Hello I need some help
I have not found any other question exactly like this and I need some help.
I am going to buy a Dell u2711 Screen with a res. of 2550x1440 and I do need another graphic card to but which should I get for that res.?

I have had a look into 6950 CF 2GB, 6970 2GB, GTX 580 1,5GB,
I am a bit of a Nvidea fanboy but now i want to use the card(s) i'm going to buy for as long as possible. I like the asus GTX 580 with the dcii cooler but will i get longer with a AMD card that has 2 gb vram? in such high resolution?

Good bye lingonpaj

i have the same monitor, i run 2 6950s unlocked in CFX. runs everything like a dream. personally at that res id never look at anything less then 2GB of vram, and 2 cores are required if you want 60fps+ in most titles. this will also give you head room for future titles that will gobble up more vram

look at the results for 2560x1600, the u2711 is similar in res at 2560x1440, so it will give you an idea of what to expect. know that you will see better performance, so you can probably run more AA

You can run 2x Asus 6950 2GB DCII's in CF if you have the room. I'm loving that setup.

Otherwise just go 2x 6950 2GB CF, it's by far the most bang for the buck.

2 GTX580's
Eyy man check what pricerange i have looked up ^^

the best value would be to get crossfire 6950s and unlock them.
They have stopped making 6950 with bios switch so that is not a choice

I am going to go with a corsair 600t or 650d case. but do you know if a p8p67 pro mb will have enough space for 2 that large cards?. isnt it bad to have a card blowing stright on the other one?
No one has any other suggestions? what is the differens between CF (6950) and CFX (6970)?

will my computer live longer on 2 6950 than a single gtx 580? because i wont upgrade until 2013?
Thanks the answers so far

(sry for bad english im from sweden) :)

you will get more life for sure. 1 gtx 580 cannot handle that res by itself well. you need 2 cores believe it or not to process that kind of res with high AA and max settings.

if you cant find reference 6950s with the bios switch, it wont make that big of a difference to be honest since you are not driving 3 monitors. 2 unflashed 6950s 2gb will still be a good buy imo or pay the premium for the 6970s if you want the piece of mind

That's in a Corsair 650D case with the Asus P8Z68-V Pro motherboard. The downside being that it covers all expansion slots. If you went with reference or 2-slot cooler design cards you would have plenty of space between them. I've seen a lot of people sandwiching cards together with a lot less space than that so I'm really not worried. I have seen the top card hit 90C when both cards are pegged at 100% usage for a long time. The top card idles silently at 50C, but that temp is pretty common when 3-monitors are plugged in. I primarily went with those cards so that I could run 3x monitors on DP ports (heard of tearing issues with the 6k series using dp/dp/dvi, even though I didn't have the issue on my 5870).

Indeed a sweet build. ^^ Corsair has been coming out with some good stuff lately! I wish I had looked closer at their products during my build... still I'm loving their AX850, perfect for Crossfire. Which'll work best for the OP's intended gaming resolution.

I bit the bullet and bought Crossfire 6970's, though. I think it's actually just a bit faster than a 6990 which costs about the same. It's gonna last three years, at the very least. Especially if I drop in the 6970 from my old system for Trifire. I'll skip 7xxx and replace the cards with 8xxx at the end of that time frame.

What games do you intend to play?

Most games don't push a single 6950 at 2550x1440. I'd say get a single 6950, if you are happy, you'll save some cash. If not, then you can just get another.

I game at 1440p. A single 580 may fall short. So if you don't want to spend more than a grand on video cards, 2x6970, 2x6950, 2xGTX570 (may have VRAM limit), 1x6990, or 1xGTX590.

If you go for crossfirex 6950 or 6970, make sure that you get a board with at least 2 spaces in between the PCIE slots (for reference 2 slot cards), or the boxy design of the cayman cards may cause the top one to get too hot. I ran into this; when I had the GA-X58A-UD3R, both cards ended up flush with each other.

Also, Crysis 2 DX11 will run like shit with AMD cards, if that game is important to you should wait for an AMD driver update that may or may not fix that or go with nvidia.
