Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

DCUO and AOC faile dbecause both relied not on player skill, but on LEVELS and GEAR.

If you want player skill in combat to make a difference, you have to allow it now, and not make gear/lv's > every little thing or you can get around it by having tier systems.

That's one thing Warhammer did excellent. In PVPthe lower lv's got buffed to higher lv's in pvp area's, and it worked great. You could pvp whenever you wanted and didn't hav eto race to lv to do it.

AoC's big problem in PVP from a melee standpoint was being immobile casting a combo.

The game was fail from day one and all the patching in the world couldn't fix that soggy shit sandwich. I'd rather create printer queues or create group policies in active directory all day on a really slow server over an even slower VPN connection than play SWG.

Yeah ok, it wasn't that bad. Perhaps EQ for you instead?

yeah I don't know how much time I can commit (wife/kids) to leading a full guild, but I can certainly help out with one... You have any names in mind?

I don't care, I'll run the guild, come on in and have some fun...only time I need the Shens to stop is when we are raiding because I can get mental if people are clowning around. But other than that, hard core or casual...lets all have some fun.

I named it Dark Side Apocalypse...

join up if you would like...

I"m gonna enjoy plastering you Sithtards with my Commando Troopers bulked up cannon and sexy Twi'lek slave/bodyguard. I'm gonna shoot a huge rocket at your emo clothed butts with your cute little glowing red sticks while I get a galactic handjob, all while saving the Republic

I don't see why. It doesn't have to be the main focus of the game. A few server dedicated to that doesn't seem to crazy to me. 90% of the player base probably wouldn't want anything to do with it but those of us that like a challenge would more than likely. The same game just a more "hardcore' ruleset. Why is this difficult? Or a pipedream? remember I'm not saying the game in general should be this way, just a server or 2.

Because it's not seen as marketable. Servers are expensive. Servers with low and burnout apt populations are absolutely not a consideration for companies wanting to make money. It might go over well enough, but we won't know because it's not going to get tried. EQ's throwback servers are about as close as this idea is going to get.

Phhht! I can't wait to etch an 'N' in your pansy armor plate with mah sizzle stick...then I'ma stir a Jack and Coke with it and Lolz!

Thats been tried before, it usually doesn't go well. Then again it usually isn't done well. DCU O and AoC come to mind with the skill over gear.

DaoC did this right and it is still my favorite MMO of all time. Shadowbane was another skill vs gear game that did it well, too bad there were so many exploits otherwise it would have had a long run.

AoC and DCUO were both more about gear than skill IMO.

Nope. Age of Conan and Guild Wars were the only MMOs I ever liked up to this point. I tried WoW, SWG and hated them both. I never played Everquest 1 or 2.

Has anyone seen or heard the devs talk about faction balancing? When I'm browsing the guild pages on SWTOR.com for PvP guilds, there seems to be an overwhelming imbalance of Empire to Republic guilds. I have a feeling this may cause some issues when it comes to open world PvP as well as instanced PvP (ie. queue times).

I guess I'm not surprised based on the trailers they've released, which make the Empire look badass and the Republic look like a bunch of weenies. But I'm just wondering if they have any plans to address these types of imbalances?

I haven't heard anything either...but I also don't see how they can fix it? Do you want them to make you be republic even though you don't want to be?

Plus, it doesn't matter to us republic's....we know you, empire scum, need more then a 1:1 ratio to kill us :p

No, I don't want to be forced into a certain faction. However, they might be able to lock the servers once the ratios reaches a certain point (3:1 for example). I don't know, just worried that it's going to cause some issues for people.

I guess they will have to see what happens after launch. I know some other games have offered exp boost, free faction transfer or some type of other incentives to switch because the ratios wind up being 15:1.

Yeah, I guess they could do that...only problem I see is if my main character is a republic on star wars server 1...and my wife or friend wants to join to play me like 5 months later...they can't join my server on my faction with me....that would suck...

That's how it goes sometimes. I mean all the cool kids wanna play horde (errm I mean Empire) so that's how it's gonna be for a while. I played Alliance in wow and played the Rebels in SWG. So this time around I wanna play the bad guys side since I'm always a good guy. That said there are definetly going to be imbalances on most pvp servers leaning heavily on the Imperial side. That will probably lessen as the months pass but still will remain out of wack. They will have to do what Blizz did and that is lock servers, add incentives to change factions, xp boost whatever. Just how it is. Unless like someone else mentioned you want them to force you to play a certain faction. There is no magic fix for BW here and no way for them to "address" it in a meaningful way. Their priority is to get the game out and get it out in the best state it can be in. Not worry about bullshit like this at the moment.

Call it the zerg tactic or ant warfare plan. I enjoy playing as the good guys because honestly, Im a good guy in my heart, so I find it hard to even "pretend" play to be bad guys in video games. I actually feel guilty and shame when I act like a jerk in a game, its just so not me.

I'm an asshole, so it works that way too lol

I'm only going to start playing on the Sith / Empire side simply because that's what all my friends will be playing. Honestly I'm looking forward to it, but I'd probably go with the light side to buck the trend if it were just me playing alone.

Republic doesn't have Bounty Hunters. Psh.

i thought the empire was always bigger then the republic as far as the war was concern.

i always play the good guy first in rpg's, but this time around im going to be a sadistic Sith Marauder first.

my second character will be a noble Jedi Guardian.

Not unexpected in my eyes...this is going to be at least the #2 game in MMO's...Sorry GW2 fans...but it will be...

BF3 is about as huge a cross-platform title as you get... and they're saying a single-platform, subscription-based game is raking in more pre-orders than that? I am surprised on that one.

Do not underestimate the power of Star Wars fans/geeks.

Well its also kinda skewed, because almost everybody knows that you will be able to find BF3 somewhere OR can get it as a origin download the same day it releases. So no big rush to pre-order...

On the other hand SW:ToR you have to pre-order in order to play first, and get some exclusive in-game items...

I will buy both on day 1, but I only pre-ordered SW:ToR

All I know is in the first 30 days of launch they will have sold over 2 million retail copies. Maybe close to 3 million. Just my guess.

lol can't wait to hop and see a shitload of lightsabers, wonder how many servers will be available through all time zones
