Newegg Responds to Best Buy

As someone who worked at an electronics store in high school and realizes how little actual training those employees receive, I can feel justified in calling you a complete asshole who has nothing better to do than try to make some stressed-out miserable kid's day even worse.

I have to agree that being a jerk to front-line staff who are trying to be helpful, but may not have the tools or knowledge to do so, is a douchebag move. Further, it is usually those who have so little control over their own lives that the low-level staff at retail stores are the only ones they have the ability to berate.

If the person is rude to you, that is one thing. Otherwise, take your issues to management or corporate. Those people don't get paid enough to even get proper training, much less take a bunch of crap from dickheads.

Whoa! Slow down there turbo, I never said anything about bullying anyone. I in fact said "Then I laugh in my head a little bit...". I almost always have corrected them, or just bought the product I had done my research on after they did their little spill. I'm sure you've laughed in your head a little when people try to explain things to you, or do things for you when you already know infinitely more than they do. I've done the same thing's to family members and friends.

Just because these stores have people working in their electronics sections with little to no training, encouraging them to get in customers faces with "factoids" about items and "recommendations" that they know very little about themselves isn't my problem. It doesn't mean I cannot laugh in my head a little at them. I almost always proceed to correct them where they are wrong. Given, 75% of the time their recommendations are towards the most expensive items there, or what they are trying to get rid of. I cannot count on one set of fingers, or even toes how many times sales person have told me that monster cables are infinitely better than any other cables. These people receive just enough training that they are able to prey on the less inclined to sell the more expensive, or POS items they are trying to get rid of. I'm not in the wrong because these places train their employees to do these things, take it up with them. Ha. :D

As someone who worked at an electronics store in high school and realizes how little actual training those employees receive, I can feel justified in calling you a complete asshole who has nothing better to do than try to make some stressed-out miserable kid's day even worse. Someone at corporate crunched the numbers and figured out what the most profitable amount of training was, and that is all they provided. They figured out that a day or two of online slideshow training was enough to answer a majority of customer questions, and that potential sales profits lost by having employees who are undertrained is less than the amount of money it would cost to give a proper training to all of the employees. I was shocked when I completed the training and realized that as a 16 year old who enjoyed computer games and home audio equipment, I had not learned anything in the training that I didn't already know. And many times, douchebags like you with nothing better to do would come in with no intentions of buying a product just to get some easy bullying of under-trained teenagers who could not do anything to stop you without losing their jobs. I bet that made you feel big.

You should thank people like that, they are doing you a favor. If you think you can get by further on in life by relying on knowledge that you obtain only by your employer? Blame other people for your lack of knowledge? Be pro-active and train yourself and do your own research outside of work so you can perform better in your field.

You're right, that is what they are trained to do. It sucks, but that's what the company's business model is. It always irks me to see hate directed at the guys on the sales floor, as if all of the things wrong with the retail electronics business are directly their fault. It's not. Sure, some may be particularly rude or lazy, in which case getting mad at them is justified, but if they are genuinely trying to be friendly and answer questions on subjects that they haven't been properly trained in, there is no reason to belittle them.

I never said anything about hate either. You're trying to make me Dr. Evil over here or something. Laughing at someone in your head and correcting them are much different things than just blurting out snotty remarks and calling them dumb. Also, it isn't wrong to hold them to a higher level than Joe Blow just walking through the store. If a company is going to have people selling products, they had damned well at least have a 5th graders education on the products, or not try to act smart about them and approach you about it. Also, teaching them correct info about products instead of what they've been told to tell you isn't belittling them, it's called doing them a favor.

To all the above banter if these employees that work there cared they would educate themselves about the product there selling then they would be much better at their job instead of just collecting a paycheck. I worked retail for BB and fry's and TigerDirect the difference being i card about the product i worked with and kept myself educated on the product that we carried so i didn’t sound like an idiot. But was always HARDcore about electronics of any kind. If they don't want to be made fun of they should care about what they are doing and or selling a little bit more.

"Hey guys, remember when Best Buy used to be cool?" - " Best Buy? You mean Worst Buy?" - "Yeah, me neither."

There was actually a time for me when Bestbuy was a pretty cool store.
This was back around the time I first got a 1ghz pc, so early 2000's I think. The dvd rom drive broke and when I brought it in to Bestbuy, they replaced it on the spot with a brand new dvd drive off the shelf. It took about 10-15 minutes to get everything taken care of and then I left with a working dvd drive, replaced and installed at no charge. I was under warrenty. Bestbuy had way better service for this kind of thing before geek squad

I remember it was kinda fun back then. i was a tech there back before they started this geeksquad crap and made the tech business look like a bunch of idiots.

Best buy should have made their own youtube video.

guy goes to oldchicken.com or something along those lines looks at a bunch of reviews, which are really not helpful to him (1 star DIDNT WORK!!!1, things like that), picks the wrong part, then tries to return it but has to pay a restocking fee and deal with shipping.

instead they just seem like a busted old company.

well played newegg

Neweggs response in a nut shell "go pound sand"

I love it,maybe this might cause Best Buy to actually review its policy's and make them selves better(yah right)

Perhaps that commercial by itself wouldn't have caused Best Buy to send a C&D letter but when combined with BB's problem with the Newegg's "Geek On" logo, BB felt Newegg was targeting them

You're allowed to trash talk competitors. Newegg can "target" Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, whoever they want. If you have AT&T and Comcast in the same area, the latter has savagely brutal slams of the former in its ads.

What they're not allowed to do is use the competitor's trademark, which is what Best Buy is C&D'ing over. So this is about 3 things: blue shirts, the word "geek" and the power icon. The first is generic, as stated by others, there are other retailers with blue-shirted employees. The second could be trademarked, but Best Buy TM'ed "Geek Squad" not the world "geek" by itself. So that's N/A. The power icon is actually an internationally standardized symbol (IEC 5009) and can't be trademarked by anyone.

Best Buy doesn't have much to stand on. They have enough lawyers to probably know that. However, it never hurts to have the legal secretary write up a C&D and have a law partner sign it. The might have gotten lucky. They didn't, but they could have.

The experts on Newegg are the portion of their customers that post useful reviews, not their employees. The other 2/3 of the reviews are either clueless customers or manufacturers apologizing.

Sometimes Newegg will have better prices, sometimes they don't, but returning anything is a pain, often including expensive shipping and restocking fees. So I've just lived with issues instead of going through all the hassle, like when the DVI input on my 22" Acer display died (VGA still works and now it's my fiance's second monitor).

Newegg like Best Buy is a company, and both have their strengths. Not every Best Buy store will be the same and I'm sure there are some that are not run correctly, but I would put my tech skills up against anyone at Newegg.

Hmmm did BEST BUY send a letter to NBC over the TV SHOW "CHUCK".. Chuck dressed like a Geek Squad member(sorry he works for the NERD HERD) in the BUY MORE store.... Which is a complete comedic slap directly at BB...

The real winner in all this are the damn attorneys. I am sure they told BB execs that the C&D was a good idea.

I get this commercial up to the point where they talk about expert reviews. Buying and then reviewing a product doesn't make you an expert. If it does, then Bestbuy.com has expert reviews too.
