24" Widescreen CRT (FW900) From Ebay arrived,Comments.

Windas can at least read the error codes for the monitor. Of course, reading and making sense of the codes may require a little deductive reasoning to make use of. In any case, thanks for the heads up on Sony repair. I thought < $400 sounded too good to be true.

Would it be worth sending in my FW900 to Sony for repair if my tube has some burn in (which it does)? I looked at the restrictions on the Sony website and the flat rate pricing does not apply to "display" components (tubes, panels etc). While I love my CRT, with the slight burn in on the tube (which I assume can't be repaired without replacing it), I wonder if it's time to let it go.

And on top of this, my FW900 is disguised as a Silicon Graphics display. It's really a full Sony FW900 but was sold by SGI and is encased in a SGI branded enclosure. I suspect Sony wouldn't even service one of these.

Hello,
I have Sony Trinitron GDM-W900 and Sony GDM-FW900.
I have a little but annoying problem with first monitor.
When I power on the W900, it loses memorized parameters like resolution and center size. Exactly, the screen goes to the left, out of the screen. After a variable time, from 20min to 40min, it seems like happens a automatic Degauss and the the center size comes back perfectly centered.
I tried both Vga cable and BNC cable but the problem always appears. Using these two cables I never had problems with my other monitor, the Sony Fw900.
Other parameters are memorized, but resolution goes to 1280*1024 (Instead of 1920*1200 @76hz) and the screen goes to the left for a while.

I remember you that I use Windows XP and I never have found .inf files or drivers for this amazing monitor.

Here, I post you two photos:

I suspect they would service it. But, don't just throw it away if you decide not to get it fixed. Sell it for parts. :)

I wonder how much a clean, unblemished low hours tube would cost me?

Probably in the area of that:

:(

Sigh.

Do I assume correctly that the repair facility for this beast is on the West Coast? If so, between the flat rate and the shipping I'll be looking at upwards of $500.

Best bet is just troll ebay, craig's list and this thread looking for someone selling one. Then if you get it and its OK you can sell the other for parts.

EDIT: resolution problem SOLVED: I solved it using Sony FW900 .inf file but I need help for center- size problem

Maybe his cable is transparent.

Actually, I came across a low quality extension cable once that clearly shows a much poorer picture when used. It almost looks like a double image is being shown and this is probably what he is talking about.

Solution is simple. Don't use a $2 cable.

I'm using a nice thick shielded VGA cable, but as soon as I add a DVI to VGA adapter to connect it to my new video card, I get image ghosting.

Have searched the thread for solutions to fix the problem, such as loosening cable screws etc etc but none of that works for me.

I used the Original BNC cable from Sony with the DVI-VGA adapter from my EVGA GTX 480 without any problems. Now im using this DVI-BNC cable and that cable works perfect. (http://cgi.ebay.at/FV32150-DMT-Kabe...oto_Zubehör_Kabel_Adapter&hash=item255a010742)

I also got these problems of the double image ghosting whatever as i used this DVI-BNC cable from inline (http://cgi.ebay.at/InLine-BNC-Kabel...uterzubehör_Kabel_Adapter&hash=item20ba1fd7e9)

I would say just get some other cables/adapters (maybe you can borrow some from your friends) and test them all. Thats the only soloution i know.

Hello, my fw900 stopped working a while ago and recently I've been looking at monitors. Would I be better off spending $500 on a Dell U2410 or getting the fw900 fixed? (If so where can I get it fixed? I'm in the dallas/ft worth area.

When you power it up the little glass bulb (Spark gap SG901) below the black wire flashes with blue arcs and a buzzing sound. I'll upload the repair manual here in a bit if anyone is interested, its on the left side board if you are facing the monitor beside the Hi voltage thing-a-ma-jig.

If anyone has an old fw900 and wants to sell me the D-Board, let me know.

I've had my FW900 for a couple years now and it has been great. Lately I've notice image expands beyond the screen borders as I scroll through forums and web pages or if I switch between IE and LiveMail. It's most prominant when I scroll between posts with images and without, but it gets much less noticable as the monitor warms up. Should I be concerned?

Anyone can help me?

One of my FW900's occasionally comes on shifted off screen to the left by about an eighth of an inch. It does not go away unless I change resolutions and then back. It also does not happen all the time. I do not know what does this and I havent been able to fix it. I am sure it is just some tiny capacitor buried deep inside doing something wrong.

how do i post pictures on here

you need to host them on a picture site or your own website..
imgur is good as well as photobucket.

upload your pics to one of those sites, then copy the code in here and use the image tags...

ive been kicking around an idea. eyefinity or whatever the fudge its called (when using 3+ monitors to display one image/compy game) is cool, but i cant commit to it with thick bezels splitting up the image so much.

i noticed - with the fw900's bezel removed - the screen itself has pretty thin margins. now me gots to thinking... three of those bad boys, at the right angles within a custom uni-bezel might just be something.

this something perhaps feasible?

ps 4k displays are cool, but i still shard a little bit each time i witness the fw900's color reproduction in games. id throw thousands at a 4k monitor is the colors approached the fw900.

have you tried moving the cable around while it is attached to the monitor/GPU?

i only get zero ghosting if the cable is at a particular angle in the monitor input.

Hola mi amigos

After lurking for a couple years I finally got 2 Sony FW900s. I purchased my first one from another user at a different forum. The second one I got off of craigslist. Every morning when I got to work I would search for "FW900" and I never had any luck. One morning I searched for "24 inch CRT" and found one less than 5 miles from my house for $150.

I really wish I could buy one of these things brand new and shipped off of newegg. It breaks my nerd heart that the world has moved onto super thin crap.

Noob questions:

What is the max resolution that is fully resolved? From what I understand you will loose detail above 1920x1200?

Why is there no vertical pin cushion  One of my monitor is almost perfect but the top left and right corners look like are drooping? It seems to get worse the higher the resolution goes?

no point buying FW900 or any CRT anymore.

I moved on to TFT now using HP ZR24W. IPS panel. I am quite happy with it (im a very picky person)

Hi goodfellarobert,

1. The max supported resolution is 2304x1440@80hz, but the best and recommended resolution is 1920x1200@85hz.

2. Do you mean that the picture rounds up in the upper corners, cause i think my second FW900 also has this problem. Sorry i dont have an solution for this problem but im also interested in how to fix this.

Exactly, the top left and right corners are not level with the center. If there was a vertical pincushion it would be an easy fix. Its only an issue with 1 of my FW900s too.

I'm skeptical that the ZR24W is a replacement for an FW900 running @ 140hz. Reviews show 30+ms of input lag on that panel.

Well, GOOD for you

I'm not picky, I know how to recognize quality, and to me there is yet NO replacement for the FW900 in any aspect.

Making sweeping statements like "no point" simply because there is no point to you, is rather obnoxious.

I would smoke anyone in a FPS on my crt and they on their LCD. I laugh at everytime they say I'm cheating. It's night and day playing a fast FPS game(s) on a CRT vs LCD.

So does anyone know of a fix for the top left and right corners drooping? You don't notice at 1600x1000 but 1920x1200 looks like the corners are sagging.

i think the Landing adjustment can also have an effect on the corners. my fw900 has been in a closet for almost 2 yrs so my memory might be a little off. ;)

There is no vertical pincushion. Unless Windas has something in it your stuck. My FW's have some bending over the entire top. To the point where I need to either sacrifice 3-5 pixels in the center or lower it and have 3-5 pixels black on the ends. What you are describing sounds more severe.

As for announcing no more use for the FW900.. Sell it. On here. I have faith that something will come out that can come close enough in the next few years. I can't get comfortable in front of an LCD. Even adjusted to my liking they all seem too harsh and cold. Granted the warmness I feel from my fw900 may very well be radiation.............

I am interested in sim-racing and using one of my 900's is great for the refresh rate and response time but any real sim-racer strives to have a triple-head setup and although I own three working FW900's the nightmare of problems triple-heading them on any platform and expense of running them and the engineering required to hold them and the 5+ inch combined bezels give great pause when considering it.

That alone makes me interested in LCD's and plasma's of all different sizes. With the newest crop of cheap TV's and monitors as a base I can see mid-high stuff getting good enough to accommodate the simple sim-racing and gaming tasks especially with 120Hz tech in use. (though your limited I think to 60Hz max currently on all multi-screen arrays)

Then again sometimes CRT's just aren't practical. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/F12Bwth2/Forums/TugSimPhoto1Panoramic.jpg

But the reason I will defend my CRT till its or my death.. THE COLORS..... http://www.mediafire.com/?ggi21c5df6eam Switch to Image View in the Upper Right.
