As the topic heading says.

I'm trying to find a reasonably priced server MB with IPMI that takes one of the new (cheap) core i7 CPU's using socket 1155, that has the new AES instruction set.

I've found the SuperMicro X9SCA-F ... but it says it only supports up to i3, and I don't understand why. Does anyone know for sure if its possible to use an i7 with it?

Or any other ideas? I'd prefer to stick to SuperMicro, but I don't think there are any...

It seems an E3-1270 (which in terms of core specs seems to be equivalent to an i7-2600) is only $40 more.

Also it seems (from looking at supermicro block diagrams) that the xeons have an extra PCIe port. So presumablly even if you could use an i7 on a server board one of your expansion slots wouldn't work.

Hmm.. maybe you're right.

I'll go for the E3-1230 I think, since it has hyperthreading and appears to be blazing fast.
