F.E.A.R. 3

I'm going to put my cynical hat on and ask aloud whether the first impressions posts are going to turn favorable now that Kyle has said he likes it. *ducks for cover*

I really liked FEAR 1+XP. I thought FEAR2 was good enough to play and got it on sale. I would consider replaying 1 for fun - but probably wouldn't replay 2, for example. I'll probably wait for 3 to go on sale but I will get it at some point. I have enough of a backlog to keep a few people busy in the meantime. I'm glad to hear the positive remarks.

No troll intended, but perhaps your eyes don't pick up the stuttering when strafing from side to side - either that or their are driver problems with the 470...

It does the exact same thing at all resolutions, so I know its not the card being underpowered.

What sort of length is the single-player campaign? 8+ hours or the trendy 4-hour BS?

Probably around the 7-8 hour mark thereabouts.

The game's awesome.

I don't think anything could be as good as the first for one reason if nothing else: The concept is no longer "new."

I'll never forget that feeling during my first playthrough of FEAR. That just doesn't happen very often in general and to ask even the best of sequels to duplicate that is a tall and damn near impossible order.

I don't feel the game's "awesome" by any means. Just another shooter bringing nothing new. Graphics are VERY average. Nowhere near as scary/immersive as F1 or even F2... However, I JUST got done playing through Singularity and Metro 2033, so maybe my hopes were a little too high.

I will agree that the AI is pretty good - much better than the previous games.

I'll second that... If the stuttering is fixed i'll consider it a very good game, but no better or worse than F.E.A.R (1)

That is a very fair point, although I do think they were way off the mark with 2. But if the general consensus is that 3 is better than 2, if not as good as 1, I'll give it a try. At the right price ;)

Ended up buying this for 25$. So far loving it. Not much different then fear 1 and 2. But this is a good thing those games are good. The amount of multiplayer in this game makes it a really good deal. And I don't have any performance issues on 560 Ti. Very smooth.

Edit: Should also add. Does not feel like a console game at all. PC controls are very nice.

wow, its been quite a while since kyle hasnt completely hated a new fps release.

i guess that makes it a buy for sure.

Just bought the game and started the install. Looking forward to the co-op modes.

Can you blame him? So many are console ports now and really there hasn't been any fantastic FPS games in a while (except Portal 2 but I don't personally consider that a shooter). PC gamers have to deal with the "after thought" effect more and more.

Once in a while though a developer does a good enough job that it doesn't end up alienating PC gamers to please the console gaming market.

For the most part I agree with Kyle's view point right now , but thankfully there some really quality titles coming later this year.

Im glad to hear its getting pretty positive reviews overall. Im a pretty big fan of the franchise and FEAR is one of the few games I go back and play thru fairly regular. Im not sure Ill drop $50 on this though but Ill probably pick it up when it hits $40. Got enough games on backlog to hold me over til then.

I may think to buy this game when the time comes. But first, I wait for the price to drop lol.

Hows the horror element compared to previous titles? Is it scarier?

Sorry if it has been addressed elsewhere previously. I haven't been paying much attention to it till I saw Kyle's post at the front page and I realize its released, lol.

Looking forward to playing this game. I remember the first one making me come out of my chair, hands off the keyboard in an "oh shit" moment. It was a room with a pipe pit in the middle, and you walked a gantry way to a ladder leading down in to the pit. Anyway, room was empty, nothing below or behind me... walked to the ladder, shouldered my weapon, grabbed the ladder and spun around to slide down and effin Alma was standing right behind me as I started to slide down! I still laugh at how mych that scared the crap out of me! Hehehehehe...

Cant wait to get into this game too....

I loved FEAR and its expansions. I've only played two hours of FEAR 2 and cannot stand it. Its very disappointing, dumbed-down, consolified compared to the original. The original was on consoles, but was made for PCs first and then ported down. Of course, its also disappointing how its story doesn't take place after FEAR 1 but yet FEAR 1's unofficial expansion, Extraction Point, did a better job of it, lol.

FEAR 1 to FEAR 2 to me is extremely similar to Crysis 1 to Crysis 2.

How does FEAR 3 compare?

What is consolfied? I had zero problems with FEAR2.

Also have zero problems with FEAR3. Feels like a PC game to me.. Controls are solid.

The main problem I had with F.E.A.R. 2 was the lighting. There was something about the graphics that irked me the whole way through. And afterwards I replayed the original, and I was amazed how much better the dynamic lighting brought everything to life vs the mostly static lighting in F2. The gunplay in the first felt "quicker", usually I like a weighed down style, ala Killzone2/3, but the twitchiness of the first, along with the amazing (at the time) environment destructiveness brought a really hong kong action vibe to the game. The second just didn't amaze like the first did. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't anywhere near as fresh and visceral as the first.

This and what Kyle wrote makes we want to pick this up and give it a go. I was disappointed in the second installment and on the fence about getting the third. Thanks for the quick "review".

i got it for the ps3 "gasp" and i find myself kicking myself in the ass for not having a KB and M. i suck balls with a controller. so much for getting a steal for 25 dollars. I'm on recruit and im still getting owned by the AI.

Through 5 intervals now. Game was getting harder (and better) and then the game introduced the shield. Hopefully it doesn't reappear for the rest of the game because it may as well be god mode.

This game is extremely fun in co-op mode. Playing with a buddy and hes is playing as point man and Im as fettel. One of the coolest co-op mechanics I have ever seen.

this game is horrible.

the movement feels strange, shooting is pathetically unsatisfying, gunplay as a whole is boring, firefights somehow looked more spectacular in the first game let alone this, it isn't spooky in the slightest.

also i don't know what's with the blood / damage effects on models. skin and clothing magically flakes off revealing skeleton / muscle wherever someone gets hit and most people survive the first hit. smack someone in the face with a pistol shot and they will be running around as a badly textured skull with some 64x64 texture muscle fiber over it. it looks fucking stupid and so far this is not nearly as scary or fun action wise as the first game couple games.

it runs fine, looks decent enough (and msi afterburner reports dx11 on my gtx 260, so it has a pretty nice dx10 path at least) but it's just not fun or scary.

you probably haven't played the previous 2 or the expansions have you?

Do you see the "strafe stuttering" as I mentioned in a previous post? Is that when you're referring to "movement feels strange"? Because I would completely agree.

GTX 470.

Hows the horror element compared to previous titles? Is it scarier?

Scarier? No. More "consistently" dark/atmospheric, though.

I gave a small "review" a page or two back covering all the generals. In terms of atmosphere, I'd say it's more consistent, with continual ambient sounds and music, both of which are excellent.

The first in the series was definitely relatively consistent in mood, but there were "gaps" at times, in the music and ambiance. In F.3.A.R., it's consistent, beginning to end, with consistent atmosphere, and many different types of atmospheres, though always dark and haunting.

You also want to turn off the 'console' settings within options, such as aim helping and such like that.

I find the game to be incredibly fun for what it is and a good continuation of the series as a whole. The multiplayer is rehashed stuff from other games that will get boring soon enough, but the coop was fun and well done.

The main question is: Is the game worth it?

For me, it was worth it just fine as I really enjoyed the experience and am in a position where $50 isn't /that/ big of a deal. For those of you on a tighter budget, I would suggest holding off on it until the price drops a little bit, as it is a good shooter, but not something with the longevity of Call of Duty or Battlefield.

My only real complaint with the game is the FOV. I hope WSGF figures out a way around it.

Heh, is this a new unofficial feature on the [H], mini-reviews of the newest games?

Personally I'll wait for a major sale on this game since I didn't really enjoy FEAR 2. It just wasn't scary, and unlike Dead Space 2 (which also wasn't scary) it wasn't that great as a shooter. They seemed to improve the AI and animations in FEAR 2, but didn't design the levels to take advantage of it like FEAR did.

I think I may already know the answer to my question, but is there leaning in in this one?

wow, didn't expect that. wouldn't mind checking out a demo in that case.

Kyle likes a recently released game? Holy shit! lol j/k

I've always been a fan of the FEAR franchise. I'm gonna check it out.

strafing stutter kills it on Nvidia.

Seriously, who uses lean anymore. LMAO. It's got a built in cover system. Lean = lolz
