I was digging around in our case mod forums looking for ways to get my triple 23" Samsung monitors up off my desk when all of the sudden I ran across this guy's homemade monitor stand.

This thing costs a fraction of what a store bought stand would and it looks a hell of a lot sturdier! A hat tip to [H] forum member "profanum" for letting me share his project.

I would like to see it painted to help it blend in a bit more, but that is some nice improvising there. Another idea is those pipes look big enough where you could route cables inside. Maybe not dvi but definitely some power cords. Anyway just a thought looks good.

the stand on my 27 inch monitor sucks balls, I am going to do something like that so I have some room on my desk and some options to move and tilt it.

nice job to the dude who made it, and nice find.

Nice work and thanks for sharing! I've been in the market for one of these since last year but something else has always taken priority. I need to look into this.

HDMI/mini-HDMI or Displayport would sure fit.

I'm thinking he could use a Dremel and a cutting disc and cut a lengthwise slit in the pipe to stuff any cables in. The pipes should be sturdy enough to handle that, especially if you wrap it with that bracket the second picture shows.

As for the ghetto mod, it's quite clever but I would need something made so that I could swivel my monitors from landscape to portrait mode.

You're only allowed to build this stand if: a) you're in the plumber's union & b) you can show some ass crack over the top of your pants when you bend over !!! Then home depot will sell you the parts ;)

Good work! Nice to see that kind of stand taking off. Hopefully it helps bring the crazy high prices of retail options down. I'm a big fan of the DIY option. ;)

I'm seriously thinking about doing this myself now. How difficult would it be to make a stand that would swivel too?

I'm about ninety percent certain that chair is from Staples.

Office Depot :)

And yea, I plan on finishing up the base. I wasn't sure when I initially built it if that was the route I wanted to go, but now that I've been running it for a while I just need to become un-lazy and paint it.

As for rotating the monitors to portrait, I could see doing it like DrFish, with a single pipe clamp and using that as your rotation point? I only did two because I cut my VESA plates for another stand originally and I needed both the 100x100 and 75x75 points so I recycled the 100x100 points for my mounting instead of drilling new holes. Although even if they are able to rotate to portrait, that still doesn't take into account how far in you have to move the two sides and I'm not sure if the back straight is short enough to allow that without a large gap...

I did use one pipe clamp initially because I liked the idea of rotating it - however it's not super robust - two is probably better 99% of the time. FWIW I've never rotated mine, in fact I had to add some epoxy to the pipe clamp to keep it from spinning on the pipe whenever the cat bumped it, so again, two is probably always better.

...wait a minute....

Look at that floor, no trash can, no dirt, no posters on the wall, no odd personal clutter. Either he just moved in and it's the first thing he set up or....IT'S A TRAP!!

That was me who mentioned portrait mode. I don't mean to sound like I'm pissing on your invention. It does look really cool and creative and I'm sure something could be worked out to make it swivel-able and after swiveling to portrait, sliding the monitors together (as there'll be gaps between them). I'll have to think that one out a bit.

Ah, nah, I didn't read it like that :) I was just thinking out how to do portrait. Besides, not my invention :) It's a pretty straight forward thing, plenty of other ones have been made, like DrFish's.

Haha, I've been in there for about 2 1/2 years now. I try to keep it fairly clutter free (or at least where I do work) I have some posters that I've meant to hang up for the past 2 years, but I've never gotten around to it so they sit leaning against the other walls.

All I have to say is damn, those are some big nipples... :D

Not bad, but what's so bad about having the 3 monitor stands? The stands these days are pretty small and have a simple V that you can still put something, like a small speaker, directly under the monitor.

I would think that there is some sort of hardware... like a pivot bolt, or something along those lines that you could use to pivot the monitors... I'm getting ideas... about to go to Home Depot and wonder around to get ideas...

I just noticed that this guy has a func surface 1030. super hard to find these days though. imo best mousepad ever (though ive never used a ratpadz)
