ASUS Eee Pad Transformer coming Tuesday 4/26

Just got n64oid up and running. Mario 64 and Zeldo Oncaria run perfectly (with some random sound hitching in Zelda).

Trying to get AnDosBox up and running. Anyone know a good step-by-step for this? I've downloaded a couple ROMs that I had back in the day, but they're .zips and I can figure out how to execute once on the TF. Can't wait to get some Gabriel Knight and Ultima Black Gate action.

Also, got PDANet Tablet bluetooth tethering running from my Evo 4g. It's quirky (disconnects from time to time), but works ok.

anyone find any good cases for the transformer yet? i'd like one w/ a built in stand of some kind if possible

Im just using the official Asus sleeve, works well and has a stand. Price kinda sucked, and it doesn't have the slots for the dock if you have one.

Then i have a generic netbook carry case that fits the tablet with the sleeve on when I take it out of the house.

Also put on the skinomi screen protector. I'm not anxious about cosmetically damaging my transformer anymore.

recheck for updates already?

It wouldn't work when I tried. But I went to drink a few beers and came back, just having the dock at the charger all the time; then I tried to connect it again - and everything works now. Typing this using my Transformer-Netbook :D

How is this Eee Pad? My wife bought an iPad 2 a couple weeks ago, but it kept dropping the wireless connection so she took it back. The day before we took it back I saw an ad for the eee Pad on newegg, and I thought it looked pretty good.

just a fyi, newegg doesn't allow refunds, so if your going to get one, get it from somewhere that does. I believe amazon allows refunds.

I can compare it to the iPad because my GF has one. Personally I think the Eee Pad is the better product for me, but for most people the iPad might be more suitable for reasons of simplicity. Honeycomb is a great OS and opens up many interesting capabilities for its users in version 3.1 (I connected a USB disk and a USB mouse without any trouble for example), but I think for the average user all the settings available night be confusing.

Anyhow, performance and usability in general are in no way behind that of an iPad 2 if you ask me. The display is even better for browsing the web. And you can use most Android apps for phones - which don't look like crap because they're not upscaled like on the iPad. But you can consider yourself an early adopter if you buy a Honeycomb tablet now, which is now the case if you buy an iPad.

are you using a BT controller for you n64oid? also, n64oid isn't on the android market anymore, where did you pick yours up from?

Not using the BT wiimote yet, but plan too. I had to scour a couple place on google to find it, but eventually it was there -- looks like it was taken down in the past couple days. Word has it the dev got fed up with people trashing his app about lack of game support (seriously...?)

I just tried Castlevania and, unfortunately, it won't launch. Here's a list of what works so far (pretty good list imo):

Daaamn, now this impresses me.

HTC Thunderbolt on 4G, wifi tethered to my Asus Transformer, using the splashtop remote app to control my desktop pc.

I'm going to have to install the app on my gf's laptop so I can screw with her while I'm at work lol.

Hehe thats actually quite amazing.

Another not that I've notice became a problem around 3.1 time was the touch screen stopped working. Happened to my wifes as well. Simple solution is to let the battery drain so it will actually perform a hard shut down, when it comes back up everything should work fine and the update applied like a champ after that.

I agree with the simplicity of the iPad, if they don't have any type of technical knowledge or just don't want to learn any I recommend the iPad. How ever I'm having a blast with the transformer.

does everyone have that problem with the unresponsive screen? how often does it happen? I couldn't keep something that did that more than once a week.

If anyone wants my keyboard dock, I'll let it go for the price I paid. $150 shipped. I'm shifting around my hobby toy money...going to get into bitcoin for fun

Let me know.

It only happened during the major update. I think she got ancy when it started applying the patch and tried to restart to see if it worked. Its only happened a few times that I've read about. Has yet to happen to me. Its scary similar to how the first iPod was, anyone remember having to wait till those ran out of batter after constant freezes?

Just to re-iterate, its not a common problem was probably a PEBCAK where people got tired of waiting.

Has there been any update as for when this is going to get Netflix on it? I really want to buy one for my fiancee, but no netflix is a no go for her. I'm tempted to just buy her a 16gb version for the meantime and hope netflix comes out on it soon. I really don't want to buy her an ipad2. ;(

Poorly taken pic I took a while ago before returning my Transformer cause the screen was unresponsive. Probably a fluke issue, however, I wasn't gonna wait around since I already got a CR48 in the meantime.

Clicky for useless hi res version. I'm sorry, my mind must of blanked while taking this pic. No setup, no proper lighting, etc. On another note, both backlights are at their respective max. IPS vs IPS. Yay!!

How is the nook in terms of responsiveness for web browsing compared to the eee transformer? I it's half the cost, just wondering if it's a huge difference like going from barely useable to smooth/responsive.

They are both okay. I returned the Transformer before the 3.1 update, so I cannot really make a judgement - WAY to many issues with the 3.0 it came with (the most annoying being fullscreen youtube, and only youtube, stuttering).

Dear fellow EUropeans,
where to get the Transformer for the lowest price? Also, are there any "coupons"?

BTW, should I get it from the Canadian Amazon (relatives do come handy :)), do Canadians have to pay additional taxes (on top of the CDN$599.99)?

Also, for foreign travellers to USA/Canada that bought electronics there: how do you get through the toll border (on your way back home to, say, EU), without paying the EU taxes?

PS: Why above questions? The Transformer with keyboard from Canada costs €430, the Transformer without keyboard from Germany costs €500! :(

Anyone know where I can pick up a keyboard dock? Everywhere I look, the Transformer is in stock but not the dock :(

I'd like to hear some user experiences with the 3.1 updated version of android on the transformer.
I've heard mixed things about some people having issues with video playback issues on this device.

I bought one and the first thing it did was the OTA update to 3.1

I have found playback of HTML embedded and discrete app youtube/flash to be excellent. The device is susceptible to flaky wireless connections (like any other device) and a few places I go have problems due to low/intermittent bandwidth.

I really, really like the transformer, overall. Polaris office doesn't do animations in presentations (power point) but that's about my only real gripe. I've had the "sleep of death" happen once or twice but it hasn't been a big issue yet, either.

Mine rocks. I convert all my mobile stuff to MP4, or download the MP4 versions of Music Videos from You Tube and it plays them just fine. (I use 720, not 1080, becawuse of space limitations. I only have 96GB of storage)

I have ripped about 100 DVDs to MP4 format and it plays them fine.

If it's in a format that I do not feel like converting, I'll Remote Desktop to my PC and run Windows Media Center and watch it through that. Works like a champ.

With the stock OS, absolutely horrible. But get a GB or Honeycomb rom on there and it should be fine.

only way to run honeycomb is from the sd card right? from what I've read and videos I've watched, its very laggy.

what I understand. nook won't get a good smooth running honeycomb till google releases the source code. google said they would release the source code once honeycomb is ready for smartphones. I assume that will happen with the release of ice cream sandwich, which is in a couple months?

these were announced today: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/archos-intros-80-gb-and-101-g9-android-3-1-tablets-1-5ghz-cpu/

getting closer to that nook price. who knows how they will perform with those hard drives, what battery will be like, and the screens are...

they look awesome, but I would be worried about how the screen will look compared to my nook..

Thanks for the answers accidentalsucess and notarat. That's re-assuring. I saw some videos on youtube of people having very choppy playback with some video files and some dropping sound completely.
I think they were trying to play WMV files and also a 720p youtube video.
I don't care about wmv since I never use that format. As long as it can play other stuff with no major problems.

Very seriously thinking about getting one. Its the best looking tablet so far IMHO. I'm not a fan of the rounded look of ipad, galaxy tab, etc.

Some videos don't play smoothly on the tegra 2 tablets if they aren't transcoded properly. Don't let people blow smoke up your butt on that notion [you saw otherwise]. The good news is you can transcode properly and they will play just fine. I have lots of rips for my iPad 2 that are choppy as hell on my Iconia [running 3.0.1]. Those trancodes came from Handbrake and were done specially for iPad. I found some new settings that work great on Android and now rips done with those settings play fine too. And the good news is that they play fine on the iPad 2 as well. I've ripped at 1920 x 1080 p too and they play fine. It's all in the settings.

One beef that I have with the dock is the full size SD card keeps getting ejected when I put it in my laptop bag. I may have to file the SD card down a bit.

The SDXC?

Standard size SD/SDHC/SDwhatever will stick out of the dock a little and can pop out in a bag. A microSD card inserted into the tablet itself is flush/very slightly recessed (in relation to the edge of the tablet) so this doesn't happen.

Well I ended up buying the transformer today.
Unfortunately the 3.1 update is not yet released here in Japan. (today was the first day the tablet was actually released here). I'm hoping it comes out soon.

So far, I really like the form factor of the transformer. And in a lot of ways it is a delight to use. It definitely does feel like it has a way to go before it is mature yet though.
There are a lot of little bugs/annoyances still present, both with the OS itself and the tablet/dock integration. Once these get ironed out I think it will be an awesome platform.
Android really needs more quality tablet apps though. I was tempted to get an ipad in the shop today purely because of it having so many cool apps. I had to remind myself why I hate apple and walk away :)

Heard the 3.1 update fixed the video playback issues. Anybody mind testing out some videos? I'll give you links.

I can give it a shot when I get home. What were you looking to check? Some he youtube videos still pause once in a while but I never get laggy videos now.
