I'm going to be getting a 1440p monitor soon, and I'm thinking my single GTX 580 1.5gb might not be enough to satisfy me. Should I buy a 2nd one or sell it and get something like 2x 6950's? What would be the most economical way for me to enjoy upcoming games at 1440p?

Thanks.

You have not tested your current GPU yet so don't bother doing anything. Also, "upcoming games" should not be a problem since they still don't exist.

this. I would think your current setup should do ok for current games... Wait and see...

You will need more gpu memory if anything. Wait for the refresh unless you want to go with the current 2gb + model gpus.

I'm at 1600p and my 2 GTX580's are just right, for the most part. There's still a few games I cannot max out completely. If it were me, I'd still have GTX580 SLi - even for 1440p. I had 2 570's before and they weren't enough, even OC'd, for my 30.

i run that res and use 2 6950s unlocked. you need the processing power of 2 gpu's bare min to get any decent FPS at that res. also vram is an issue, and 2gb is a sweet spot. imo either 2x 69xx, a 6990 or sli 580 3GB is what you want to do. based on price, the 6950s will give you best bang for buck.

you might be okay with 1.5gb 580s, but as more demanding titles come out, im sure they will become a bit of an issue. unless you are okay with turning down AA so you dont run into vram issues

get the monitor, play your games and THEN decide for yourself if your 580 can get the job done.

maybe a single 580 with 3GB of ram Oc'd a lot might do the trick, tell us what happens when u run a game with ur current setup at 1440p

At this resolution, crossfire/sli is a must. Two 6950's would probably be the best choice here if you're concerned about money, but if you're willing to wait, I'd wait and see what AMD can bring to the table with their 7xxx series. As for getting a 2nd 580 versus selling it and getting two 6950's, you'd have to do the math to see which is the cheaper solution. Two gtx 580's should outperform two 6950's in most/all games.

Also, cannondale06 makes a good point. Get the monitor first and then see if the frame rates are still acceptable in your eyes. What may not be acceptable to others may be acceptable to you when it comes to frame rates. I personally need as much power as possible, as I'd like to be able to sustain 60 fps in all my games at near/max settings.

Another question I had was is it always true that your CPU becomes less and less important the higher your resolution? I'm concerned my 1090T might not me enough.
