Best Buy Holding Disabled Girl's Laptop Hostage

//ignore news of a Best Buy being burnt down soon, nothing to see here, move along....

Wow this is fucking disgusting. I mean working for BB I didn't know you are forced to follow their low life practise.

Despicable. Rotten. Under-handed. <== those are the polite words.

I work there, and I hate that place with a passion... It's all about knowing people or drinking with managers to get promoted. Too many incompetent people work there and the company is believe it or not in fight for it's survival... Stores are starting to close down, you guys are first to know the news. Soon it will be gone.

The condition of the customer is irrelevant. According to the story a customer is getting screwed and that's all that really matters here.

I'm sorry, I just don't believe the store is refusing to honor a warranty because the warranty expired while the computer was in their possession.

There's so much stupid stuff in that complaint. No Best Buy tech would ask for a number that's on the computer in their possession. Is this computer under HP's warranty or the Best Buy's warranty? Is the $170 to replace a bad AC adapter that was brought in after the warranty expired? How is the woman's deafness relevant?

I'd like to see BB's side before I grab a rope.

And people wonder why I say I hate to support Best Buy. I used to work in a computer repair store. One thing I can say is that the fees will be far in excess of the work done, just like Staples. Good bye Best Buy. I'll use Microcenter. Most of their staff suck, but the have better selections.

Though I'm with you on the first part of your post in that I don't believe we are getting the full story here, can I ask what part of the United States you live in where this type of talk is acceptable?

i used to buy everything from best buy then i became disabled and now its hard for me to leave the house im always on my pc now i just order everything from amazon, man do i love amazon

but i wont feel bad if these ass holes ever go under always thought there geek squad was a stupid idea

Oh geez... as word of this begins to spread, like so many other recent customer service nightmares, I predict:

- Best Buy will make a public apology
- the girl will get a brand new laptop for her troubles
- Best Buy will still take a massive hit for it in the public view (as they should)
- people will forget about this next week

Moving on...

this is the reason why best buy just keeps doing it again and seldom do anything to improve anything, they know in a few months people will just forget about it

Browse "The Consumerist" website for a mile long list of stories of people BB has been screwing and lying to for years.

http://consumerist.com/company/best-buy/

(Scroll down and down and down for stories, personally I love the one where the customer catches BB breaking the law and they ban him from the store in retaliation).

I can easily believe they would do something like this.

Sooner or later, all these big franchise stores collapse under they own weight, and their greed. It will be particularly satisfying when it's BB's turn to go under.

hahaha.

she broke both rules of laptop ownership.

1. never buy HP pavilions.
2. never let Retard Squad touch your shit.

if her laptop was still under warranty, why the fuck did she give it to best buy, rather than sending it to HP in the first place?

Did you read the article? The first line clearly states "My sister bought a computer from Best Buy and purchased their $300 warranty."

This is very shady on the Best Buy and Geek Squad. Hope the girl gets a new FREE laptop for her troubles from BB.

Yeah, that was my thought exactly, the whole "my poor invalid sister" part of the story is meaningless and simply put in to play on people's sympathies and makes me question the rest of the story as well since when people lead off with something like that they are often looking to get something, which they aren't entitled to, for nothing.

for the few people that actually read the article:

does it not sound like her laptop battery died and $170 is the cost of a replacement ?

if that is the case, are batteries normally covered under warranty ?

Best Buy is the scum of the earth. Other horrible chains have fallen and so will Best Buy in due time.

FailBuy at their usual money making shenanigans once again. If I had a dollar for every time they shaft customers...

Worst buy strikes again, what kinda douche does this stuff? man no wonder they got a crappy rep!

Fuck Geek Squad. I returned a monitor to Best Buy last month and a colonoscopy without lube would have been been more pleasant.

I can't believe I said that. "You guys make think..." That should be, "You guys may think..." I don't know how acceptable bad grammar is, but it's common.

If this is indeed true...then BestBuy has to be the most stupid company I've seen in a long time. The only outcome to be had in this story is negative publicity. That'll cost them more than just a few laptops in sales from customers nationwide. It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to see where that decision will take them. Not too smart.

Oh geez... as word of this begins to spread, like so many other recent customer service nightmares, I predict:

- Best Buy will make a half-hearted public apology
- the girl will get a low-end refurb laptop for her troubles
- Best Buy will still take a massive hit for it in the public view (as they should)
- people will forget about this next week

Some of you people are idiots.

If you took the time to read Best Buys Black Tie Warranty terms and conditions, you would find:

http://www.geeksquad.com/uploadedFi...s/black_tie/1941-0230921-terms-conditions.pdf

1. They cover one battery replacement on a laptop. Since there is nothing in the story to suggest it has been replaced before, Best Buy should honor this if it is a battery issue (which I doubt).

2. They do cover the AC adapter included with a laptop. As per the above document:
Repair or replacement, at our sole discretion, of
chargers, cradles, and accessories that were included with your product at the time of purchase,
these products may be mailed to you and are
limited to one like item per Plan term.

Its pretty clear that whatever they "repaired" should be covered under their warranty and some jackass has decided that as far as he is concerned the warranty period has expired and wants to charge them full price. Its bull fucking shit.

This is the reason I don't buy extended warranties on just about anything. I will do the GAP coverage on a car and perhaps the extra warranty depending on the circumstances and thats just because I don't want some asshole to run a red light and fuck my shit up and leave me out to dry. But on consumer electronics? Fuck them. Its a cash grab and nothing more. I worked retail for years back in the day and sold those stupid warranties for several companies and 9 times out of 10 they weren't worth the paper they were written on.

Did you read the article? The first line clearly states "My sister bought a computer from Best Buy and purchased their $300 warranty."

The letter is written by someone mentally confused. Anyway, It says "them telling her it is an HP issue." Best Buy wouldn't say this unless it was under the manufacturer's warranty. The author of the letter appears totally clueless as to want warranty it's under and doesn't give us the age of the computer so we can figure it out, ourselves. The website that posts the letter responds to the letter with "Jenni's mother might have also had better luck... sending the computer directly to HP for fixing", which means they thought it was under the manufacturer's warranty.

Store warranties don't cover what manufacturer warranties cover.

Does a BB extended warranty really cost $300? Someone who'd pay that much for an extended warranty needs their head examined. That's most of the way toward a new replacement that's better than the original.

This is very shady on the Best Buy and Geek Squad. Hope the girl gets a new FREE laptop for her troubles from BB.

No, it's not shady of BB. The complaint is shady.

(*Disclosure: I don't work for BB, heaven help me if I did) This is sadly what can happen when you have a middleman involved, in this case Worst Buy. I think it's pretty chicken shit for both companies to point the finger at the other over whose issue it is. Very immature of both companies and about as unprofessional as it gets. This alone is the reason I would never ever buy a computer at BB or any large chain store.

I hope both companies pull the sticks out of their ass and fix this issue for her. I'd be on phone to a lawyer as well.

I don't even go "window shopping" at Best Buy anymore, not worth my time to be anywhere near that shit-hole of a business.

Bad PR for BB, shame on them for being idiots.

I took my business away from them long time ago, glad I did, there
bastards for doing this.

1) I think everyone who is a member of [H] is Saavy enough to know that BB is overpriced and full of less than knowledgeable employees. I'll go there in a pinch and pay the markup if i need something in a hurry, but i think like the rest of you, it's newegg, amazon, mwave, etc...

2) I also hope everyone realizes that despite how ridiculous this story is, it isn't really indicative of the company BestBuy, but more so one store, or more specifically a few employees.

3) And lastly, I highly doubt we've gotten the full story here. I'm sure it's just as moronic on the customer's end as well, probably more so, but we just haven't gotten that side.

A. Doesn't matter if it was under Best Buy's or HP's warranty. Why would they hold onto the laptop for 3 months anyway? If the warranty did run out during their possession of the laptop, then it's Best Buy's fault, and they should honor a free repair.
B. Best Buy probably didn't know the laptop belonged to a disabled girl. Her sister probably dropped it off. Why is it relevant? Cause it makes Best Buy look more like the scum they are. Also, being deaf, her only source to the outside world is her laptop. Holding for 3 months was a dick move.
C. Regardless of Best Buy's story, they should give her the top of the line laptop they have. A Mac would be perfect. The guy who handled the situation should be fired, out of a canon.

I'm lucky, I live near a Microcenter. Way better store then BestBuy, and sometimes even has competative prices to Newegg.

Who hired those employee's? Who hired the guy that hired those employee's? Who let this story go so far to the point where it's on the news?

BEST BUY

If the story is right, then they had the laptop for 3 months and got nothing done. The warranty ran out and they won't help the girl out. What details are we missing that could make Best Buy look any less worse?

This is a pathetic story--just too sad for words. It does, however, highlight in bold letters precisely why it is that I will never of my own volition buy a laptop computer, of any description, from anyone. For more than 25 years I have had no problem sticking to this philosophy and think I have been much, much happier as a result.

With a desktop of even middling quality, should something go wrong, I can not only diagnose the problem myself, but I can actually repair the problem myself using parts bought right off retail store shelves--and most of the time in even doing just that the replacement part will be superior to the malfunctioning part and cost less than the original did, too. So, I can not only repair my own property, I can upgrade it at the same time. And, I can save substantial amounts of $$$ in the process. Not to mention saving gobs and gobs of time, too.

You'd think this would be a no-brainer, wouldn't you? Surprisingly, though, people actually talk themselves into buying laptops even when they could easily get along without one (I cannot fathom why.) If my company buys one for me--great--because keeping it repaired and functioning is their problem, not mine, and I will not permit them to make it my problem, either. I simply don't have time to wait weeks or months between laptop repairs (sent back to their OEMs because they cannot be repaired locally) only to discover at the very end of the torturous process that *I* actually *owe them money* for their taking an epoch to repair a laptop that was fully under warranty when I sent it back to them for warranty repair. Life is too short for this BS. If you can possibly get by without doing it--don't buy a laptop. Ever.

Speaking of upgrades--in the laptop world, if you want to significantly upgrade your hardware it's buy the new and toss out the old (sell it for pennies on the $, give it away, etc.)

Having made an initially wise choice when purchasing your desktop, however, can result in multiple years of easy and comparatively very inexpensive hardware upgrades, meaning that you can have that "brand new computer" every year or two if you so desire, and you can have it for pennies on the dollar compared to the cost of a comparably equipped brand new OEM box. The further icing on the cake here, as if there needed to be more, is that you get the privilege of hand-picking every single hardware & software component that goes into your box, along with every single warranty for every single one of those components! Number of laptop or desktop OEMs who let you do that when you buy your next box from them? 0. Absolute 0.
