Team Fortress 2 Is Now Free To Play

wow, very unexpected and cool

such a good game... I hope this move grows the community substantially..

Well, that will definitely take the wind out of the sales of Battlefield Heroes. Have not followed that in particular but..

I haven't played TF2 in over a year and a half. Too much items to deal with it now. I was only with secondary weapon sets but after that, the fun was lost for me.

Hurray for micro-transactions!

Seriously though, game died to me a long time ago. Wasn't anything like the TF(C) I was hoping for :(.

What? The items don't even matter. You can easily play the game and not be affected by it. That's the beauty of it, you don't need any of the items. You can buy them to have them now, or you can just play normally and you'll often get them anyway (without you even realizing it) thanks to the drop system. Plus sometimes you're given items during certain seasons just for owning the game (Everyone was given a Halloween themed hat during Halloween). Stop blowing it out of proportion.

doesn't this let hackers screw with ppl risk free? They can just make a new account every two week?

I don't even know what half the weapons are now...

Vanilla TF2 with 32 players was my favorite...

Thats what I am concerned about... free games are hacker infested.

How am I blowing it out of proportion? I liked vanilla style and while there are vanilla options out there, the servers that had the best communities, to me, died shortly after all this stuff came around. I am stating simple fact, for me. Just because I don't "jive" with your opinion, does not mean I am blowing it out of proportion.

Ugh. Yeah. This is pretty much why I deleted TF2 from my games list. It's frustrating trying to get some L4D1 (I still prefer it over to the pretty colors and charmless characters of L4D2) going and seeing game after game being infested with cheaters. I can't imagine TF2 is going to be any less affected by hacks than the still-pay-to-play games.

There is actually free and premium statuses. http://www.teamfortress.com/freetoplay/faq.php

That being said TF2 was one of my favorite all time games and I have hundreds of hours logged into it but I stopped playing after the constant hat updates and micro transactions. Both the game balance and art style were compromised just so Robin Walker could continue to experiment with the player base. If I could play any game right now it would be Team Fortress 2 but no matter what all of you say I can't because that game is gone.

When I bought tf2 back in 2007, I would have NEVER in a million years imagined that it would have turned into a micro transaction free-2-play game.

I don't understand what this game is trying to be. When I bought the Orange Box years ago I was excited for it -- then I played it for a few hours and realized the identity crisis. Where's the advanced movement (strafe, circle jumps)? Worst of all it felt slow and had CRITICAL HITS (awful).

Then they added a marketplace or drop system. (hats and jars of piss)
Now it's free2play.

Very strange hybrid FPS / MMO Valve has supported.

the got so much crap in the game now you can't even conquer the enemy team. 3 engineers with modified turrets keeps em at bay.

TFC died in that sense, The only thing I play is Day of Defeat and BF2, till BF3 comes out cause COD series milk it too much.

Q. Won’t going Free to Play mean more griefers and cheaters?
We’re increasing our focus on making sure that hostile players can’t ruin your fun. Specifically, we’ll be keeping a close eye on players exploiting the ability to make infinite free accounts to bypass bans. We’ve built systems that’ll allow us to measure and track what these players are doing, and respond quickly.

Q. How much of the game can I play without paying anything?
The entire game can be played without making a purchase. All game modes, classes, and maps are available. Nearly every weapon is available through achievements, drops, or crafting.

Sweet my lady is going to like this. She always wanted it for her work rig but never got around to buying it.

The whole 'free to play' thing unquestionably killed several other games before, with the massive amount of cheats and hacks.

VAC seems a more reliable system than Punkbuster was at stopping them, though, and several sites do a good job running servers with admins always on-hand (which was never the case with AA, for example).

So we'll see. I'm concerned, but only a bit.

That the 'free' accounts get a different classification is definitely interesting. I wonder if we'll start seeing 'premium account only' servers popping up?

So Valve continues to test future game model on TF2 :)

One thing I find strange is that TF2 is so old now, anyone who still cares for the game probable have already by now. Hell I stop being active a long time ago. So I don't think it will be a good indication of how many people would be willing to pay for premium feature since we've all already paid for the full game anyway.

What would be interesting is if DOTA 2 is free to play. Now that would be a good indication of how successful this model will be.

Vanilla TF2 with 32 players was my favorite...

Agreed. This was when the game was best , I'm sick of listening to people argue about items and trading. I liked it better when Valve was releasing a steady stream of class updates in major overhauls. I liked it better when they focused on the maps and arena play.

Now its all about items in just about every game I go in. I wish I could select to turn off the bullshit and just focus on what made Team Fortress so amazing , the game play.

And please , free to play? It was $2 on Steam yesterday , don't act like they didn't milk the living crap out of it first. If anything its good publicity for Steam as a whole , its got nothing to due with being a "gift to PC gamers" and all to do with racking up huge profits in micro transaction fee's. If you wanna buy a $20 pack of hats and stupid looking weapons , then go right ahead .. but this isn't the same Team Fortress 2 we've been playing for years anymore. Its now turned into Valve's F2P public experiment.

If this model continues to prove successful , expect in Left 4 Dead as well.

I think valve does really cool things thank goodness for them in a world of EA and activision.

But one thing I think they need to do is make some sort of filtering system for players. And the first thing to add would be the ability to check if players own at least 1 game on their account. Most of the people testing cheats are doing so on free disposable account usually with games like HL2DM which you can get for free. If we could just prohibit anyone with a completely free account from joining a server that would do alot to stop cheating issues. They do this with friends to stop spam you cannot add friends if you do not own at least 1 game.

Anyone here is actually old enough to play the original Quake TF?

Yeah but is TF2 even worth playing anymore?

While the constant updates have added value for some, they've basically destroyed the game for others, I know I'm not alone when I say this. I guess it's the same old thing with games today, businesses are perfectly OK with dicking over their customers as long as they make more customers than they lose.

I think ill be avoiding this one too. Valve multiplayer games tend to have horrible horrible communities surrounding them, and now the bar for entry is set so low I don't see this improving. Also, from what others have said it seems like an over simplified, slow version of classic team games from the early 2000s. So i've rather play on quake live, which is also free, yet seems to have a decent community.

That pretty much sums up my opinion on the hats and the crappy weapons that unbalanced the piss out of that game.

same here. I used to be a TF2 addict but haven't really played in over a year. The new items don't bother me though, but to some degree, I do feel a little lost as I haven't been keeping up with game updates and what the new weapons do.

either way, this is pretty cool. Hopefully a bunch of new people jump onboard. It's got to be one of the greatest team based MP games released in the last 10 years

I got hung up on the whole "screw the new weapons/items/craftables/etc..." But after putting the game on the back-burner for a while, I realized none of it mattered and the game is still a ton of fun to play with friends, real and virtual. I see people running around with swords and shields and hats and I just run around with my mostly-vanilla loadout and Primeval Warrior badge topping the scoreboards :)

Now there will be even more fresh meat to turn into tiny gibblets with my rocket launcher.

Do you still have to randomly receive the new weapons or can you still unlock them through achievements?
It's been a while since I played

.

Just search for vanilla servers if you don't want to play with new weapons. There are plenty of them out there

It's been a while since I played

both (random and via achievements)

if you beg like a bitch, you can usually weasel some free (shitty) items out of people.

i've worked the trade system over before and made out like a bandit. the trick is to join mario_kart servers and trade retarded 13 year olds. i went from like a backburner and a little bit of metal to a polycount hat when they were hot shit and brand new in like an hour of comically lopsided trades.

or you can just go afk in a server for a while and get some items.

but most of the items are fun... not sure i'd like them for competitive play, but dicking around in pubs, they're fun.

Last time i played tf2 competitively was before all the hats and new weapons, presumably they would be disallowed/disabled and you would have to play vanilla?

Most are banned, some aren't, hats obviously don't matter

Thanks, dr.stevil

Yea, I used to play on Mplayer and Quakeworld. I don't remember if Heat.net had TF but I am pretty sure I used to play Quake Da Bomb there.

Memories. *tears* :D
