Are we taking bets to see how fast Amazon, and other companies, pull out of California?

The measure says that any retailer who "through a subsidiary" has any "place of business" in California must collect sales taxes. And--surprise!--Amazon has two subsidiaries in California: A9, in Palo Alto, which works on search technology, and Cupertino-based Lab126, which designed the Kindle and is rumored to be working on much more.

I'm generally supportive of states going after tax dodging internet sales companies, but this particular piece of legislation seems to be going a little bit too far.

They should be collecting sales tax on any product sold in California, not on product designed in California but sold elsewhere...

The terminally boned, liberal utopia, the People's Republic of California cannot go bankrupt fast enough and anything idiotic like this to ACCELERATE that process is GREAT NEWS.

Eventually you run out of other people's money to spend. Driving the people actually creating jobs out of your state is brilliant.

Amazon employs a total of 16k people.

Best Buy employs a total of 180k.

Which one of these is receiving the benefit of sales tax / no sales tax? ;)

I was going to respond but takes to much effort to bother. I will simply say "Go Amazon".

Hey Amazon, there are plenty of other states in the US that will gladly welcome you with open arms :) It'd be nice to see other online retailers follow suit.

Everyone should pull out of California.

It's too bad San Diego is in California... can we pick up the city and move it elsewhere?

This post is so full of win.

San Diego isn't in CA, it's in North Mexico. As a native Californian we are taxed and taxed and taxed. If we just TOTALLY STOPPED welfare for 2 years we would have a surplus. CA has become the over taxed-welfare state of the union. Honestly looking forward to leaving after 43 years, it's just impossible to find a state with the climate of CA.

Wow california... great way to f your self over more...glad I moved. I loved SD while I live there but its shit like this that makes you ORLY?

Climate is a huge win for sure.

The hole dug here is just so incredibly deep. You have to wonder when Californians (the normal thinking ones) will just say enough is enough.

I guess when tv, gas, internet, etc. cost so much that no one can afford it is when things will begin to change and people start thinking, but once it's theres it's almost too late.

Quit whining you California woosies.

Come to NY if you want to talk about taxes.

And, for some dumb-ass reason I do pay taxes on all my Amazon purchases.

But I agree 100% with Amazon, tell the people in California to go fuck themselves.
Next law will be if you own a company and any of your relatives live in the state you have to pay taxes.

I can't wait for Barak's people to want to tax us for these things, so they can further take care of those who do not work.

Ah mercantilism, the classic race to the bottom to beggar thy neighbor.

And once Amazon gets all the states to have 0% sales tax? Sorry Oregon, we're going to North Dakota who is going to pay us $10 million per year. Oh, sorry North Dakota, now we're moving to South Carolina who will pay us $100 million per year!

Hmmm yea the only place worse than CA is NY - true story there.

I'll expand on your next law - if you own a company and any of your relatives live in the state, are born on an odd number year after 1930, are over 5' 8" tall, have a BMI over 25, and live on a street whose name is less than 5 letters or numbers long, then you pay taxes. Nothing like making the tax code longer! Now that deserves an

No they won't, they'll probably just go on welfare :D

Probably because they have a distribution center in your state.

Wont be much longer until all of our income becomes payable to the State (Fed, ST, Local). We will get vouchers for Bread and a ration of water.. Glorious days ahead comrades!

Cali never learned how to budget properly that's why they are boned

raise taxes but not curb spending, that's great fiscal common sense!

Gotta love the knee jerk "it's the liberals fault"... conservatives suck at budget making too, sure they might have a great soundbite but they don't seem to think twice about voting for something they're against as long as their community gets a little something.

Seriously, California is 12% of the country's population, tons of immigration issues, tons of people to educate, tons of people to protect, the federal government spends 78 cents for every 1 dollar it collects from the state (unlike places like New Mexico or Mississippi where paying federal taxes actually gets a 100+% return on their investment!), seriously the problems do not scale up linearly with population. Hell I'd even go so far as to say only people from Texas and maybe New York really know what it feels to have all these similar problems... and since we're talking about Texas? Pro business, no-union state? Its also facing budget issues of monumental fuckatude.

That said, this little cat and mouse game between Amazon and California is quite funny, and I am curious how it'll turn out.

Amazon needs to take some pointers from how wal-mart deals with its vendors. If you hope to do business and sell your goods at wal-mart, you better have a presence in Arkansas.

Just make everyone come to them. If they don't want to, then sorry we don't do business with you.

"have sought to attribute some of the blame for the crisis to hedge funds and other speculators stating that "institutions bailed out with public funds are exploiting the budget crisis in Greece and elsewhere"
In other words the banks got a bailout using tax payers money and now the banks are going after the people to fill the coffers that they emptied.

I'm somewhat confused. I'll use Greece as an example.
Population of Greece = 11 million
Population of USA = 310 million
Debt load of every man woman and child in Greece = 44,000 thousand
Debt load of every man woman and child in USA = 45,000 thousand
Greece has Socialized(taxpayer paid) free medical and free education.
USA has no Socialized(taxpayer paid) free medical and free education.
Economically I'm keeping this short and to the point.
Greece and the USA are bankrupt, Greece went into the hole partly by helping its citizens, free medical and education. USA went into the hole, (no free medical or free education) by helping ???? who. I read it all the time here, people in the US should not get any free handouts, so where did 14 trillion dollars go if it wasn't to help its people out, I'm assuming thats federal debt, not including state debt. Need some help understanding this different mind think.

Amazon please come to Oregon where we have no sales tax

I did, and loved the Rogue Valley. :p Just some other SoCal native douchebag made it so I'm back in sunny CA again...For now. Not pumping your own gas, and actually paying the price shown on a store tag? Not sure I ever got used to that ;). I'm not much of a drinker, but the liquor stores can piss off though.

Uncle -

It is due to growth rates. Greece has to pay something like 11% on it's debt, yet its economy is shrinking at -4.5% annualized right now. It also owes 142% of its GDP in debt.

The US currently pays about 2-3% on its debt and is growing at a similar rate. Our debt to GDP is nearly 100%.

The other issue is that Greece, as a member of the euro, has to abide by the monetary policy set for all countries. So they cannot run a loose monetary policy to help ease the pain of austerity.

You do realize up until 2010 no budget could get passed in California without support from republicans (required a 2/3 majority). Taxes hikes still require a 2/3 majority, thus, no tax hikes can occur without republican support. I'm guessing your heroes Rush, Newt, and Glenn didn't tell you that.

These are not retail outlets selling to the public. I don't see how it counts.

So the Democrats manage to threaten/bribe a couple liberal/moderate Republicans each year to pass the budget and raise taxes, yet you blame the Replublicans?

At least the Republicans stood firm this time and made the Democrats pass this all on thier own.

I live in the over taxed mess, but I still say go Amazon!

Besides dropping the affiliates, I hope Amazon moves the connected companies out of California, putting the budget even further in the hole.

Only way to fix this mess is to starve the beast.

I did 3 tours in San Diego at FLEASWTRACENPAC. The first, in 1980, was friggin' AWESOME!

The second, in 1982, was starting to suck.

The third, in 1986, graduated to full blown suckage.

Long live the Brown Bag Deli !

I blame them all. For many years. With few exceptions.

Since the RIAA and MPAA are based out of California, I say Tax those greedy bastards 1 million for each frivilous lawsuit they file, and lose.

Call it a "stick that in your pipe and smoke it" tax.

close A9... why waste money on search when you can use google or yahoo/bing? it's market share must be crap anyway.

as for kindle development... move to tx or back to washington... or heck new york since your screwed there anyway.

I fail to see a problem with this.. is this sarcasm?

Lord knows, if I got a better offer for my services in another state I wouldn't mind relocating.

Well, if companies would stop off shoring manufacturing to China, we just maybe could improve things around here.

And get a decent, reliable product at the same time.

Yep, once I finish up college I'm leaving this hell hole. I'd like to see California fall so far that Mexico absorbs it. That way it will stop pulling the rest of the country into the progressive/liberal shithole commiefornia is today

Hey Amazon, we have RTP in NC, come make some more jobs for us over here!
