Verizon Unlimited Data to end on 7/7

So is there any way to use an unlocked phone on Virgin or do you have to use one of their phones?

edit: I found on VM's site that you have to use one of their phones. New question: I'm currently on an original Droid (i.e. 3G speeds), if I buy a LTE/4G phone off contract will I still be able to use my unlimited data plan at 4G speeds?

According to the info being reported now yes but you will have to get it activated as a 4G device I think

Cool thx. I guess the thing to do (since my plan is up for upgrade) is to wait until the last possible minute to decide if I should upgrade to a 4G device so I can lock in the unlimited data plan..

from what they said you can be under contract with unlimited data on a 3G device already and later even after the switch you can upgrade your handset to a 4G one and the unlimited data plan will still be honored on your new 4G device

Thank god I just got my Dinc 2 with unlimited data yesterday and I should have the phone either today or Monday.

If true im glad I got my wife and I a thunderbolt a month ago. Woot!

apparently you could have had any old 3G device with unlimited data and could have upgraded to 4G devices after this date and still have kept unlimited data

The annoying part for me, is I've spent the last 3 days looking at all the other options, and because of employee discounts that I get at Verizon (25%) versus Sprint/ATT (15%), it's actually exactly the same cost as my staying with Big Red, getting a Smartphone, and getting unlimited data, as it would be to switch to any other provider. The exception would be if other people on my account wanted smartphones/texts, but none of them do.

That figures, I really want to tell verizon to fuck off, but $/mo if I want a smartphone, I'm best to stay with them, but only because they give my work a good discount. Hilarious IMO

I hope this is true. I was debating between the thunderbolt, charge, and iphone and was having a hard time deciding on which one to get. I do live in a 4G area (Fort Lee, NJ area so close to NYC), but doubt I'd get much use out of 4G and coverage in general is spotty in my house or so it seems. As for the iphone, I considered it cause of ease of use, high resale value in the event I sold it, and better integration with my other apple products, and form factor. Just when I thought I decided on one of the phones, the incredible 2 became really appealing in its slightly smaller form factor than the thunderbolt, better battery life, and lack of potential use of 4G network (uses will likely be calls, texts, occasional web browsing, gps). Will have to test out the phones for longer durations tomorrow to decide!

there's an awful lot of evidence to support it even if it is unofficial

Hey it's my first Android phone and I've lived without a data plan until now, so I should be fine with 3G :D.

I wonder how long people can continue with the unlimited data they are grandfathered into, especially for customers like myself who would buy phones off contract to keep the plan. They'll find a way to eventually get us off of it and into this shit tiered pricing.

Probably 4-6 years. When Sprint killed it's SERO plans, it waited around 2 years to start forcing smartphone users into a slightly higher-priced plan. We went from $35 to $55 - Sprints basic current plan iirc is $79, so I suspect in 2 more years they will bump price again so people say "Well for just $5 more I can get unlimited everything, I think I'll do that" Likely VZW will be doing the same.

I've been with virgin mobile for the past year and a half. There's been multiple times when I've wanted to switch to verizon for an android, (best around my area) but couldn't ever justify spending $60+ more a month just to use a better phone. Started thinking about doing it within the last 2 weeks now that I have a better income, but now I definitely won't be.

US Cellular is very good around here, very nice priced plans usually, they have a 5GB cap though. It's $0.25 per MB over that. Not sure how that compares to the others really, but if any of you are thinking of jumping ship and have one in your area, I'd consider them an alternative I guess.

wow great news, my unlimited 3g (have an htc inc2) will be grandfathered into unlimited 4g once I make the jump a few years down the line.

Picked up a droid charge, It seems like it's the best of the (3) 4g phones available on Verizon. It should be nice dropping less calls when I'm in farmland Illinois and getting 4g speeds when I'm in LTE Chicago and the burbs'. I do get about 4 down and 1 up at home on the Iphone 4 but going any where slightly rural the speeds quickly fall and there is barely any Edge service. Also couldn't pass up getting grandfathered LTE unlimited for next years iphone which should be LTE, I would be surprised if this years does have LTE.

I did the same. Got the Droid Charge only because the resale value is the highest (although I think I like the Thunderbolt a little better except for the battery life).

good thing sprint still believes in unlimited data.

Sprint has no choice. Too bad they suck in my area. Anyway, got the DInc2 for my daughter yesterday. All 4 of us are on smartphones with unlimited data.

Got the iPhone 4 with my renewal contract. I liked my android and google management better. Only thing different is the device is user friendly for people who want others to do it for them. Otherwise, miss my android already but I'm not sold on 4G at the moment and 3G was enough for my browsing/youtube/netflix activities.

My motorola droid was running like a champ. Trying to see if I can sell it.

I would not want your monthly bill on data alone.

I wonder when/if carriers will start implementing shared data. With the way the market is going, people won't be able to afford multiple data plans.

I could have sworn I'd heard rumors of this being implemented with VZW. When? I have no idea? Sources? My head?:(

I don't enjoy paying what I pay for wireless service. Im my area, it's Verizon or AT&T. They are basically one in the same.

It's confirmed. Tiered data starts this Thursday (7th).

Sprint has no choice.

I am not sure about that considering that even t-mobile has implemented data caps. I just hope my grandfathered unlimited data card which is my main internet connection never gets affected by data caps.

I`m stuck here.

My verizon upgrade time isnt until October, and switching providers isn`t an option. I`d use a smartphone for email, surfing, pandora, and probably youtube. Will the 2GB limit hurt me? Should I break my upgrade cycle today and get a smartphone now for the unlimited data?

If yes, I`ll look through the recommendations in this forum for the right phone.

Minus the youtubing (because 3G just doesn't seem to buffer the videos fast enough) I use my phone for the exact same things. HTC DINc2. I rarely approach the 2GB mark. So you should be good. Recently though, I've started using the Photobucket app to upload photos to the interwebs for

I would call Verizon to see if you can get an early upgrade. I really think unlimited data is worth getting. Even if you don't use a ton of data today, you have to consider how much your usage will increase in a few years when streaming video and cloud services become more ubiquitous.

so im hearing different stories on existing customers vs new. im reading in a lot of places that existing customers can keep unlimited when they upgrade after the 7th but then i also heard that if existing upgrades then they dont keep there unlimited? whats the confirmed plan?

Sounds about right, some months I go over, some months I am under that 2Gb mark. What would make it much better is if they allowed you to "rollover" your unused data now that they are keeping score....lets keep score....If I use 1Gb last month and 3Gb this month and 2Gb next....were even. Or just say it's 24Gb annual average. But don't start tacking on fees when I use 3Gb in a month when I used less on previous months.....that's just dirty. Alas I have the unlimited plans so I'm not worried. Heck, all day at work and at home I am on WiFi anyways.....

if you currently have a smart phone with VZW you should be fine if you wait a bit longer:
http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/05/veriz...m-unlimited-to-tiered-data-plans-on-july-7th/

The tiered data will currently only be used with new customers

On Tuesday, I spoke with a Verizon rep who assured me current $30/month unlimited customers are grandfathered. Assuming she was correct, I just have to hope they get some good new phones like the GS2, Nexus 4, iPhone 5 later this year.
