Citigroup has just released a statement saying hackers have accessed 200,000 accounts. According to the bank, only personal information was stolen, no credit card details were lost.

The hackers were able to gain access to Citi's Account Online service to view customer names, their account numbers and contact information including email addresses. They weren't able to gain access to social security numbers, birth dates, card expiry dates or card security codes.

This crap is why I've never totally trusted Banks or CC companies.

Bullshit.

How do you only access "personal information" but not CC information?

Oh yeah, I'll buy that bridge now.

because it's probably a different database? user account database vs card database (which is probably internal only)

what i find really great is hearing about it here first, instead of from my bank

LOL??

Account #'s were retrieved. I be they were able to get enough information to have cards sent directly to anyone they wanted to.

So...given how 2011 is going thus far, I feel the following response is appropriate.

Close all accounts, banks credit cards, internet etc.
Sell all worldly possessions of an electronic nature.
Buy cabin in mountains
Buy enough ammunition to provide food and scare away boys with purty mouths.
Grow beard
Throw away the little womans shoes. She don't need shoes in the kitchen.

:(

Guess I can't come to visit anymore, I thought we had something special. =(

Sigh. It's getting to the point where its not "if" your personal information/identity will be stolen, but "when."

Seriously? Banks can't even protect their sh*t?

Getting myself a new card anyway. Not worth taking the chance.

Only personal information. Well, what the hell. No worries then, right?

My sears card is with them :(

Actually, credit card numbers WERE stolen:

The hackers were able to gain access to Citi's Account Online service to view customer names, their account numbers and contact information including email addresses.

They weren't able to gain access to social security numbers, birth dates, card expiry dates or card security codes.

The worst part? Companies all over will now be using that stupid Judge Decision to let that bank off for 500k in stolen money (see later story in news) as a precedent to get out of any responsibility.

That Judge has done far more damage than he realizes with that poor decision.

Account numbers =/= credit card numbers

It is true that account numbers were actually stolen, and it's only a matter of time to brute force the 3-digit security codes on the back of the card. That's about 1000 possible combinations right there.

You may want to re-read the quote you made above, Steve.

The expiration dates wouldn't that be hard either to figure out given that most cards only have a lifetime of 3 to 5 years roughly.

This is bad. Really bad.

I wonder how hard hit Citigroup will be when all 200,000 account holders closed their accounts and up and left to never return?

And, how many were business credit cards and left to go to another company?

I hope Citigroup won't ask for a bailout for loss of income and just go under. I wouldn't want tax dollars of mine go to save their ass.

Don't worry, I will still allow those who have purty mouths but know how to do dirty things with it.

We don't want any trouble. Heck, we'll even buy some of your moonshine.

Those tendering trades of value shall be allowed to do so.

Do you prefer Corn or grain shine? :D

When does the blame game start. I for one say it wasn't the LutzSec because."They weren't able to gain access to social security numbers, birth dates, card expiry dates or card security codes." Must have been script kiddies.:D

This crap is why I've never totally trusted Banks or CC companies.

 because banks love it when this happens, right?

I don't know about other banks but I use Chase and if a hacker managed to get usernames and passwords (not as much use as CC numbers, but still), he wouldn't be able to log in to accounts because with Chase, when you try to log in on a new PC you have to confirm the PC with a special one time code that is sent to your email address or cell, and neither of these addresses are shown on-screen

In my opinion this is being done by people more than just average hackers. The big hacks are coming from some sort of organized crime ring. Eventually the powers that be are going to put a stop to this. Should be interesting to watch.

Whew, just my personal information was stolen. Man, that makes me feel so much better. :(

Nice, I've had my MC and my visa Debit hacked, and I have no idea how. Only use on "trust worthy" site that have never said they lost CC data. luck the law is on the consumer side, and you are not liable.

I've been meaning to cancel my CC with Citi for a while now, this just gave me more reason to do it. When I called them they were also able to check if I was affected (no, but not sure how believable that is). So go ahead and give them a call, it might put you at rest.

Thread title says credit card data was accessed, original post says no credit card data lost?

?_?

Totally irrelevant in this case. The bank was hacked and is clearly liable. The case you site the customer was liable because the customer failed to secure their systems.

So I'm assuming that if my information was compromised I will be notified?
