I have a bad feeling that this whole thing is going to turn into a huge mess. Honestly, I cringe every time someone says something is going to "start a whole new phase" of the internet.

Groups able to pay the $185,000 application can petition next year for new updates to ".com" and ".net" with website suffixes using nearly any word in any language, including in Arabic, Chinese and other scripts, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers decided at a meeting in Singapore.

The surge in domains should help alleviate some of the overlap of names in the most popular suffixes, especially ".com", which has 94 million sites registered.

Yes, I can see all corporations who can afford the $185,000 fee dropping their dot com to alleviate some overlap. I'm sure Steve Jobs can't wait to give up apple.com from so some other apple business can use it.

The only thing this has done is create some new way to soak more money out of the end consumer to do nothing more than redirect a dot com to a very expensive dot gimmick.

Who the hell here goes to every website by typing in an address?

I navigate the internet solely by clicking on bookmarks, or searching for whatever I need.

How elaborate, or how many addresses a single company has does not make a single bit of difference.

It's just a way for people to start buying and selling domain names and try to make money off of it. I'm just waiting for the first domain name bubble with news such as ".bigdick suddenly got smaller, lost 12 % in one day" and "multi-billionaire ruined after his domains lost all of their value." you know it will happen.

If they ever dropped the fee, the scamming and spamming coming from it would just be insane.
