Battlefield 3's Pre-Order Firepower Upsets Gamers

This is such a terribly nieve arguement for two reasons. 1. I am sure everyone out there who plays is trying the best they can to get as good as they can in every aspect of the game including headshots. The fact is some people have limited time to play the game. Other people are too young or too old and will not be able to achieve certain levels and finally some people just do not have what it takes be it genetic or environmental they cannot get any better. IMO the whole point of FPS games is that every one starts every map with the same abilities and can get the same weapons. Then it is how each person uses their talents be they learned or genetic to forge the game. The fact you can never achieve a weapon without paying for it takes away alot of the desire to play an FPS game to me.

2. Trust me if this works they will keep stepping up what they charge for. It may not be this game but in a couple it will be bad. Also I have played alot of FPS games and very often as people get better at the game a certain weapon that the developers thought was normal and balanced turns out to be a powerful and important weapon. No reason this same thing cannot happen here even if it was not intended. But then again you will never know if it was intended.

Basically what I am saying is the whole point of a video game is try to put people into a reasonably fair environment. There are so many things unequal to contend with such as age, sex, natural abilities, hardware (which includes everything from your mouse, controller, TV/Monitor, to the system itself), and environment. There is no need to build those things right into a game.

EDIT: also I should mention that while I do not personally care at all about stats alot of people do. And if these weapons are more powerful or useful than the starting weapons in the game then they will effect the stats of many if not most people who do not get them. Also another negative.

You mean "naive", and no, it's not a "naive argument, because it's not an argument at all (though my point still holds true)... it was sarcasm, because people fucking complain too much.

So, thanks for the dissertation, but it's faulty... with the exception of putting people in a "fair environment", which is a good point, but still... "mountains out of molehills" with people, and people just need to relax or they'll never enjoy the game in the first place.

I think the point that Jellylesg was making is that if DLC remains free for pre orders and you're going to pre order because you want the game then it's a moot point.

How are you assessing the worth of a game that hasn't been released, reviewed, or even previewed yet?

I'm confused by your continual use of the phrase, "offers me value for money" when no one knows what is included in the package. For example, if you recall, the promises on the BF2 box never came to fruition.

Are you suggesting that one should pre-order a game and keep it shrink-wrapped in order to retain the ability to return it if it fails to meet expectations?

Please get off the DD strawman. I've repeatedly stated that my issue is with exclusive, game changing content that can not be purchased post-sale.

I was speaking in terms of the price for a brand new PC game. If there is a brand new PC game I find appealing I will buy it; unless, in the case of certain digital distributors, it costs almost a third more than buying retail. I'm not speaking about the game itself being a foregone conclusion, I'm speaking in terms of the package offered for the price.

Example:

Retail DVD with pre-order content delivered to my door the day before release for £22.99-£24.99. Installed and running within 20 minutes. If the game is not to my liking I can re-sell it (at a loss) or return it because the companies I order with allow this.

vs

Digital download minus pre-order content on the day of release for £29.99. Servers backed up with hundreds of thousands of others vying for the same download. A few region changes later I find a less contested host and may have the game downloaded, installed and running within anywhere between an hour at the absolute, .01 % chance of occurrence best scenario, to the next morning. No option to resell or return without risking being locked out of your entire game library for refusing a card payment to the vendor (though I understand Steam is now starting to honour returns which is good).

The former for me is better value for money, irrespective of the quality of the game. That's what I mean. As well as what Frosty clarified above.

hmmm, ok. Well I guess I answered my own question.
It looks like if I want to have the weapons and gear I should just buy it and leave the shrink-wrap on until the reviews start rolling in. EA/DICE/Crytek are the three main companies that continually spit on my customer loyalty so buying something on trust is the last thing I'm doing to do this time around.

Means nothing when the people getting these bonuses are in the UK, and most of the servers are in the US...they'll have lag to contend with!!

EA is already planning a US pre-order incentive for the NA market, which'll probably have even sexier kit in it. It just remains to be seen whether the community/DICE opposition will make them change their minds.

EA has this out about this pack:
I would like to start by clarifying that the Physical Warfare Pack is a time-based exclusive. If you do not pre-order Battlefield 3 at a retailer carrying the Physical Warfare Pack, don’t worry. We will unlock the contents of the Physical Warfare Pack for free to all Battlefield 3 players later this year.

What the hell are you on about?

First of all, every region is getting pre order bonuses they've just been worked out in the UK first, it's nothing the UK is getting that other territories aren't.

Second, there's thousands of UK servers, I've never had to play on a US server for any multiplayer game EVER.

WOW...

I would say VolvoR was being sarcastic but I could be wrong.

Lol talk about freak outs. First off, i was right :D i said id bet everything and id have won, in expected BF/DICE fashion, announced it will be free to all later. Has COD abused you with their $15 map packs so now you flinch when a diff FPS raises its hand? awww lol

As for the servers thing, at least on BC2 i play in North American servers, they tend to have really low ping, hell my Favorited servers are Seattle servers which is exactly where i live.

I bet people will still complain even though its going to be given for free.
Physical Warfare Pack available to all Battlefield 3 players later this year

If you follow DICE you would know that they eventually give away their DLC for free. Just look up and see that all BF2 booster packs are now free. And I remember them making BC 1 stuff for free too. People just need to chill out.

Nope, they are redeemed now in my eyes. Not buying it from Steam? Well that hurts but I'll live.
