It’s looking more likely Electronic Arts is throwing some cold water on Steam. Rumors have been circulating about the PC version of Battlefield 3 would not be available on Steam and according to a new report from Baird, a research firm, confirms that rumor. Battlefield 3 will be distributed through other channels such as games retailer GameStop.

Earlier this month a page on the Battlefield 3 web site posted up a list of retailers that would sell the PC download version but Steam, by far the biggest provider of such games, was not among those listed.

they cant wait forever... Maybe if they just want to wait till 2 weeks have passed or so. I'd buy it on steam then

i prfer steam but i have no issues with downloading it on origin. people that only buy stuff on steam or poo poo heads.

every game i own is on steam. ill be very disapointed if i cannot get this on steam.

I'll buy a boxed copy if I must, but I think EA is making a major mistake not putting this on Steam. Sure they want to pimp out Origin...but at what cost? I still think EA will put the game on there very late, if their recent game Alice is worth an indicator.

Meh..

I like Steam as its DRM is fairly unobtrusive, and once installed is there for all my games.

I don't like the concept of having games from all sorts of sources each with their own DRM running on my game that may or may not use signification system resources or open up security holes...

Let's just say that a titel not being on steam doesn't mean that I won't buy it... It' just means that I'll only buy it if its a title I REALLY want, whereas on Steam I'll occasionally browse and buy stuff, even if it wasn't a huge title I was planning on buying anyway...

I've often bought titles elsewhere (like from THQ) only to get the key and enter it straight into steam and download it that way...

damn, and I was sooo looking to pick this up on the first available steam sale.

<- - - Doesn't buy at release

Due to Steam's features I would prefer to get it on there, so I'll have to review Origin's features and restrictions before I decide if I'll use their service.

I didn't have a problem with EADM when I purchased BF2 again, as I lost my original box set when we moved, and I won't care again if I have to go through Origin. Steam isn't the end-all, be-all to me.

Same here. I love steam and how it is implemented.

This.
I prefer steam, not for any particular love of valve, but because steam has always worked for me, it's where all my games are, and it has never done anything that makes me mistrust the service. Since CS 1.5b, it has been flawless for me.

That being said, EA/Origin has a long way to go before it garners that much from me. Pulling its games from Steam and offering Alice the way it did does not help their cause. They need to convince me that Origin has something that Steam does not. And their games alone will not cut it.

All of you saying you have no problems with Orgin, please remember this is EA who famously likes to shut down servers and stop distributing files after a couple years. I will not support EA and its attempts to start its own Digital Distribution service.

With BF2 the way EADM worked was just that, a download manager. It allowed me download install and setup my email/pw that was linked to my copy. After that it had no part in my gaming and wasn't needed to run BF2. If Origin/BF3 is any different, I'll just buy a retail box, if it isn't, otherwise, it won't affect my indifference to not having Steam support.

First to post I could care less. But I know the Steamers are gonna be pissed. ;)

+1 The people who do to buy from other sources aren't concerned.
I only buy games from Steam during their twice a year mega sale. Any other time I can find better prices elsewhere.

Am Dissapoint.

That pretty much sums it up. I would prefer to buy it on steam, but I will purchase it from EA if I am forced to.

Here comes the days where each individual publisher has there own bloatware downloader and friends list. Wohoo.

EA's just shooting themselves in the foot. They're losing out to millions of Steam customers.

OH MAN! SRSLY!! OMG! I.... oh.. wait... EA? Yea nvm I stopped buying anything from EA along time ago.

Oh, and the whole Crysis 2 thing. Yea, they just have not instilled much confidence recently...

It's not about it not being on Steam. It's about the stupid proliferation of services, each with its own set of features, friends, and whatever else.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm tired of being asked to adopt an amazing new service, regardless of who it comes from. I just like to have all my stuff neatly organized -- for me, that means all in one place.

Same reason I'm not interested in any new social network from Microsoft. One is enough.

I'll be buying from D2D. I'm not going to support Origin because I literally hate EA. It pains me to buy EA games at all because I know the lion's share of the money goes to EA, not the developers. So there's no way am I going fill their coffers with whatever portion would normally go to another company like Valve (Steam) or IGN (Direct2Drive).

Not that I think steam is the most holy or anything, but if it doesn't come to steam then I probably won't be buying it.

I use steam for ALL my games, and it is extremely convenient. Any game that doesn't come to Steam...I don't buy. Oh well, I hope it does.

EA doesn't make games, they pay talented companies to make games for them. Thats the only reason I can justify spending money on BF3 (aside from it being an awesome game).

i thought this was announced a while ago?
and if you can still integrate bf3 into steam after you buy it, then i couldnt careless

Ill be buying retail. I have 170 games on steam and I dont care if it is on steam or not.

I think that's the point. Like Crysis 2 retail could not be integrated into steam.

Don't mind if I can get just a disc version with no bs drm or anything, if it requires origin I'll pass and get it for xbox at something around 30$ price tag.

I use Steam, D2D, Origin and Impulse. I'd much rather have multiple distributors than only one. It's not like I don't have four browsers and four of most everything else already anyway.

Really? That seems counter-intuitive to me. What benefit do you see in multiple platforms? (No matter how I write this it sounds petulant to me, so don't take it that way, I'm zctually curious)
