Buy iPhone 4 or wait for 4s/5?

I have an upgrade available for my line on Verizon, and I'm thinking about upgrading to an iPhone, after having several Android phones and finding them to be unstable/unreliable.

Is there any program in place that would allow me to exchange my iPhone when the new one comes out, and how much difference do people anticipate this years upgrade being from the 4 (Albeit mostly speculation, with some true information..!) ?

ALSO, how much does a true navigation program cost for the iPhone, and is there any available in Mexico?

tomtom is like $70, but it works great, the same as their GPSs, and there is a version available for Mexico.

Wait for the iPhone 5 and either buy it or buy the 4 at, I assume, it's new price. That's what I'll be doing.

Navigon. I can't remember the exact cost...but I believe it is around $60. You can get full maps that are stored on your device...you'd likely want the North American maps for Mexico.

Thanks for the replies so far, fellas. I'm going to look into this further and wait until the iPhone 4 price drops before making a decision. However, anymore information would be much appreciated.

It comes down to your need.

If you need a new phone, the iPhone 4 is still a hell of a device. You'll be very happy with it.

If you don't need a new phone, then it makes sense to wait for the iPhone 5.

Ya know (sorry to steal your thread for a second, OP) I never thought about it like that. I am into the iPhone 4, just not into the antenna thing nor the current price.

If the iPhone 4s/5 is just upgraded internals, I may spring for an iPhone 4 at a discounted rate.

Then again, they still sell the iPhone 3GS for $50...

and that's likely what will happen with the iPhone 4. Wish I coulda waited a few more months, but a few months without an iPhone would have sucked. (my 3G died on me finally, I bought that thing3 on launch day lol)

GF was in same situation and I told her to get a 4 now. Next reiteration is only going to be a minor upgrade I think...

Regardless of whether it is a minor upgrade or not, I would wait. Considering the 3G -> 3GS was a "minor upgrade", it is important to note, features and updates such as iOS 5 (a rather big update at that) no longer support the iPhone 3G. Would you want to be in a shitty position like that in the future possibly? Sounds like a bad idea to me.

Ultimately, it is personal preference. Go with what you prefer.

If it gets the iPad2 cpu, the dual core as rumored, that means significantly more processing power to distance itself from past devices. iOS5 with pending release this fall, has full featureset on iphone4, so you get full features from apple, but what about third party devs? *shrug*

For me the question is can you jailbreak it? IOS devices are the only apple products I buy. I live without a jailbreak for my ipad 2 but that certainly wouldn't be acceptable for my phone if iphone 5 is not jailbreakable. It will be the first release I do not get and I'll just keep the 4 regardless of what features the new ones has.

For GPS I use Magellan, they just released a pretty huge update for it a few days ago. It is pretty much perfect. I think I paid $40 for the North American version when I bought it for my 3g a while ago. Not sure what it costs now.

The first beta released to devs on Jun7 was jailbroken same day according to the news... so you have little to worry about.

iphone 4 is on sale at walmart for $147 till the end of the month. I picked up one for my wife.

+1. Why get it if it's not necessary?

i've been eligible for an upgrade through AT&T for little while now, but i'm hanging on to my 3GS until the iPhone 5 is available. seems like the logical thing to do at this point.

That was IOS 5 that was jailbroken. I believe that the limera1n exploit is a hardware exploit that can't be closed on the iPhone 4. They will have to find a new exploit in order to jailbreak the next iPhone.

I'm sure they will, but it won't be day 1.

Ah what to do, its either iphone 4, charge, or tbolt. gotta get in before unlimited goes awayyyy

This is the same for me, and I would advise the same for the OP. It doesn't sound like you desperately need a phone now anyways so if it's decent still, wait for the iPhone 5. My wife did something similair because she went the 3G to 4 step (or skip rather), and while I like the iPhone 4, it isn't as dramatic of a difference than the 3 to 4 was (multitasking, killed by iOS 4, slower, etc...).

Definitely wait for 5...even if it's a minor upgrade that's still a big deal in Apple land :) It sucks having the "old" Apple device when all your bros have the new version, that I can say from experience.

Plus even the 3GS had a shit ton of things the 3G couldn't do when it came out like voice commands for dialing numbers, right down to things like displaying a percentage next to your battery icon for more accurate readings. Little things maybe, but they all add up.

If you have a semi-modern phone, I would wait.

I bought the 3GS when I knew the 4 was about three months away. That's because I had a six year old freebie flip phone that couldn't do anything but make calls or text with.

I honestly think that you'd be better off with an iphone 4 and skipping the iphone 5 (and upgrading to an iphone 6 when it's released)

Depending on what phone you have now, this might be your last chance to get in on an unlimited data plan (if Verizon is even still offering them). In July, they're going to a teired data plan like AT&T is currently using.

Also, while the specs haven't been released, the next iphone is likely to see only minor updates. A slightly faster clocked dual core CPU/GPU and a better camera (the iphone 4's camera is pretty damn impressive for a cell phone). As it is, the iphone 4 is PLENTY fast for just about anything you can throw at it.

unless they plan on releasing some really powerful and processor intensive software, a dual core seems like overkill at this point
