I'm doing that set up right now. VA next to TN 120hz.
It's sweet. Although my rig can support both monitors. I generally run them separately and have one running off my laptop. But yeah its totally doable. You'll have the gaming monitor when you want to game and the IPS or VA when you want to photo editing.
Have you considered VA for photo editing? They are much cheaper alternatives to IPS. And if you're considering e-IPS, VA panels may be able to produce better picture quality and colors for lower or matching price levels.
I've compared my EW2420 which is a VA panel based monitor with my works U2311 and my friends U2410. Although the picture quality on the U2410 is better than the EW2420, the EW2420s image beats the U2311. But the price of the EW2420 is less or the same as the U2311 (depending if Dell offers discount coupons or rebates), but usually half the price of the U2410. The EW2420 has an advantage over the U2311 because of its 3000:1 native contrast ratio and 8 bit color. The EW2420 also has 178/178 viewing angles and has wide range of inputs. 4 USB ports, 2 HDMI, DVI, and D-Sub. The monitor is stunning for movies, browsing and work. And if you calibrate it you can get even more spectacular picture quality!

EW2420's viewing angles are only a tincy bit better than a TN, and has bad color presets. How do extra connections help with photo editing?

For Photo editing the Asus PA246Q Review is the best option, it supports sRGB and does not have the agressive AG coating which dirties whites/light colors and makes certain colors hard to see through the grain.
For Matte 120hz, the Planar is the best, for Glossy the Asus VG236H Review.
