Bandwidth Caps Around the World Compared To US

Ive got 2 MB/s with hour long bursts of 8MB/s from time to time dont know how much it is in mbits, but im happy with it since i dont have a data cap at all and the price is around 20/month

in the uk BT broadband on option 3 (the unlimited package) is 150gb for ADSL/ADSL2+
for FTTC/FTTD BT broadband (limited role out) its 250gb

its not unlimited as the site says and they charge you per GB after you go past the hidden limits and they traffic shape p2p an little and adobe flash download for IE (yes i am talking about the installer god knows why they do it as i have to install Hotspot Shield to VPN bypass the network traffic shape to install flash for IE or update it)

there are to many other BT ADSL LLU providers to list but many of them have crapy 2gb to 50gb limits or/and traffic management (they basicly use BT network so technically in the UK there is really only 2 networks in the uk for public use virgin cable or BT that offer up to 20mb bb that on avg is 5mb as it uses phone lines for broadband where as cable is FTTC then last 100-200yards is Armoured coax cable)

so on BT your limited by distance from the local exchange so it does not matter what ISP you switch to you allways get the same speed not matter what ISP your on, unless your on cable then you get what you pay for below

Virgin media cable is only around where the pipes has been put in that's its main weakness (they not expanded the network for last 10 years) but offers the best speeds as they are the only ones who offer True 10/30/50/100mb speeds (DOCSIS 1.1/2.0/3.0) but they have day speed caps in place its easier to just look at this link for day caps http://shop.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management/traffic-management-faster-uploads.html but annoying they cap news servers now at peak time (6pm- midnight approx it depends how much has been downloaded in the day for the hole of the UK cable network depends how much news servers get speed limited but its norm less then 1-5mb speeds when its been limited but can be bypassed by basic giganews VPN or other paid VPN services to restore full speed)

My local cable company just got bought up by a big company in New York and I got my downloaded bandwith doubled and my upload speed quadrupoled for $2 more a month.

Now thats progress! :D

Though last year I got a cease and desist letter from HBO from downloading True Blood off a public bittorrent site. That was a bit scary.....

12 down, 2 up, for ~ $90-$95/month
BUT NO CAPS
AND I GET A /28 !!!

How many people here have a /28 or better ? :D

(Comcast business)

i have 10/1 service with time warner for something like 40 dollars a month i think bundled with tv and phone. the down speed is quite consistently in the 15-20 range (lowest ive seen is 6) but the upload speed usually stays below 1 mbit.

yup I left Virgin/NTL a while ago because of their caps. Hell, I was even one of their trial lists back in the day for the new "broadband". I even installed their PC's in 2 of their call centres in Manchester and Newport, Wales

. It seems that if an outsider belittles these companies, actions happen. CBC said that Rogers and Bell were revamping their costs also, you might want to check this out Snowdog.

You are lucky you can' get Shaw.

Rogers and Bell are the two main Canadian players in what is essentially a duopoly. I haven't seen any sign of anything improving from them. As stated Bell actually lowered the cap on their main packages from 60GB to 25GB. I am no holding my breath for an improvement.

Comcast is decent here, I don't think we ever go over 200gb a month. We get 20mb for $50 or something like. Only other option is qwest 7mb dsl for likr $35 or $40 and its crap.

I used to pay $60/month for 10mbps with a 60gb data cap... so all you americans quit yer bitchin about 250gb comcast caps :)

However thank god a small ISP is offering 10/1 with no cap for $60...

I'm on Cox business - 160 a month, but I get speeds of 90 down and 10 up consistently.

Good for some SSL VPN or FTP etc., it's nice to have static IPs, and the lack of port blocking.

50 down /10up 250gb cap for $99 never hit the cap have come close at 230gb but that was restoring 5 machines steam accounts/win updates and my normal netflix/2 xbox 360's on live and other net usage. i usually average about 180 dl a month

You do know that you can just update the machine/account with the most games on it and then copy the STEAM folder to the other computers, that way you just download your games once. You can then copy that STEAM folder to an external drive for backup so you'll never have to re-download your entire steam accounts, just the updates and games you purchased since the backup.

Let me guess, you simply ignored it and it went away.

This article would have been nice with a graph or chart even if the numbers were rough.

I have $99/mo Comcast 50/10 service. I decided I don't watch enough TV so I dropped to $16.95 basic and my bill is $20-$30 cheaper (after taxes) than when I had HD starter and 12/2 internet.

I think the worst taxes are on the television part of the bill.

Threads like this make me love my Fios even more. I left comcast in part due to the data cap that they dont tell anyone about. I'll never look back.

10/1 with a 80 gig cap for $65 with a choice amongst some of the world's worst isp's

Wow guys :) I thought it was pretty bad here in the UK atm im on 100 down and 10 up with NO cap with virgin media here in the uk For £47 a month on its own and verry much less if u take a phone line and a tv package with them atm i pay £55 for land line phone rental few 100 tv channels and my 100mbit BB

The business class is ok but the modem they give you is HORRIBLE. Which modem did they give you?

i dont know what the model number was, but it was really big and it increased my bandwith significantly. also had fewer disconnects. could have just been that my old one was wearing out and the business class one was new, but i remember it making a big difference.

I guess all that yelling to Harper<Clements<crtc, before the election paid off for some of us. My extreme with shaw went upto 25 dl and 2.5 upload (15m/800kbs and shaw raised the cap from 100 gig to 250 gig.
Another coincidence from Telus, The OECD came out with a report slamming Canada with some of the highest cell phone roaming charges in the world, $28 avg vs $9 avg for the rest of the world. The same day Telus changed to $12 avg. It seems that if an outsider belittles these companies, actions happen. CBC said that Rogers and Bell were revamping their costs also, you might want to check this out Snowdog.

nope, it won't do anything since bell and telus have said they will attempt to reintroduce tiered billing again. I'm not sure if u r aware, but the ONLY reason y it was stopped in the first place was because the ndp and then the liberals wanted to make it an election issue so harper's government had to followsuit. Guess what, there won't be any elections anytime soon and the government doesn't give a rats ass so we are so going to get screwed.

as for my service... my options are...

5meg 40 + 8 dollar modem rental fee + tax for 35gb (combined cap) DSL

or

3meg 45 + 5 dollar modem rental fee + tax for unlimited?? (they called me when they said i pumped through 200gb in a month and they wanted me to lower my usage) Cable.

i'm obviously on cable but i've already gotten an email from them saying they will be "changing internet services and policy soon" so... yeah....

I pay SOOO much here in Canada.
Not only is it Canada, but it's rural, so it's even worse.
I get 10Mbps down and 1Mbps up.
200GB cap, and I pay ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!
...
PLUS 13% in HST TAX!

But how much do you save on health care?

Probably never going to get close to my 150GB cap, but I still don't like getting charged $35 for 3M/384k service. Making a move to get 20M/1M for $40 (plus phone and all sorts of others added to it!)

just asking because they gave my business partner this pos smc unit, i have a ubee doscis 3.0 unit

$40/month for 20Mbits down/2Mbits up from Charter, no cap. This, of course, stands only when their service actually works. Right now I pretty much lose all internet capabilities every night from around 9:30-1:00. Awesome.

Sweden here.
I pay about $60 for DSL 24 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up and totaly unlimited, no cap at all.

Never heard about a cap over here, not that I have been looking for one, but if there is any ISP's with a cap they're very uncommon.

I live on the east coast of Canada. My ISP is Bell Aliant I have Fiber to my home with 70/30Mbps and no caps :) I live in one of the first cities in Canada to have Fiber to the home.

I get about 6 Megabits.. but I pay (with fees & taxes) $63 a month. I also have a data cap that hits me seemingly at random, at which point my speed drops to shit. My upload however is pretty much zilch. If I even come close to 100K up.. they reset and cut me off

Thanks Insight :(

I'm on NTT in Japan, definitely no caps. I've hit 30+ gigs on a couple of days before, and I'm rural. My usual is like 500~700MB a day at the most.

This article is full of retarded strawmen:
Think about it: Would you rather be paying more money for the ability to download things faster, or the ability to download more things?
How about both, Like the Japanese ISP mentioned earlier in the article?

And here’s hoping we never have to move to New Zealand.
Why would any of us move to one of the two or three developed nations that are worse than the U.S. when there's dozens that are better?

So how fares the good ol’ U.S. of A? Our prices don’t seem that bad
Yeah, compared to New Zealand and Australia. How about Germany? How do we fare against them?

Don't let it piss ya off too much it's 100 a month and thats discounted cuz i have tv though them 2 its 200 all together! :)

Well, I pay $50 for rural WIMAX. 2 meg down, 768 up. Ping is guaranteed no lower than 120. If it wasn't for a 100% paid for/no mortgage family home I'd move, hehehe. I'm not too mad though, I had to deal with 56k for years until just a few months ago a new company came along with this service.

DSL through local Co-Op only available here...

2mb down 512kb up - $65 plus an additional $20 for just a dial tone on a phone - $85 a month
they require a 'phone' account to have dsl because they were getting dumped and only used for dsl
