custody. Otherwise it would be the fastest acquittal you have ever seen.

It's a show of force. They know they can quietly drop charges later and the news will ignore it like good little puppets, but they'll trumpet the arrests like nobody's business.

thats great. hope all these little nutsacs end up tried and convicted. guess you werent so anonymous after all eh dumb ass?

If he is who the they think he is and is from shetland then he deserved to get caught, you can't really hide amongst 22,000 people spread over 16 islands. IF he is guilty hope he gets what he deserves

So lets go with that hypothesis: They are just arresting people to look good.

Then Lulz should keep on hacking without fear. Then people will know the police are full of BS. But something tells me the recent rash of arrest will slow them down a bit.

No one has the right to rule the net. That includes the self rightous idealogs of lulzsec.

Yea, w/o the rabble-rousers among them, those in it for fun/cool factor are going to evacuate.

Have they said what exactly he was arrested for or charged with? Posting tweets?

I'm just pissed all these backwater euro locations have better broadband access than the friggin USA. A remote island? Seriously?

That's not the hypothesis at all. They are arresting people to indimidate, which makes your second part accurate:
But something tells me the recent rash of arrest will slow them down a bit.

They don't want anyone "ruling the net". The whole thing started (and escalated) because speech and information is being suppressed. Now they're making a show of force to further suppress this line of thinking. They want people to believe that if they express a desire for openness and honesty from the government, then they're going to be black bagged by Interpol/CIA/NSA/FBI/Secret Service/Scotland Yard.

To intimidate. Right. So, if this were just a show of force and they didn't actually have anyone important from LulzSec, then why would that person stop all contact? I mean, let's be completely serious here. It would be completely obvious to the people that they are going after that the people are in fact in custody. When the arrested stops posting on the internet during the time of the arrest and never comes back on to prove the police wrong, then I think they GOT THE RIGHT PERSON. LulzSec and Anonymous are comprised of young people that have at least a bit of talent with their computer, but on average are clearly lacking in maturity. The member they are talking about here cleared out evidence in his Twitter account, obviously understanding that he was likely a target, and stopped posting after the arrest was made. Situational evidence, yes, but it makes sense to me with the personalities of most of these 'hackers'.

Obedience is maturity these days, I guess.

It's amazing that after all these centuries of human history, with all the repeated iterations of the same thing over and over, people fall for this same script:
Government: "Citizens, that person is your enemy! He threatens your way of life"
Citizens: "Yeah! Get him!"

So how do they decide what is right and wrong? Aren't they themselves making themselves judge & jury by selecting their targets.

Why don't we put all information about there? Troup movements, secret weapons programs and nuclear secrets, potential soft targets, informants. What's safe?

I mean if everyone knew everything, would the world be a safer place? Would there be any bad guys left?

That's why lulzsec is a group of self-rightous idealogs.

Quite frankly I support EFF.org. I also support Mastercard and paypal, both PRIVATE businesses for boycotting wikileaks. Wikileaks is dangerous to those who work to protect us from those who would harm us.

But inapplicable to lulsec. They have nothing to do with my way of life and everything to do with the risk of exposing my personal data. For that, personally, I hope they all get put away.

Not forever. But a good 5 year stay would do them some good.

At least as many times, people like you have fallen for this same script:
Random Asshole: "Citizens, the government is your enemy! All this trouble we're causing is for your own good!"
Citizens: "Yeah! Keep stealing, bombing, killing, or hacking!"

Look, fattypants with his mouth firmly planted on the ass of LulzSec, once again. Can we get him arrested for being one of their spokesmen too? Please? Who do I write to to make that happen?

Waterboard the guy they arrested and see what he spits out, that's how I'd go about it.

Like a modern-day Staatssicherheit

Ahh, yes, what we call "every government overthrow and revolution in history".
Including the death, destruction and chaos that results therefrom, with no guarantee that anything will improve. And I hate to break it to you, the Luiz Boat will not be overthrowing any government by hacking Paypal.

Err, you know there are several major Fiber lines on the ocean floor spanning the globe right, you think a 1 mile chunk of fiber is going to be difficult, broadband is a very encompassing term though, could be a single ISDN (64Kbps) line?

Any more info on that?

most probably the info given by the A-Team helped alot in this (if not they were also actually asked helped by the authorities). kudos to them..

Im still amazed on the people who are "awe"-spired by them ,hehe, im thinking they are on the same age level and have both a lulzy anonymous character in some sort of way

A Team is on the case?

Oh shit! Murdoch is gonna tear some shit up! Lulz better be scared... After he is found, BA is going to rape him.

We should have brought a bigger lulzboat

A group of people with no structure doesn't have a spokesman.

A group of people with no structure don't act in concert for a common goal. Without connections you have no organization. Without organization, you cannot be effective. Anonymous and Lulzsec must have a structure. It may be loose, but it is still present, and if it is present, it can be followed. You're just mad that people are being arrested, and are living in denial as a result. Breaking the law has consequences, whether you agree with them or not. Expect more arrests in the future as your "structureless" organization (what an oxymoron that is) continues to fail at living up to its name.
