Netflix Hikes Prices, Adds DVD-Only Plan

Usenet=paid "premium" file sharing (aka pirating) network.

He's basically telling the world he pirates movies.

I think most people here are aware of what Usenet is. The question is: who the heck is only $6/month? And does that include SSL encryption?

Oops, misread "who" for "what". Thought he was asking what Usenet is.

256 bit SSL, US and Europe based servers, 50 connection limit.

Damn it damn it damn it.. I just started using the rental+ streaming to keep my bills just a little lower. What greedy assholes.

That's true but it's better than broadcast and I'm not paying for high def cable. The truth is it's plenty good for most people. Even with the high adoption rate of HD tvs in homes these days 90% of the signals going into them are not HD. People just don't care. All they know is they want the biggest flat screen they can afford.

Well 90% of the titles streaming can be had on DVD, I'll stay with that.
I'll use Redbox to supplement for more current releases.

I have a big problem with paying a high price, for inferior quailty and services.

With AT&T and Comcast putting caps on monthly broadband usage, the streaming will add up fast for most users of such services. Coincidence about hike? Maybe. These guys are usually all in 'bed' with each other...despite trying to look like competitors. It keeps the cost for all of them artificially high.

So ISPs place bandwidth caps to make netflix less cost effective and netflix counters with a huge hike in prices 0.o?

Way to miss the point. Cable Co's want Netflix out of the way altogether (whether brought submissively into the fold, or put out of business) since they take money from those who (the cable co's contend) would otherwise be paying for cable. So they're twice pissed at any entity like Netflix. "You're stealing our paying customers, and doing it "for free" on our bandwidth too?" [satellite co's don't care *nearly* as much due to the nature of most cable co's providing high speed internet.]

It's just that Netflix has the biggest core group, and if they (collectively) can send a msg to the largest group/business model, then don't you believe the smaller hopefuls won't see the bigger threat??

Netflix is being forced to adjust their prices thanks to the greedy movie industry fucks.
Short and simple, this is all just another concerted effort to keep the masses within the reigns.

The only answer to all of it is to let the movie (and music) industry fall flat on it's face.

To me, the movie industry is dead anyways what with so much rehashed crap coming out just for the temporary "wow" factor:

IE: *any* 3d movie, and most of the CGI based: GI Joe, x-men, transformers, spiderman, batman, I mean seriously...there's not been NEARLY the ratio of new "IP" or decent intelligent writing consistently released for at LEAST a decade (if not two). And what's to look forward to this summer? Smurfs.

My money will continue to go to the second hand shops. Or alternative means.
$35 dollars for 2 people for a fucking 3d movie? kiss my ass.
$12+ for a single new release movie? kiss it again.
$40+ for television shows (cable) that have a composite IQ base target of 60. kiss the starfish.

$40 + $10/month for internet and netflix to not have to wade through the BS, and go straight to something worth watching...done!

Well that's confirmation about the old streaming plan anyway.

Still like to confirm the new plan though.

They need to update their info, cause it says on their site:

Some membership plans allow you to watch simultaneously on more than one personal computer or Netflix-ready device. If you are on the Watch Instantly Unlimited plan or the 1-disc-out-at-a-time plan, you may watch only one device at a time. If you are on the 2-discs-out-at-a-time plan, you may watch on up to two devices at a time. Members on the 3-disc plan can watch on up to three devices. The maximum is four devices -- available for members on the 4-or-greater-discs-out-at-a-time plan.

Your account can have up to six unique authorized devices activated (and associated with it) at any given time, including personal computers and Netflix-ready devices. For example, if you're on the 1-disc plan, you can have up to six devices associated with your account, but you can only watch one of them at a time. If you're on the 2-disc plan, you can have up to six devices activated but can only watch two of them at the same time.

FUDGE!! Ill send then am email and will let you know.

The comments on this are really telling, Netflix has spoiled most of you rotten with impossibly cheap service.

Indeed. The FACT that it's priced what it is (currently) and that they are still making a profit!!! :D

It's the movie industry and cable companies that are crying. Now that the truth is out of the bag, it's hurting their argument positions of "how much money" they're "losing".

The fact is, that it IS in fact a very profitable business model, even *more so*, if Netflix went without dvd's and just did streaming. Customers are appreciative of this, and that's why it's paid off.

The only thing is, now the MPAA and cable co's are trying to rectify their prior thinking of "this will never take off" by enacting caps, throttling, pricing hikes...anything they can to put the genie back in the bottle. The proof is there plain to see IF you're willing to face the truth.

Ouch. I was already angry at the last increase and dropped from 3 rentals to 2 (plus blueray option). My internet connection at home is too slow to stream at decent quality. I think this time I will just cancel altogether and just use Redbox.

This year Netflix is coming to Brazil, and it won't look like it'd be any cheaper than the service you're paying. Even tough it's price raised, it's still a good deal, at least for me.

That is elitist garbage. People care about the quality of their content. Enough people care to build a billion dollar home entertainment business.

The proliferation and relative low cost of DVDs made many average consumers into collectors and ushered many of them into the enthusiast crowd. These people may not be able to tell the difference if they have a 40" TV sitting 15' away but they can tell on a 60" at 10' away.

Besides your statistics are bullshit - 90% of signals are not SD anymore.

You're right, my statistics were bullshit. What I said is still true. The VAST majority of content is still SD and that's just a fact.
