Going Hi-Tech To Catch Loud Cars

I had the pleasure of hearing the new BOSS mustang's custom exhaust, and while idle I have to say impressive the thing didn't get too loud at full throttle, loud but not as loud as I expected.

I wonder how this ordenance will effect the new muscle cars coming out.
Despite what car "enthusiasts" think exhausts are tuned for sound which isn't necessary to make more horsepower...it's simply something that car guys want. Obviously there's a point where that stops becoming true or at least the effects are too minimal to make a difference. Some of the most efficient exhausts for street cars are among the quietest. If noise restrictions are put in place for new cars companies like Ford will simply quiet the cars down and in the end they'll be just as fast.

My father has a completely stock Maserati Granturismo S with a McSportline exhaust (direct from the factory) and no matter how fast you are driving you can hear it for several blocks. A law like this would literally make his car unusable.

Worst analogy/quote ever. How is not liking something the same as damaging someones possession because you're too much of a gutless wonder to do something about it like a real man?

You seem like the kind of person that would key another car.

What would a real man do?

GOOD!!!

Ive gotten pulled over twice for a loud muffler, meanwhile motorcycles and trucks are blasting by, making a racket and they don't catch any shit at all. If my car has to be quiet then everything on the road should have to be as well, no exceptions.

a problem is when stock exhausts trip the system like a Harley motorcycle or a tubby system on a ferrari...ohh boy

For some of the people saying "It's acceptable for a V8 (or bigger engine) but not for a little 4 cyl import)" then they need to think things through.

In my situation (2008 sentra spec v) I wanted some extra power and better fuel economy so I replaced my exhaust.

I wanted something that was deep but as close to stock (in terms of how loud it gets) as possible. It was either my deep sounding Greddy or several other exhaust that sound like the stereotypical riced out civic.

It's a good bit louder then stock but it's not too noisy. If you're going at low speeds you can kinda manipulate it to not be so noisy (or minimize it) so I try to do that as much as possible when driving through a development.

I'm well aware there are probably a decent number of car enthusiasts on here. I've yet to see any solid posts from any though.

I think it would be more accurate to say you don't recognize any opinion other than your own, and you already made it clear that your own interests are more important than the greater good. Some good points have been made but you are determined to make this all about you. So, if you want to volunteer to pay for potholes to be filled, road construction, etc while championing the right to a loud exhaust, I salute you...

with one finger =)

The only time I can see this being used with my blessing is when I have neighbors driving through our neighborhood between 10pm-5am with speakers blaring, subwoofers thumping, and tires screeching.

However, the part of me that absolutely hates the police state we are turning into (already are?) says NO WAY! I would vote against it!

I admit, I don't like loud cars, but this idea to ticket them is a load of bull.

Good luck proving it for anybody that fights it. All the device provides is circumstantial evidence. They cannot prove somebody might not be off camera providing the source of the noise.

You are kidding right? There can't be anybody *that* ignorant.

Let's see, they have a picture with your license plate... they couldn't possibly trace that now could they? And of course they could never inspect your car/motorcycle since they couldn't possibly get your address and name by just putting your license plate info into a computer.

Sure, you can modify your exhaust before the inspection, but hey, that solves the problem and quiets down your noisy sh*tbox, doesn't it?

Well see thats the entire point of the BOSS and in my opinion the GT 5.0 as well. Both cars have custom exhaust not to be really loud but to mimic the typical american muscle engine, the BOSS was specifically made to mimic the 60's muscle purr. If this law is enforced it would suck to pay that much more for pretty much a GT 5.0 with really nice trim.

I can see this law being enforced on the dicks. Here in AZ its really hard to get a ticket, everytime I see someone get pulled over its either your extreme lead foot or the guy whos cutting in an out of traffic. I can see this being enforced on those who are very annoying with it or doing it only to be stupid.

As long as they just put these in residential areas where the public agrees that noise output is important.

I have a plethora of Harley's cruising by that have virtually no mufflers installed and shake the china in my cabinet and a old model blue Camaro SS with glasspacks that constantly does burnouts and drag racing runs down my 30mph road just because its long and straight... but uhm, hello there are still houses on both sides!!!

I video taped the guy today doing a burnout directly in front of my house today, but the 720P footage wasn't good enough to get a clear plate so I'm SOL again. Same guy that peels out at midnight on friday nights as well.

"WHISTLE TIPS WHOOO WHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

yeah. fuck those guys. :D

And btw, I have a 460hp modified C5 Corvette and two motorcycles as well, but I short shift the bike and don't let the Vette get above 2K rpm while I'm in residential areas, and do starts from third gear to keep the noise down.

I have nothing against somewhat loud vehicles, but just make sure it doesn't shake your fillings, and don't rev the engine and race where people want to relax at home or in front of restaurants or around cemeteries and the like. Just have some decency.

If it happens at a typical time every day or close to it, you can get a few more neighbors to call in with the same time the police should set up near by to watch that spot. Thats how we got the guy who liked to peel out of their drive way at 430am here. After a week of complaints i guess a cop was waiting for him, as I was leaving at 5 he was still getting his ticket. The guy honestly thought 2 weeks later he was in the clear did it again and I got to see him get his second ticket, less then a month later I realized his car wasn't in his garage.

If those Mustangs are sold in California they have to pass before being sold. I've seen some bad ass cars fall well below CA's weighted dB-A's.

It is hard to get a ticket here in AZ. I swear DPS doesn't pull people over for speeding anymore.

You make a good point about CA, I guess this law has no real bearing on factory stock cars, unlike some of the fears of the few posters in this thread.

Its kind of funny, picking someone up from PI I was running a few minutes late and hit traffic, going 80 I cut a guy off going faster then me in the carpool lane on accident. I was thinking to myself "boy this would be hilarious if that was a cop." It was a cop, he didn't care probably because I got the hell out of his way as fast as I could.

Like someone else said, it's all about time & place.

My brother likes to play guitar in his garage. Sometimes he likes to turn the amp up a bit. After 9pm though he has to shut it off due to city ordinance or else he risks getting a ticket.

Another example is my work. Their store has houses located directly behind it. If they don't have the dock doors closed by 10pm and are screwing around with lifts and pallets on the dock, the people living in the houses *will* call the police and the store *will* be ticketed.

Same applies to this case. Feel free to make your car/motorcycle as loud as you want but don't come back from a bar on a Tuesday at 3am on your Harley with an exhaust that rattles windows and sets off car alarms because I *will* make sure you to talk to the police before you go to bed.

Turning into a police state practically. Just more cameras and cops always. They are always trying to find a way to just drain everyones wallets. If everyone just didn't drive for a couple days i bet all these cops would lose their jobs. Quotas would not be met. When the cops are out on the streets, they are there to get you. When they are not, they are there to help you ;)

Is that like saying your car is super fast because it has a type-r sticker? (granted solid mounts are nicer then stickers)

Man I just got one of those Type-R stickers overnight from Japan. I put it on my 1985 Integra (did I say Integra, I meant ITR), and you're right, it doesn't make the car faster, BUT let me tell you man. I'm stopped at a light, some guy pulls up next to me and starts revving his engine, but then he sees the Type-R sticker and HE KNOWS he can't win. Up against Lambos, Ferraris, AMGs, Z06s, you name it, they all know not to race me. Next I need to overnight a bodykit or something so people know that I'm FO REAL.

Personal responsibility tends to get thrown out the window when the police are involved. People would rather blame cops then accept responsibility for their actions. They aren't out to get you, trust me, you're not important enough.

lol i've seen cops just follow me and other people like a predator. They want to find that one reason so they can pull you over and give u a ticket. Seen one cop today just waiting on the side of the road waiting for someone behind a tree all hidden. These cops have better things to do than to just screw people over with bills they can't afford to pay these days. They should be fighting real crime.

this thread is just to funny.

but seriously some of you are whining because of a loud car or bike. Do you not have big rigs around your area? or dump trucks? or trash trucks? heck street sweepers? Gonna complain about those to? What about a lawn mower? weed wacker surely you have some grandpa who does his yard work at 6:30am.

My car is not loud, it used to be. I could easliy set off car alarms in a parking garage with a small rev. I never had one complaint from a neighbor. I received a few tickets for my "aftermarket exhaust" all were beat in court due to the officer not have a DB reading.

Besides the point i know of MANY FACTORY cars which will exceed 80db.

Yes i understand some of your points by some douche reving his car on purpose at 2am coming in the gates, thats just uncalled for. Late at night when I am driving through residental areas I try and keep my car quiet as possible.

Now if i start getting tickets for exceeding 80db, I will make it a point to ticket anyone who operates a lawn mower, weed wacker, dump truck, trash truck, because well guess what they could have bigger mufflers to be quieter to. We all have different nerves and all are tweaked in different ways but seriously? people are going to start complaining about loud cars now to? I'm taking your man card away!

What the fuck are you dribbling about? The greater good? So car enthusiasts don't have the right to do what they enjoy? I've said numerous times I don't condone rdiicilously loud exhausts ripping through residential, but the fact of the matter is exhausts on performance cars WILL be illegal with the low dB level they set.

So now who's being ignorant? The automotive scene isn't exactly me and my 3 friends. It is a huge community. But as long as you don't EVER have to listen to a sound you don't like it is ok to ticket all these people (or the majority).

Potholes? Road construction? What are you babbling about? You realize most of these systems are run by private companies (like photo radar is) and the majority of the profits go no where near road maintenance.

If your going to spew BS at least have a clue what you are talking about.

What would a real man do?

Approach the owner like and adult. Go through legal measures. Not act like a little 12 year old girl and key a car.

I can tell you a stock 2009 f150 exceeds 80db at 30 feet with the factory everything.

If a cop is following you and wants to give you a ticket then don't do anything illegal, it's as simple as that. For all you know he's following you because a car that matched your description was flagged for a crime and he was running your plates. This is what I'm talking about...you assume the cop is following people just to be a dick and catch them rather than assuming that he's going that way, following up on a legitimate concern with someone that matches that description, etc, etc.

As far as fighting real crime....when "real crime" isn't happening what do you expect the cops to do......sit around and play Angry Birds? Drive around aimlessly hoping to stumble on the one crime a year that happens in their assigned area? A very large percentage of arrests happens during routine traffic stops so he's doing a hell of a lot more to prevent crime sitting on the side of the road than you think.

No, it doesn't. the mounts have no bearing on what speed your car idles at.
Solid mounts will transmit much more vibration to the chassis/body/interior. It can be pretty freaking harsh. Raising the engine speed smooths it out by increasing the rate of power pulses and it tends to be harmonically smoother too.

I hate loud exhausts. I also have a modified turbo MR2, which can be kind of loud. But I have a custom exhaust and weld in nice mufflers with a cat, and a resonator to keep it quiet. You can have the "performance" and keep it quiet. There's no reason to be loud about it.

But a lot of other car guys don't get it when I say I don't like how loud their car is. Like wanting a reasonably quiet car just does not compute. Same for loud music. How is the music better by being louder?

Someone with half a brain.. Bout time.

While the exaust noise is the issue here, it isn't the bigger picture I'm trying to get across.. I said it earlier, where did everyone get this sense of self worth that they don't have to put up with anything they don't like? If I don't like it we can make it illegal or ticket the "offense".

No. Man up. Deal with it. Lots of things I don't like. I don't particularly like my neighbour mowing their lawn at 8am on a Saturday. You know what I do about it? Nothing. You know what he does when I'm working on my car at 6pm on a Saturday? Nothing. Mutal agreement and compromise.

It's all these whiny self righteous wankers that think society owes them something if they are inconvienced.

It's clear that you're not as knowledgeable about cars as you're letting on, don't get mad because someone finally called you on it.

How so? If your going to call me out prove it? I'm not the one laughing at upping the idle to deal with solid motor mounts, which any idiot in the car scene would understand. Yet I'm the one with lacking knowledge? Call me out.
