Post your "rate my cables" here

i was saying what cables in the sense that the wiring job is so good i hardly see any

Not the most revealing of photos I know, but my cable fu was strong on this one, haha!
I know it's not the best out there by far, but for my patience and time limitations I am pleased with the results. =)

I think your cable fu is working properly. Congrats on the new rig.

HAHA! Thank you, I appreciate that!
I spent just a little over an hour wiring it up... I probably could have made a few of the wires disappear better, but I am happy with it.

Gotta get me some SSD's next! :)

Thanks again. :D

@ TooBooKoo: haha @ the censoring of your photos haha

nice compy

I love the posts I have seen so far. I have not viewed all 495 pages of them but so far I like what I have seen. :)

Here is the cable management on my current Rig.

WIP.jpg

Since my case did not come with cable management holes I had to make my own. I took a circular drill bit and drilled holes behind the motherboard tray (after marking the location of the pilot holes with painter's tape). In order to drill I had to place my case on some 2x4s so I could drill straight down. Once done I took a filer to smooth off the edges then vacuumed the case out. Afterwards I outfitted the holes with 1" rubber grommets. (these can be found practically any hardware store)

By doing this I was able to fish the connector cables underneath allowing them to just disappear behind the motherboard.

I have ideas for further improvement but that will have to wait until my next build. However for the time being I am fairly happy.

Any suggestions?

post some uncesored pics ;-)

Haha... I would have no problem doing that... mods probably wouldn't dig that much though! :p

You can see plenty of T&A (including these wall pics) and electronics, watches from Omega to G Shocks, Guns, Knives, Headphones, and just a little of everything and hear me rambling on about it all over on my You Tube channel, haha!

NICE! Extremely nice cable management especially considering it is in the case with no cable management holes.

Might seem like a silly question, but is it better to install the components then try and tidy the cables or vice versa? I want to do cable management when I do my first build and I'm probably going to get a Corsair 400R or CM 690 II Advanced. Any links/tips/help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well I would say to some degree it depends on the case you're using, but I will run down how I go about it most of the time... maybe that can help a bit.

I really like cases where the power supply is on the bottom under the motherboard... so I usually install the power supply first, then start looking at my options. I try to visualize it and get an idea in my mind of what I want the end result to look like... just imagine all your components and how it would look you know. Then I try to route the cables that need to plug into the motherboard where they would need to go. Some of them, like the 8 pin power line, I would route behind the motherboard or motherboard tray and hide it and bring it up and over the top of the motherboard to plug in. Then you have the 24 pin power... this one doesn't want to play nice sometimes since it's so thick and not as easy to bend and hide how you want. So what I do, and many others as well, is instead of trying to hide it good... just make it look good! I've done this by sleeving each of the 24 wires individually, or sometimes just make it curl a bit to give it a little style, haha! Just be creative if you can't hide every wire... I have seen wiring jobs where a good amount of wires are visible but the way they were done makes it look great! Imagination is your friend in this case. :D
You'll need to hook up your front panel wires to the motherboard too (power switch, LED's, etc. and USB... you know, all that. I usually save these for last though since they're mostly flexible and fairly easy to work with... and for some reason I always end up pulling those little connectors off of the headers when I hook these up first, LOL!
You'll have to wire up your HDD's and optical drive (if using one)... most hard drives these days are SATA and I would use a SATA optical drive too... SATA is just cleaner. I remember the days of those big fat round HDD and optical cables, haha, those were a nightmare to hide at times!
I usually try to route the SATA cables behind the 5.25" drive bays (depends on the case though of course) and angled SATA connectors on the HDD/optical end can really help in some cases too.
Of course you have some fans to wire up, either to the motherboard headers or to the power supply. What I do for fan wires that are close to the motherboard, but have a longer cable is... I wrap the wire around a pencil for a bit and warm it up (with a lighter for just a second). This will create a nice little coiled wire that will not hang loosely and get caught in fans, etc... plus I like how it looks! :p Of course if you really want to get serious with it, then you can shorten the wires for your fans by cutting them in half and removing what you don't need... then splice them back together and sleeve them. I do this on occasion for that really finished look.
Just in case you don't know it... zip ties are your absolute best of all best friends when it comes to cable management... they really are a Godsend! I prefer the little skinny ones, like 4" or so. If your case is black inside then get black ties... if it's silver then white ones can help things blend in if they're going to be visible. Remember, it's all about how things look, not necessarily that everything is hidden completely. A good presentation either way is key here.
You will also most likely have some unused power supply wires too (unless it's modular). You can hide these (with zip ties and some patience) behind many motherboard trays these days. I like to use a little electrical tape on the ends of the power wires that aren't being used too, but mostly because I'm paranoid, LOL! :p But can't hurt if you're cramming a bunch of power wires together... they might not always want to play nice with each other you know, and the results could be shocking! LMAO, sorry... that was corny I know! :p

Most of all though... have a lot of fun building your new rig and don't get so excited to get your rig powered up and OS installed, etc. that you forget to enjoy the build process! Take your time... sit down in the floor (or wherever) and start planning your build... the more you put into it before you hit that power switch, the happier you will be when you look over, away from your monitor, and see that thing of beauty you created running nice and looking good! :)

So have fun... and good luck... oh and be sure to show us when you're done! :)

Hope this helps some.

*edit*
I forgot to mention graphics cards... well their power wires are also often hard to hide because of where the GPU is located in most cases. These are an example of some wires you might want to make look good as opposed to hiding, that's how I do it anyway.

I ordered a Corsair 650D about a month ago and finally had a chance to move all my components over:

I think I did a decent job. For a good laugh, here is what the cabling looked like in the old case (an Antec 900):

----------

Just finished my first build.
Have put a lot of effort into keeping the cables around the back, however there are a few which I hope to tuck away or even sleave a little later on.
(Notice the crappy blue sleeving? 100% mine)

Question:
Any ideas how I can run that cathode switch dangling on the right, around and out the back (perhaps to the watercooling holes?):

Atmo its all stashed in the middle optical/hdd bay:

There isn't much space (as its an ATX case with an EATX board in it...):

The bundled cable (whatever thats called) is what I need to find an extension to me thinks...

nice setup, but dang do those huge cpu coolers take up lots of space

Yah, I really didn’t think it would be THAT big… still, it does the job.

I think he needs a new case and liquid cooling :) lol

Haha, if you ever see a reasonably priced Lian Li full tower with a window, let us know ;D

As for water cooling, anything you know of that’s small enough to fit into the PC-P50WB?

It would be cool to add, but space/price/and me being a chicken are mostly what prevent me from taking up the liquid.

@Raging_Pickle: I'm sure it works great, must dissapate a huge amount of heat. It's a nice setup too btw

My Antec 900 was getting too messy and couldn't hold anymore hardware so I decided to buy the Corsair 650D. This was my first attempt at cable management so let me know what you guys think.

The hardest part is trying to hide the nonmodular power supply cables which I'm still working on.

Looks much better. I just graduated from a 900 as well, and the difference is huge. For yours, I would get a piece of black something and just put it in the hole where you can see all of those PSU cables.
Shoot, a decent piece pf matte black cardboard cut to fit and taped in place would look nice.

Oh, and maybe spend some time routing the cables in the back, as opposed to them being loose all over. Might make things easier.

Whats up with the cpu fan blowing the wrong way?

Good catch. With the 900 setup I went with, the AC7 worked better pushing air to the front, however now that I changed cases you've reminded me to reverse the heatsink. Thanks.

love seeing pics like this.
most modern cases have decent cable management features thus not hard to get a clean looking MB bay.
the backside of the MB tray is where the 'money-shots' are. getting that sorted, well that's something.
pics like the one above, the creeper vine / vomited spaghetti, just illustrates how much of a challenge it is.
